Case for a flash drive made of wood, a detailed master class with photos. For craftsmen

There are cases when, during operation, the body of the flash drive does not withstand and collapses (small children do an excellent job of disassembling).

On kickstarter, a similar project was approved and raised the necessary amount of money for its implementation.

We will not collect money and place applications, we will try to implement a similar project on our own.

Suddenly something is not clear, then watch the video:

To make an eternal case, we need:
- titanium BT1-0
- die M18*1.5
-tap M18*1.5
- cutter HSS d 14.5
-machine

1. We make and prepare the workpiece. The total length of the workpiece is 64mm.

2. Cut off the workpiece with a length of 38mm. From this part we will make the lower part of the flash drive case.

3. Making a hole with a diameter of 14.5mm

4. We prepare a platform for cutting external threads using a die M18 * 1.5

5. The bottom of the flash drive almost finished looks like this (it remains only to polish).

6. We prepare the upper part of the flash drive (cap).

7. We make a selection inside the cap.

8. We chamfer the outside and prepare a place for the ring.

9. We cut the thread in the cap using a tap M18 * 1.5.

10. We make a hole for the ring.

11. The body is ready.

12. In my case, we take an 8GB flash drive.

13. We extract from the standard case.

14. Place in heat shrink.

15. Then we place the prepared flash drive in a titanium case. Pour hot glue (so it will be easier to remove the flash drive if it fails). Some are filled with epoxy, this is 100% forever (unless you just burn it out).

16. We check for strength with a car.

A flash drive is a universal gift that will come in handy in every home. You can record your favorite songs on it or make a selection of good photos. This is a great surprise for a birthday or other holiday. Everyone can fill it to their taste, but you will learn how to turn an ordinary flash drive into an author's gift with your own hands from our master class!

Materials and tools

Today we will make a case for a flash drive with our own hands from wood using the following materials:
- a small wooden block (in our case it is a birch burl),
- a flash drive with a collapsible case,
- 2 metal bolsters for a flash drive (you can buy them, for example, here),
- several different grinding skins,
- drill cutter,
- epoxy adhesive.

Instruction

The whole manufacturing process is quite simple and does not take much time. It took about 2 hours for one product, not counting the time for the glue to harden.
This is a beautiful author's gift that can be given to a close or unfamiliar person, teenager or adult. The wooden case is comfortable and pleasant to hold in hands, such a card is durable and at the same time unique.
Here's another one interesting idea how to make a flash drive from an ordinary lighter!

I’ll warn you right away that there are far from all the photos here, because there are more than 100 of them (and here there are 22), so I’ll partially tell.

In general, a friend asked me to make a case for his flash drive (because he saw my previous work and he liked it, I decided to do something similar). This time I used not only birch suvel, but also a layer of wenge wood. I had already sawn off a bar of suveli earlier, comparing it with the size of the flash drive and taking into account the grinding of irregularities after sawing and the removal of defects in the wood itself (they are not visible in the photo, they are on the underside), I realized that on such a bar you can’t go wild with forms.

I wanted to make a hole for the chain, but alas ... but the dimensions will be minimal.

I scratched the pumpkin and decided to make just a classic case with small rounded edges and corners, with thin walls.

Bolster decided to make from a five-ruble coin of 1997, under the top layer of cupronickel, it turned out to be copper inside. Sanded and polished on one side, on the other just sanded (because you need a rough surface for better gluing).

I marked a hole for the flash drive connector, made several holes with a drill, a 4mm drill and then filed off with files.

Further, to speed up the process and obtain smoother surfaces (during manual grinding, the workpiece is always slightly rounded towards the edges), I made emery from an old hard disk, removed the head, and glued sandpaper with grain 60 on the upper pancake on double-sided tape.

This unit is connected by a regular molex to an ATX PSU from a computer.

To "start" the power supply without motherboard, it is enough to close the green and black wires on the 20 (24) pin.

Do not do this if you are not sure and there are not enough skills!

The emery turned out to be ardent, 7200 revolutions 🙂
When grinding, my finger accidentally slipped and touched the surface, in a split second the skin was removed to the point of blood. Unfortunately, the torque is rather weak, but enough for me for such work.

Suvel sawed along, did it with a good old friend Dremel 4000.

Wenge was brought to me by a friend (to whom he made a flash drive), it was a blank for a knife handle. I sawed off a small piece from it, it turned out to be not so easy, very dense wood. I sharpened all these blocks on my new sandpaper.

Next, I marked out the parts where the cap would be, and sawed them off the bars. In the “body” of wenge, I cut out a seat for a flash drive (I cut it out with a saw blade and turned it with needle files for a long time, somewhere around 2.5 hours, because the wood is very dense, and the work is small, I wanted to make bumpers to hold the board).

There was a small green LED on the board, signaling the transfer of data to a USB flash drive, I wanted to keep its information content and on the half of the suveli, which will be located opposite this LED, I sawed a hole with a thin cutter-needle, covered it with adhesive tape on one side and filled it with transparent epoxy. Next, I glued this “sandwich”, holding it with such clamps for the night.

I glued the bolster onto the same glue, waited until it hardened and cut off its excess, then I grinded off everything superfluous on emery bars and slightly trimmed it again on sandpaper.

Next, let's start creating the cap. We cut out a piece from the previously sawn off part with the letter P (we look for the pattern to match). To fix the cap, I used the USB female connector, shortening it to clips and taking out all the insides. I sawed recesses in wenge in order to fix the connector.

Because the connector itself is slightly more than the thickness of wenge, then in the halves of the suveli I had to make small indentations. Then I smeared everything with glue, corrected it so that the wenge part of the cap strictly continued the wenge part of the flash drive (it was in one line, otherwise the crookedness would spoil all the work), since the epoxy from syringes polymerizes very quickly and literally after 3 minutes I released the cap and clamped it for the night in a clamp. Here is such a knob turned out 🙂

We grind off the excess of the cap and then, together with the flash drive, we process it a bit on sandpaper.

To avoid chips on the body, I rounded all the edges and corners. And then finishing sequential grinding, first 60 (on emery), then 240, then 320, then 600, then 1200 and finish 2500. The surface turned out to be very smooth, and the wenge layer became almost mirror-like.

This oil is designed to protect against moisture and UV exotic woods. In general, it’s to your taste, you could use another, but I only had this and linen, it polymerizes for a long time and “chocolates” the tree quite strongly. And this is quite good oil, colorless. I repeated the oil with a cloth in a flash drive, plentifully. Drying implemented on cotton swabs 🙂

After 5 hours, soaked in another plentiful layer. This is what she looked like after the treatment.

Next, to further protect the flash drive, I impregnated it with carnauba wax. For reference, carnauba wax is the hardest and most refractory (melting point + 83 ... + 91 ° C) of vegetable and animal waxes. Since the last time I had a mixture of this: wax + rosin + something else 🙂

I found this jar, warmed it up, “cooked” a flash drive in it for a couple of minutes. He brought it to the workbench, while clapping his eyes, before he could get it out, the wax cooled down and such a yummy turned out.

He warmed it up again, took out the flash drive and removed the excess wax, then again took the dremel in his hands, the nozzle - a felt circle of a larger diameter and let's rub it. Then an hour rubbed on the fabric. The result is this.

The darkish tint in the photo is due to evening lighting. This is what it looks like on the side.

On the corner of the cap, you can see that the wenge reflects light (as I wrote before, almost a mirror). Like this from a different angle, you can see the reflected light from the monitor.

The photo shows the texture of wenge, there are small hollow inclusions.

Upon completion, I decided to check how it blinks through an impromptu light guide.

Shines great 🙂

Well, the final photos in daylight (the bolster is a little dirty).

Fpeshka is a modern and very symbolic gift that everyone will appreciate. But the plastic cases of USB drives do not look very presentable. If you want to make your gift pleasant not only in terms of the attention you have given, but also aesthetically spectacular, work hard and make a wooden case for a flash drive with your own hands.

materials

To make a wooden case for a USB drive with your own hands, prepare:

  • the flash drive itself;

  • a block of wood of any breed;

  • wood glue;

  • linseed oil or stain;

  • hot glue;

  • milling machine or hand tool for woodworking;

  • saw;

  • grinder;

  • sandpaper.

Step 1. From the bar you have, cut a piece 6 - 7 mm thick. The section parameters in this case were 55 x 55 mm.

Step 2. After cutting off the bar, carefully sand it for further work.

Step 3. Considering the parameters of the plastic case of the flash drive you have chosen, sketch out its prototype on paper. Attach it to the cut piece of wood, and then start making a groove for the internal stuffing of the flash drive. The depth of each groove should be 2.4 mm.

Step 4. Cut a part of the bar with grooves into two parts of the flash drive body. Sand them down.

Step 5. Disassemble the plastic case of the flash drive, leaving only its internal component and port.

Step 6. Place the flash drive circuit into one of the blanks of the wooden case. Secure it in place in the correct position with a dab of hot glue.

Step 7. Lubricate the halves of the wooden case with wood glue. Clamp it and place it in a vise. Remove excess glue immediately.

It always looks bright and unusual, especially if it's a flash drive in a wooden case. However, for this you will have to spend a lot of time and effort, but believe me - the result will be worth it. In order to make an original flash with your own hands, you will need: three planks, sharp knife, cutter, drills for wood and metal, needle file, file, epoxy and super glue.

Homemade case for a flash drive made of wood with your own hands

First you need to cut out three boards that will be larger in size than the board from the flash drive. One board should be made from a tree that is different from the other two - this will give the craft an interesting and stylish look.

In the end, this is exactly what your three blanks should look like.

Now in the central board you need to make a hole into which the flash card should be fixed. The hole should fit very well in size, and its edges can be smeared with super glue.

Now you need to make a hard layer so that the flash drive does not break with a significant physical activity. For example, because it often happens that flash drives simply break out of their plastic cases, then what can we say about wooden ones.

For this, a ruble coin is perfect, which must be carefully cleaned with sandpaper. (Almost polished). Then with the help epoxy resin glue the metal blank to the wooden case. In advance, of course, with a drill and a needle file, we make a hole in the coin, into which the USB connector will pass.

You should end up with such a “rough” flash drive, with which you still have to work a lot. In a similar way, guided by the above instructions, you should make a cover for your author's crafts. Please note that after all the operations performed, the craft does not yet look stylish.

In order for the author's flash drive to acquire a truly “presentation”, the blank must be carefully processed with a file. After that, the surface can be treated with varnish (or you can leave the natural wood flooring intact) Agree that such a craft will be a truly original accessory. I can bet that you will not find such a flash drive in anyone.
