Beans are good in all respects, they are healthy, filling, inexpensive and very tasty. But it also has one drawback: a very long cooking time. Dry beans must be sorted by hand, soaked for at least 8 hours, and then cooked for another 1-1.5 hours.

To save time and enjoy healthy dishes using these wonderful beans, you can prepare canned beans. It preserves three-quarters of all vitamins and minerals, and you don’t have to wait long, just choose a quality product, open the jar and enjoy the taste of your favorite dishes.

Types of Canned Beans

Most often, stores sell red, white or green beans in tin or glass containers. The white one is softer and more delicate in taste, while the red one is dense and retains its shape better. Green beans can be preserved as whole pods or cut into small pieces.

How to choose a quality product?

  1. First of all, you need to pay attention to the composition. Apart from the beans themselves, water, sugar and salt, there should be no other ingredients. The presence of nitrates, flavorings and flavor enhancers indicates that such a product is not beneficial; it may be lower in price and have a longer shelf life, but it is not recommended to purchase it. The only preservative that may be present in small quantities is acetic acid. There may also be tomato paste in a can of red or white beans.
  2. Next, you need to carefully inspect the container. Although tin cans are stronger and more durable, it is better to choose glass containers in which you can easily see all the contents. High-quality beans have approximately the same size, smooth, undamaged surface. For canning green beans, choose strong young green pods without damage or bulges, no more than 9 centimeters long. The container itself should not be damaged, rusted or blistered.
  3. And of course, look at the expiration date. If it comes to an end, it is better to refuse the purchase; the less time has passed since the production date, the healthier and tastier the beans will be.

Storage:

  • Depending on the variety and method of preparation, canned beans can be stored for 6 months to 1 year. Manufacturers are required to indicate the date of manufacture and expiration date on the container. An expired product must not be eaten in any form.
  • If tomato paste is present in the composition, the shelf life is reduced due to the fermentation products it contains.
  • Canned food should be stored in dark, cool places, avoiding direct sunlight.
  • A bulging can or lid may indicate that canned food has gone bad. You need to get rid of this product.

What and how to cook from canned beans

Canned beans have a mild, mild taste and delicate texture. It is combined with products of both plant and animal origin. Therefore, it is used as a side dish for main dishes, added to salads and soups, and prepared as snacks and fillings for baked goods. Beans make very tasty and thick sauces and purees.

To prepare all these dishes, just open the jar, throw the contents into a colander, rinse and let the liquid drain. This will help get rid of excess salt and acid in the composition.

Let's look at the most popular canned bean dishes.

Garnish

Canned beans are a ready-to-eat side dish, especially if it contains tomato paste. It is enough to add some spices, herbs, oil to it and you can serve it with any meat or fish dish. This also applies to green beans.

Another great side dish is to simmer beans with other vegetables in a frying pan or in a slow cooker. An airy puree is prepared from white and red beans.

Fillings

White beans have the most delicate consistency, which is why they are most often used to prepare fillings for pies, pancakes, cabbage rolls and pies. Fried onions, carrots, garlic, mushrooms, sweet peppers and other vegetables, as well as meat and fish, are added to such fillings. Adjust to taste by adding spices and grind with a blender or puree masher.

Pates

Bean pates are very common as a snack. They are easy to prepare: mix canned white or red beans with garlic, cheese, onions, mushrooms and cottage cheese in a blender.

Be sure to add a liquid component, such as sour cream, olive oil or cream with a little lemon juice and wine vinegar. This pate is spread on bread, toast, served in tartlets or shortcrust pastry baskets.

Soups

Soup with canned beans is cooked in meat, fish, mushroom or vegetable broth. For regular soups, all types of beans are used, including green beans, and for puree soups only white beans.

Onions, celery, carrots, sweet peppers, potatoes and tomatoes are added to soups, both pre-fried and raw. For a richer taste, bay leaves, pepper, salt, and sometimes tomato paste are used. Fried garlic and fresh herbs will give bean soup a special aroma.

Casseroles

It is very simple and quick to prepare a casserole with the addition of canned beans. Vegetables, mushrooms, meat or fish are cut into small pieces, mixed with beans, poured with cream, eggs or sour cream and sent to the oven. You can sprinkle with grated cheese. A very satisfying dish for the whole family.

Salads

Since beans go well with a wide variety of foods, they are often used in salads. Typically, green and red beans are chosen for this dish, which also serve as a decoration due to their rich color.

Beans are added to vinaigrettes, meat, fish and vegetable salads. Vegetables can be used both fresh and canned, and meat can be boiled, smoked, baked or fried. Beans also go well with cheese, mushrooms, liver and olives.

Vegetable oil, mayonnaise or sour cream is used as a dressing for salads with canned beans.

Main meat dishes

Beans are stewed or baked with chicken, beef, pork or fish, most often with the addition of other vegetables. This dish is baked in pots or envelopes in the oven, and stewed on the stove in the form of a stew. Red beans are ideal for main courses.

Dessert

Canned white beans are used to make cookies and puddings. Butter, eggs, sugar are added to the cookie dough, and the beans are ground through a sieve. If the cookies are not sweet, they are prepared with salt, cheese, cumin, paprika and other seasonings.

To prepare puddings, beans are mixed with sugar, egg yolks and cream, everything is ground in a blender, flour and whipped whites are added.

There is nothing difficult in preparing dishes from canned beans; the main thing is to choose high-quality beans, store them correctly and combine them with the right products. And remember some tricks:

  1. An already opened can of beans should be stored in the refrigerator for no longer than 24 hours.
  2. After opening the tin, it is better to transfer the beans into a glass container.
  3. Canned bean soups don't need much seasoning. Enough salt, pepper, bay leaf and ground coriander.
  4. Canned beans can be prepared at home. Boil dry beans in water with sugar, salt, cloves, pepper and vinegar for about 90 minutes. Screw into jars.

Well, now - the recipes. And I'll start, perhaps, with soup.

Of course, these are not all the dishes that can be prepared with canned beans, and each housewife will probably come up with something of her own. And I hope that this collection of recipes will help you with this.

Any housewife should be able to prepare bean salad, because it comes in handy when there is nothing to serve and you need to whip up a quick appetizer. It is made from ready-made ingredients, but gourmets can can their own beans at home, choosing their favorite spices. If you use boiled, the dish will have a more delicate taste.

Red bean salad recipes

A simple recipe for red bean salad can be found anywhere, because this dish has many variations. The basis for the dish is beans: canned, in oil or tomato sauce, or boiled are suitable. Some housewives make preparations at home. However, in order for you to get a delicious red bean salad, you need to responsibly choose the remaining ingredients. Chinese cabbage, crab sticks, boiled potatoes, croutons and cucumbers go well with it. The dressing can be mayonnaise, sour cream with spices, olive oil.

If you buy canned food, pay attention to products from a trusted manufacturer. You can use boiled beans: then choose large, meaty, beautiful beans with thick skin. To make the beans more tender and softer, before cooking and heat treatment, they need to be soaked for a couple of hours (preferably overnight) in cold water. This technique will reduce the cooking time and maintain the shape and consistency of the beans; otherwise, they may boil and turn into puree.

It is better to cook without spices, so that later you can season it to taste. After cooking, be sure to rinse the beans with water, removing excess starch, and allow the liquid to drain - it is best to drain them in a colander. Before preparing the snack, wait until the beans have cooled down: if you put them in the dish hot, the beans will stick together and turn the dish into an unappetizing mass.
