The Central Museum of Railway Transport is one of the oldest technical museums in the world. It was founded in 1813 as a "special room" for storing models at the Institute of the Corps of Railway Engineers. Active replenishment of the collection began with the development of railway transport in Western Europe and America. In 1859, a special decree was issued, according to which all institutions engaged in construction in Russia were required to send models and drawings of constructed structures to the institute: transport facilities, bridges, administrative buildings, monuments and cathedrals. In 1862 the museum opened to the public. In 1901-1902, a new building was built for him in the Yusupov Garden. The museum survived the revolution but almost perished from mismanagement in the early 1930s. During the war, his collections were evacuated to Novosibirsk.

Currently, the museum's funds contain more than 60 thousand items: albums, drawings, photographs, books, more than 300 models of locomotives and wagons. 11 halls of halls are full of static and dynamic models and layouts. The division for the preservation of the historical heritage of the Moscow Center for Scientific and Technical Information and Libraries is located in two territories and is represented by historical and technical sections.

The exposition has been open since August 5, 2011. It occupies an area of ​​about 1800 m², located in a building with an adjacent park area of ​​1.5 hectares. The central exhibit is the steam locomotive of the U127 series. Installed in the museum building, the locomotive was built in 1910. The exhibit is unique, the only surviving steam locomotive of this series in Russia and the world with an axial formula 2-3-0.

On January 23, 1924, the steam locomotive U127 carried the funeral train with the body of the deceased Lenin from the Gerasimovskaya platform to the Paveletsky railway station in Moscow. In 1937, after decommissioning, it was decided to keep it as a monument. So he became the first memorial steam locomotive.

In 1999, the steam locomotive U127 received the certificate "Monument of Science and Technology Russian Federation"for number 350.

The exhibits visually represent the past of the capital's highway in documents, unique drawings, according to which the road was built, uniforms of transport workers of different times, working tools, railway awards.

In the showcases you can see exhibits that tell about the present day of the capital's highway. Models of the rail bus RA-2, high-speed train "Sputnik" are presented. The history of the creation of intermodal lines connecting Belorussky, Paveletsky, Kievsky stations with Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo airports, respectively, can be seen in the existing layouts. The development of high-speed traffic is represented by the current model of the Sapsan high-speed train, which connected the cities of St. Petersburg, Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod.

The artistic solution of the exposition is built taking into account modern museum technologies, the emphasis is on the use of interactive solutions, installations, static models and existing layouts. The halls present: an installation of a compartment of the 1st class of Nikolaev times, the office of the head of the station, the development of suburban traffic in time, where each passenger compartment corresponds to the style of its own unique era.

Movie sketches flicker in the windows of the cars, and screens with fragments of archival chronicles are installed in the windows. This helps to focus not only on visual perception, but also involves a thoughtful study of the presented authentic historical documents.

The idea of ​​displaying the exhibits makes it possible to make the tour of the exposition more lively, interesting and accessible for all age groups of visitors. The exhibition hosts scientific and practical conferences, round tables, business meetings.

Information and ordering excursions

We visited this museum on April 21, 2012.
To begin with, my son (3.5 years old) is a fan of trains. In all kinds. Therefore, you understand that we all were looking forward to this event. Let me just say that we really enjoyed it.
So, in order. A trip to this museum can consist of three parts:
1) actually visiting the museum (it is open-air, the ticket costs mere pennies)
2) trips on an old steam locomotive to the Krasny Baltiets station and back with a visit to the old depot
3) and visiting the exhibition complex next to the entrance to the museum at the Rizhsky railway station (there are train models and, according to rumors, a working model of the railway).
All this takes time from about 12.00 to 16.00. We were on Saturday. The first and third events can be visited by paying for it on the spot, and the locomotive trip must be paid in advance either at the office of the Retrotrain company that organizes this (this is an office that has nothing to do with Russian Railways) or at Millennium Bank terminals.
The whole event - ONLY POSITIVE EMISSIONS: cool trains, a good guide, the child was not bored - when he got tired of listening, he climbed the trains. My husband listened with his mouth open and forgetting about his father's duties. The train ride is also very impressive. In general, we are delighted.

By the way, there were almost more children of our age than adults. And the weather did not disappoint - it was not cold and not hot - April - the best time to attend such events. In summer it is unbearable to walk for 2 hours in the heat.

True, my child said that he would still go to the museum, but he would NEVER ride on a steam locomotive, because the locomotive hums very strongly. It's true. He buzzes so that lays his ears, and it is much louder than a regular train. But fun. Still small. Will ask in a couple of years.

What did not like:
1) There were oddities with paying for tickets for the Retro train (700 rubles per adult, 500 rubles per child, children under 7 years old are free). I paid 3 days before the trip at the Millennium Bank terminal - I checked in advance at the office that they still had free places, then I called the office to clarify whether the payment was received (the surname and contact phone number are indicated in the terminal) - they confirmed that everything was received, come. Moreover, they write on the website that a contact phone number is needed in order to call and warn if something is cancelled. Imagine my surprise when, having arrived at the Rizhsky railway station, I received a warning from a nice girl that we were not on the list, and we might not get on the train today. Then we will be offered to come next time. We got on the train, of course. Made the muzzle brick. But there were nerves. It became scary at the thought of how I would explain this. little child, who was waiting for a trip for a week ... I immediately remembered the scoop. In general, I advise you to pay for this trip directly at the Retropass office - or rather it will be. And then a couple of times to check if everything is in order. And then I saw the face of a boy who, together with his mother, did not get on this train. He was 13 years old and he was crying.
2) The exhibition complex opposite was closed for technical reasons - we were not able to see the model of the railway.

We hope that in the near future we will nevertheless reach this exhibition complex and look at the museum again.
It's done! On July 1, 2012, we finally reached the exhibition complex. It is one large room, where a huge working model of the railway is presented and some expositions near the walls of the room (train models, driver's simulator, etc.). The child was delighted - he ran around the model behind the moving trains ... for about forty minutes ... In general, for boys - the very thing.
