Parquet sanding. How do we do

Sanding is the processing of wood floor covering using sandpaper of different grits. This stage of work is carried out immediately after removing the damaged top layer of the parquet floor. Due to the fact that operations are often carried out with the same equipment, many are looking for what the total cost of scraping and grinding in Moscow will be.

The company "Parquet Business" offers a full range of services in the field of repair various kinds parquet. Our specialists perform:

  • scraping;
  • polishing of a floor covering in 3 stages;
  • puttying seams;
  • parquet varnishing is inexpensive and of high quality, usually in three layers;
  • final polishing.

Grinding steps

The grinding process consists in removing the furrows from the floor covering, which were formed as a result of the operation of the tape machine. The cost of polishing varnished parquet is indicated in rubles/m2. The specialists of our company perform such “sanding” in three approaches.

Each subsequent time, abrasive nozzles of finer grit are used. Price per square meter indicated taking into account all stages of work:

  • Processing with P40 corundum abrasive - traces from the impact of the tape machine are removed.
  • Using P60 abrasive - the irregularities that arose in the first stage are smoothed out.
  • Processing with P100 grain. If an inexpensive varnish coating is to be carried out, then such smoothing will be sufficient, but if an oil application is planned, then additional P120 must be used.

Prices per square meter for polishing parquet with the subsequent use of oil will be slightly higher, as additional work is expected, and a slight increase is also possible in the case of repairing exotic wood parquet.

Equipment

Masters of the company "Parquet business" use equipment in their work - LAGLER, HUMMEL and FLIP. Basically, the same machines are used for grinding as when removing the upper “waste” layer. parquet board, only with finer abrasive. How much the work will cost depends on the area of \u200b\u200bthe room, its configuration (corners, protrusions) and the condition of the material.

Wooden parquet - the most reliable option floor covering. It is not surprising that it has been consistently popular for many years, especially among connoisseurs of everything natural. But over time, the floor, lined with parquet, loses its attractive appearance. But there is one way to restore its former attractiveness, which will help get rid of all scratches, stains and other traces of violent life. We are talking about sanding or sanding parquet. Moreover, it is not necessary to use the services of specialists, you can handle it yourself. Let's take a closer look at how do-it-yourself parquet grinding is performed, what equipment you will need for this.

When should you sand?

First you need to find out when you need to do grinding, and when - there is nothing to save and it's easier to just replace the parquet. In order to assess the degree of wear of the parquet, clean it from dust and dirt. It makes sense to do grinding when:

  • visible on the parquet small scratches, cracks, marks from the claws of pets and other defects.
  • Separate planks dried out and gaps appeared between them.
  • The polish has lost its luster and has become dull.
  • The planks loosened and began to creak.

When will grinding not save the day?

In some cases, grinding does not make sense:

  • When the parquet is very dry and the gaps between the planks are more than 5 mm.
  • The floor was heavily swollen after the flood.
  • If the surface is worn too much in places.
  • If there are insects in the tree.
  • If there is mold. In this case, you need to completely remove the old parquet, lay a waterproofing film, and only then re-lay a new coating.

What is needed for looping?

How to sand parquet floor? You can do the grinding manually using a cycle. This is a metal plate with a sharpened and curved edge. But such a process will be very laborious and will not justify itself.

It is better to rent special equipment. The scraping process consists of several stages, for each of which you need to use your own type of equipment:

  • Drum-type sanding equipment will remove deep layers of your old coating.
  • A single-disk or three-disk surface grinder will cost you dearly. This multifunctional device is used for fine sanding before tinting or varnishing.
  • The type of equipment, affectionately called “Boot”, will not interfere with you, which will help to polish all hard-to-reach places.

In addition, you will need:

  • Sandpaper of different grits.
  • Putty of the same tone as your coating. It will be needed in order to close up all the bumps and cracks.
  • You also need a powerful vacuum cleaner to remove all the debris later.
  • For the final step, you need a good, quick-drying polish.

Choosing equipment

When choosing equipment for floor scraping with your own hands, pay attention to the nuances:

  • Such equipment consumes power from 1 to 2.5 kW. Not every wiring in the house can withstand this. Especially if you are scraping in a country house.
  • Choose devices where you can easily and quickly change the sanding belt.

Important! If you have walnut parquet, then choose equipment with dust collectors for work. Dust from such parquet can stain the walls, and it will be difficult to clean them.

Preparatory stage

Before you start sanding the parquet with your own hands, you need to prepare the room. For this:

  • Move out all the furniture you can. If something cannot be taken out, then cover these things with a film to protect them from dust.
  • Clean the entire parquet from debris and dirt.
  • Tap all the slats. If a dull sound is heard somewhere, it means that there is a void under the board, you need to get rid of it. Drill a hole in the plank and fill the entire space with glue. This can be done with a syringe.
  • Nails must be removed or their heads sunk into the tree.
  • Dismantle the plinth.
  • Stock up on a respirator, thick gloves and noise-protective headphones.
  • Cover doorways with wet sheets. This will prevent the spread of dust.

Sanding parquet

Now we will describe directly the process of updating the flooring itself, because to admire its beauty and be satisfied with the quality natural wood can be for a long time.

How to sand parquet with your own hands?

  • Fill the machine with the coarsest sandpaper. Grinding is done first along the room, then across. The goal is to remove the old varnish and make the surface even.

Important! Monitor the condition of the sander. Change it on time. Heavily worn sandpaper can ruin the parquet.

  • After such rough processing, scratches and bumps remain. To remove them, continue sanding, but with fine-grained sandpaper. Work is carried out in the same way - up and down.

Important! Do not forget about hard-to-reach places, such as corners. Here you will come to the aid of "Boot" or manual cycle.

  • Now the parquet needs to be puttied. To do this, select the putty by color.
  • When the putty hardens, final grinding is needed. Slightly loosen the pressure of the grinder on the floor. This is done with a screw, which is found on any hardware.

Important! After this grinding, the coating should be perfectly smooth. You can check this by simply running your hand over it.

  • Now remove all debris and dust with a powerful industrial vacuum cleaner.

Parquet varnishing

Polished parquet must be varnished. Before you start varnishing, you must close all the windows in the room so that there are no drafts. The varnish is applied with a roller. The varnish dries quickly, so we advise you to do it very quickly. If the varnish dries unevenly, the procedure will have to be done again:

  1. First, a primer is applied.
  2. Then varnish is applied in three layers. Each layer must dry properly.
  3. The last layer is applied glossy varnish, which fixes the result.

What are varnishes?

Let's see what types of varnishes the modern market can offer us:

  • Polyurethane varnishes. Elastic, heat resistant, UV resistant. Not afraid of moisture and household chemicals. But such a varnish glues the planks together.

Important! If water gets into such a varnish during the varnishing process, it will begin to foam.

  • Waterborne varnishes. This is a new product on the market. After the water evaporates, it hardens. It does not release harmful chemicals.

Important! Not suitable for very cold rooms.

The ability of parquet to keep beautiful for a long time appearance is largely determined by the degree and correctness of care for him. Since the parquet floor is the most exploited part of the room, it is necessary not only to monitor the cleanliness of the floor covering, but also to polish the parquet in time. Polishing will not only restore shine, but also delay the time of scraping and restoration of parquet.

Parquet polishing- this is one of the measures for the care of a wooden floor, which consists in rubbing the surface of the parquet floor with a soft material using restorative agents.

Consider how parquet is rubbed at home, what mastics, wax, oils and polishes are better to use.

How often should parquet be polished?

The frequency of polishing depends on many factors:

  • coating usage intensity. The degree of wear is determined by the mechanical load that falls on the floor. The higher it is, the more often you need to polish the floor;
  • coating material. Oil-wax mixtures penetrate deeper into the pores of the wood, protecting the board, but not its surface. Dirt accumulates in the pores, and there is a need for polishing. Lacquer, on the contrary, creates a film, thanks to which the surface of the floor remains protected longer. On the other hand, the varnish is characterized by shine, and it is erased during operation (when walking);
  • room area. Determine the type of tool and convenient way its application;
  • budget. The cost of parquet polishing when doing the work with your own hands is reduced to the price of the material, and when ordering a service, it is determined by the performing company (or a private master). In any case, the procedure will require certain investments, money and time.

Users often do not make any calculations, but are guided by the appearance of the parquet floor.

Types of parquet polishing

There are several ways to process a wooden floor.

1. By application:

  • manual polishing of parquet. It is carried out manually or with a mop with a brush head using special tools;
  • machine polishing. It involves the use of floor polishers - one- or three-disk machines. The use of a polishing machine is justified on a large area, due to the high cost of equipment or its rental.

2. By type of surface:

  • glossy (to shine);
  • semi-gloss;
  • matte.

The choice depends on what decorative material the floor is covered with.

The most common type of coating are polishes, which allow you to get a semi-gloss surface. They are distinguished by: ease of application, environmental friendliness, drying speed, low price.

Parquet care products - which polish is better?

Good feedback have deserved means for polishing parquet boards of European manufacturers:

The materials listed in the table are suitable for polishing varnished parquet.

If oil was used as a finishing decorative coating, the surface should be polished using wax. Wax can also be the basis for using polishes.

Wax and wax polishes for parquet

Floor wax mixtures can be classified as follows:

1. By consistency:

  • liquid parquet wax. A convenient option, which is a ready-to-use mixture. Liquid wax does not create problems during application and can be applied to hard-to-reach places (H2Oil - 810 rubles / 0.75 l.);
  • paste wax for parquet. Option optimal in terms of application. Can be applied with a spatula, brush, rag;
  • hard wax for parquet. Needs to be mixed with water. This option is convenient in that it allows you to get the perfect shade for a particular gender (for example, Homastic - 221 rubles / 25 g).

2. By composition:

  • oil-wax- a thick mixture that penetrates well into the pores of the wood, provides a pleasant soft sheen to the floor surface, is applied every six months;
  • polish. Contains only wax, water and polymers. Apply once a month.

3. By color:

  • colorless. Universal composition that does not change the shade of the parquet board (American Wood Oil Clear - 212 rubles / 0.2 l);
  • dark- for dark woods (Homastic 221 rubles / 25 gr);
  • bleaching- for light wood species (Tehopesu Tikkurila - 900 rubles / 0.5 l; Neomid 500 - 300 rubles / 1 l.)

Before using polishes and oils, clean the surface of the floor from dirt. For these purposes, it is advisable to use special means For basic cleaning of varnished or oiled parquet. Good reviews about TM Dr. Schutz (polish - 910 rubles / 0.75 l).

Folk remedies for polishing parquet

In addition to those mentioned, there are folk recipes for polishing the parquet floor at home, among them are:

  • wax (bees) with oil (olive, coconut, citrus) in the ratio of 2 tablespoons of wax to 7 tbsp. l. oils. The mixture is heated in a water bath or microwave until the hard wax dissolves. Absolutely eco-friendly mixture, suitable for polishing the floor in the children's room and bedrooms. Such a means for polishing parquet can be harvested for the future. Shelf life - 1 year (when using olive oil) and 2 years (citrus).
  • wax and turpentine. The components are mixed in equal parts. In this case, the wax is heated in a water bath, then turpentine is gradually poured into it. After the components are combined, the composition is removed from the bath and cooled with constant stirring until the mixture solidifies completely.

Attention! Turpentine is a flammable agent, when working with it, you must follow safety rules.

Below are a few techniques on how to rub parquet to make it shine or become matte.

Polishing varnished parquet

The process of polishing parquet flooring under varnish is carried out in several stages:

  • cleaning the floor surface from dust and debris;
  • wet cleaning. It is recommended to use special parquet cleaners;
  • applying polish after complete drying of the prepared floor surface;
  • hardening of the applied mixture (12-20 hours depending on the type);
  • applying a second coat of polish (if necessary). The second layer is applied perpendicular to the direction of application of the first.

Polishing oiled parquet

There are two options to choose from depending on the conditions and opportunities.

cold way:

  • surface cleaning;
  • applying a thin layer of oil;
  • removal of excess oil 5-7 minutes after application (performed with a soft rag);
  • polishing with a polishing machine;
  • application of the second layer (after 5-12 hours). Oil consumption will decrease as the wood is already saturated with oil;
  • after the appearance of a "satin" sheen, the surface is considered polished.

The method is good because it does not require the use of special equipment.

hot way:

  • cleaning the floor surface;
  • heating the oil to a temperature of 80 ° C in a water bath;
  • applying oil to the floor using a spatula;
  • rubbing oil into wood using a thermal pad;

    Note. Before applying the oil, it is recommended to warm up the parquet, for this purpose a thermal pad is used. On a warm surface, the oil is applied more evenly, since the process of its cooling is slowed down.

  • if necessary, a second coat of oil is applied. Usually such a need arises in places with an increased load on the parquet.

The method is good because it allows the oil to penetrate deeper into the pores of the wood and increases its service life.

Waxed parquet polishing

  • wax is applied 2 days after applying the oil;
  • waxing is done using a thermal pad;
  • After drying, it is polished with a thermal pad.

The technology is good because it allows you to eliminate scratches on the surface of the wood.

Floor polishing is an easy and cost-effective way to restore your parquet to its luxurious appearance and extend its lifespan.

A lot of non-informative and worthless articles have been written about do-it-yourself parquet scraping, which poorly reveal the topic. Sometimes you read an article and do not understand anything in it, you even get confused. An attempt is not torture, but once again about how to independently restore any parquet floors.

Before deciding to independent work, study the issue thoroughly so as not to get up and think, what's next and what to do.

Parquet sanding tool and accessories

For self-polishing parquet, you need to have 3 grinders that can sand the floors as well as possible, with your zero skills. Equipment can be rented. Do not look for the cheapest rental, otherwise you can take a poorly functioning device. Look for an office that equips not only with equipment, but also with varnish chemistry, abrasives.

  1. Belt sander - Lagler Hummel and its analogues (do not take CO-206 - you will ruin your floor with this machine).
  2. Three-disk surface grinder - Lagler Trio or CO-318 (these machines are exactly the same).
  3. Corner machine - Lagler Flip or analogues.
  4. Eccentric manual vibro machine with a diameter of 120 mm. (For local elimination of detected pits and scratches from the draw frame).
  5. Putty spatula 20-30 cm long. Small spatula.
  6. Fishing rod, roller handle and varnish roller. Small roller with a handle.
  7. A vacuum cleaner.
  8. Washing mop.

Abrasives

Under the technique you need abrasive materials. You can buy them from the company. We recommend taking an abrasive with a margin so that it is enough for you. Return the excess when you return the equipment. For each machine you will be given the right type of abrasive, do not get confused.

Parquet sanding always starts with a belt machine, then an angle grinder and then a three-disc machine. At the end of grinding, minor flaws are eliminated with an eccentric manual machine.

And so, if the parquet is old and in poor condition with poured varnish, then such parquet must be sanded with numbers P24 or P36, and after sanding off the varnish, it is necessary to increase the numbers by P40, P60 and P80. If the parquet is not heavily killed, then parquet grinding can be started with P40 abrasive. Stop sanding parquet draw frame it is possible on the P60 abrasive, since the three-disc machine will grind the floor until the risks are eliminated further.

On a three-disc machine, you can put abrasive numbers P40, P60, P80, P100 and P120. If the parquet has a lot of scratches and pits, then start sanding the floor with P40 and finish with P100 or P120.

An abrasive can be placed on the corner machine, starting with P24 (P36 or P40), then P60 and P80.

Parquet sanding procedure

First, the parquet is sanded with a belt machine, which removes the old varnish and more or less levels the floor plane. We reach with it the abrasive P60. Then we grind the old varnish with an angle grinder. After that, we putty the parquet with a wide stainless steel spatula. I'm waiting for an hour. After the putty dries, we continue to grind the parquet with a tape machine number P60, then we continue to work on the corner. After the putty is removed, we go through the finishing passes with a three-disc machine from the number P40 or P60, finishing sanding at the number P100 or P120. After grinding is completed, it is necessary to carefully examine the floor for pits and scratches. If any are found, touch it up manually with an eccentric machine, and possibly start the surface grinder again.

How to walk cars along the parquet

The initial passes of the draw frame must be carried out at an angle of 45 degrees with respect to the dies. Then turn around and finish the opposite side. And then turn around 90 degrees and continue grinding. You should get a cross. Crossing will level the floor. When increasing abrasive numbers, keep this cross.

Three-disc and angle machine can be walked as you like.

Grinding quality check

You can check the quality of parquet sanding in a simple way, take a flashlight, put it on the floor and illuminate the surface. Scattered light will reveal all your shortcomings, which are not too late to eliminate. This is especially true of near-wall places where grinding is the worst.

Preparing the floor for varnishing

The floor must be thoroughly vacuumed before varnishing. Do not wash!

Parquet varnishing

Before varnishing parquet, and even before sanding it, you need to study in advance the instructions for applying the varnish that you purchase. It is advisable to purchase varnish in the same place where you will rent equipment. Check with the manager, he will tell you what they have available and how to apply it.

When varnishing parquet yourself, you need to purchase water-soluble varnishes, they are easier to work with and easy to restore the surface if something goes wrong. Apply such varnishes should be at least 3 layers, preferably 4 or 5 layers. Before finishing varnishing, interlayer grinding with a P150 mesh should be carried out, then cleaning with a vacuum cleaner and a washing mop.

conclusions

What a great article it turned out, now you understand how hard it is to understand and remember everything in order to polish the parquet on your own.
