Technology for changing hydraulic oil in automatic transmissions. Which oil change in automatic transmission is better - full or partial? Is it possible to "heal" the box in this way

A guarantee of long-term and reliable operation of automatic transmissions is high-quality and regularly changed oil, which performs a number of important functions. First of all, it is the lubrication of rubbing parts, the neutralization of wear products that form during operation, maintaining the desired temperature through heat removal, followed by cooling through a radiator.

How to independently change the oil in an automatic transmission?

At first glance, everything looks quite complicated, but in fact, the replacement oils in automatic transmission with your own hands is available even to an inexperienced driver, you just need to carefully study the material we offer.

According to ATF standards, automatic transmission oil must be completely changed after 50 thousand kilometers and with a subsequent update every 20 thousand kilometers by draining 30-40% of the total volume. Each driver must know how to change the oil in an automatic box, but for this he must be familiar with the signs by which he can accurately determine impending problems. First of all, these are the noises that occur during the operation of the box, hard and long gear changes, as well as a change in the color of the oil or occasional smells of burnt oil.

The fluid changes partially or completely.

  • With a partial replacement, the process of replacing the liquid consists in the usual draining of the old and filling in the new, however, only a part of the total volume changes, because more than half remains in the various nodes of the box. This is often not enough for subsequent normal operation.
  • For a complete replacement, special equipment is required so that all fluid is pumped out of the system, the system is flushed and new is filled in.

We must say right away that a complete oil change should be carried out in a car service. Sometimes the filter is also changed along with the liquid, but this is not necessary, and due to various circumstances it can be quite difficult. As a result, it is better to completely entrust this work to the specialists of the service center.

Partial oil change

If you decide to do a partial oil change with your own hands, then you will need about 5 liters of it. However, an incomplete replacement will need to be carried out more often in order for the old one that has already been worked out to leave the system (approximately every 30,000 kilometers). For a complete replacement, about 10 liters will be required.

The advantages of this method:

  • cheapness;
  • a small amount of liquid;
  • filter and pan cleaning;
  • significantly less risk of damage to the box.

However, to obtain the expected result, you need to perform this procedure several times. We will show the replacement process using the example of a Nissan car:

  1. The car must be raised with a jack, or use a pit. The photo shows the location of the drain hole and the bolts securing the pan, under which the filter is located. With incomplete replacement, it is not necessary to change the filter, as a result of which it is also not necessary to remove the pan.

  2. In order not to get your hands dirty, carry out all work with gloves, place some kind of container under the drain hole. Loosen the drain plug a little using the "19" wrench. Then manually unscrew it completely. Here you need to be careful because the liquid can pour on your hands.

  3. Wait for the liquid to drain completely, check how many liters have drained in total. As mentioned above, with an incomplete replacement, about 40% of the total volume should merge. In order to determine the volume of liquid that has drained, pour it into a bottle or some other container with a volume you know.

  4. Next, when you determine how much oil has drained, pull the dipstick out of the fill hole, insert a funnel into it, and then you need to fill in the same volume of new fluid.

  5. Insert the probe back. Start the car and wait approximately 5-10 minutes. Get into the car and alternate gears from P to 2, and then back to P. Between shifts, you must maintain an interval of 2-3 seconds. Then use the dipstick to check the oil level again. If it turns out to be insufficient, then top up.

Complete oil change

In order to completely change the fluid, special equipment is needed that connects to the automatic transmission system. The oil change takes place in 3 stages.

  1. The first is a liquid specially designed for this purpose.
  2. The second stage is the replacement of old oil with a new one by punching. The old fluid will be replaced by a new one and thus its complete change will occur.
  3. And finally, the third stage is the change of the filter and pan gasket.

This method is excellent for reducing gasoline consumption, significantly reducing losses in the hydroformat. Due to the fact that the fluid change occurs under sufficient pressure, the gearbox system is almost completely cleaned, not only old oil, but also any deposits remain in it. Naturally, a complete fluid change is much more expensive than a partial one, but the guarantee for normal operation after this procedure is much higher.

Where to change?

If we talk about where it is better to replace the transmission fluid, then here you first need to decide what kind of replacement it will be, partial or complete.

  • If the replacement is partial, then you can do without on your own by doing all the work yourself. To do this, you need a garage, preferably with a pit.
  • In the case of a complete replacement, it is best to contact a specialized car service center for your brand.

After watching this video, you can independently change the lubricant in an automatic transmission.

We hope this article helped you, but if you disagree or know a better way, please share it in the comments.

There are three ways to change the oil in an automatic transmission.

1. Do-it-yourself partial oil change in automatic transmission.

Before replacing, it is necessary to check the oil level in an automatic transmission, how to do this, we read. The sequence of actions is as follows:

The old oil will mix with the new. If it is necessary to change more than 40-30% of the oil, the procedure should be repeated 3-4 times after the car has traveled 200-500 km.

Advantages of the partial oil change method.

Minuses.

  • Higher total consumption if a complete oil change is required.
  • As a result, a 100% oil change will not work.

2. Complete oil change in automatic transmission using special equipment.

With this method, a 100% oil change occurs using special equipment. With the help of devices (mainly by Wynns), the oil in the automatic transmission is replaced by the punching method. What does it consist of:

  • The tubes of the apparatus are connected to the automatic transmission through the transmission cooling radiator.
  • Next, the engine starts.
  • New oil is poured in, old oil is drained.

Through the technological window, you can control the color of ATP. When the desired color is achieved, the process can be completed. When changing the oil using this method, it takes about 10-12 liters.

The advantages of changing the oil in an automatic transmission in the service.

  • There is no cheating with the amount of ATP poured into your car.
  • The process can be monitored visually.
  • A complete oil change in the automatic transmission greatly reduces losses in the torque converter, which significantly reduces gasoline consumption.
  • As a rule, automatic transmissions after that become “faster”
  • All work is done by a professional.

Minuses.

  • The technical center will give a guarantee for their work, but not for the normal operation of the automatic transmission after that (the “useful” deposits are washed out).
  • The cost of this method is higher than in the first case.

3. Do-it-yourself complete oil change in automatic transmission.

It consists in a complete do-it-yourself oil change in the gearbox:

  • It is necessary to warm up the automatic transmission (drive at least 5 km).
  • Drive the car into the pit and muffle it.
  • Drain as much oil as possible.
  • Open the tray.
  • Carefully remove the filter.
  • Rinse the filter (solvent or gasoline, dry).
  • Wash tray.
  • Put everything back.
  • Fill in as much ATP as spilled out, you can a little more.
  • Disconnect the oil drain pipes from the cooling radiator.
  • Put hoses on the oil channels that descend into a container of a suitable size for draining the ATP.
  • We start the engine, after which, after a few seconds, oil will pour out of the hose.
  • We look when the color of the leaking oil becomes like that of fresh oil, it is necessary to turn off the engine.
  • We remove the hoses, attach the tubes back.
  • We check the oil level.

The advantages of a complete do-it-yourself oil change in an automatic transmission.

  • Cheaper.

Minuses.

  • We are not professionals.

Different car manufacturers specify their own standards for replacement. Depending on the make and age of the vehicle, the frequency of oil changes may vary.

On average, there is an established rule that on a new car it is necessary to check the oil level for the first time after you have driven 1,200 - 1,500 kilometers. After the first check, it is necessary to change the oil every 25 - 30 thousand kilometers or as needed.

Replacement may be needed much sooner. For example, if there was a fluid leak, an accident or other problems. In order not to miss the moment when you need to change the oil, it is necessary to control the level.

Oil level control

By checking the oil level in your car yourself, you can determine whether you need to partially or completely change the fluid or not yet. Consider the instruction:

  • first of all, it is important that the car is on a horizontal platform;
  • move the automatic transmission lever to position P (parking);
  • the engine does not turn off;
  • take the dipstick to check the level, which is located on the gearbox;
  • if it is dirty, be sure to wipe it with a rag;
  • there is a marking on the dipstick indicating the maximum and minimum oil levels in this machine;
  • insert the dipstick and remove it after a minute;
  • The dipstick will indicate the current oil level.

There are several important points. Firstly, if there is no dipstick at the checkpoint and it is not supposed to be there, then this means that in this car the oil in the gearbox is not changed. Secondly, it is necessary to check the oil level at an engine temperature of 90 degrees.

If during the check it is found that the oil level is below the specified norm, then it is important to quickly solve this problem. Otherwise, a reduction in the service life of the gearbox, as well as breakage of components, is possible.

Too much fluid also negatively affects the operation of the car. Excess will be squeezed out of the box, which leads to contamination of the gearbox and difficulty in operation.

It is extremely important to change the oil even when normal level if there is a smell of burning or the color of the liquid has become too dark.

In any car, you can carry out two types of oil changes: partial and complete. Let's consider both options in detail.

Partial replacement

Partial oil change in automatic transmission is a more traditional method, as it allows even a non-professional to do this. In this case, the fluid is simply updated by draining the excess and adding new oil. After such a procedure, about 30 - 40% is updated.

The huge advantage of this method is that it can be easily carried out by yourself without additional help in the service station. Also, the method is quite economical, since it takes a small amount to update the oil. If you yourself want to change more than 40% of the oil, you can repeat the above procedure several times after every 400 - 500 km of run.

Complete replacement

A complete replacement without the help of a professional is almost impossible, with the exception of those car owners who are ready to risk the performance of their car because of a few hundred rubles. To do this, you need to use special equipment, which can be easily found in many service stations. 100% oil change by punching. That is, by filling in a new liquid, the device displaces the old one.

On average, a complete oil change in a standard sedan requires about 10 to 12 liters of new oil. The big disadvantage is that no service will ever give you a guarantee for the operation of the gearbox after a complete replacement. The warranty that is issued by the service applies only to their work.

After carrying out such a procedure, gasoline consumption is significantly reduced for every 100 km, and the operation of the automatic transmission improves in general.

Changing the oil in an automatic transmission at a service center, the price of a service

It is impossible to unequivocally name the cost of an oil change in Russia. The price is formed taking into account the average prices in the market, as well as great importance has what kind of machine and what kind of replacement is carried out.

If we consider proposals in the regions, then the average cost of a partial replacement is from 100 to 300 rubles. A complete replacement is an order of magnitude more expensive - from 300 to 600 rubles. In the capital, many companies work based on the time spent on the procedure. On average, a partial oil change in Moscow will cost 400 - 600 rubles, completely - from 1,000 to 3,500.

Self-changing oil in an automatic gearbox

Consider detailed instructions how to independently change the oil in the automatic box, and also what is needed for this.

Before starting the replacement, you must check for:

  • filter;
  • gaskets for plugs;
  • pallet pads.

Also, if it is planned to drain the oil, it is necessary to prepare a container for this in advance.

Oil selection

It is very important to choose the right oil, for this you need to carefully study the manual for the car. It spells out in detail what properties it should have, what viscosity class to have and what brand to be.

It must be borne in mind that if a partial replacement is carried out, then it is highly undesirable to mix different oils. It is better to find exactly the one that has already been filled in the automatic transmission.
There are three types of oil known:

  • thick (mineral) - more often used on older machines;
  • synthetic - most often used on almost all modern cars;
  • semi-synthetic - the average option that you can choose if there is no synthetic.

Partial Replacement Procedure

Independent partial replacement is carried out as follows:

  • the car is put on a horizontal platform;
  • unscrew the drain plug, which is located on the gearbox pan;
  • drain the oil;
  • check the volume of drained oil;
  • based on the volume, add new;
  • check the level with a dipstick;
  • start the car and wait 10 minutes;
  • alternately switch all gears from P to 2, and then in the reverse order;
  • check the oil level again;
  • add more if necessary.

The whole procedure takes about 15 – 20 minutes depending on your experience and vehicle.

Do-It-Yourself Complete Oil Change

Despite the fact that professionals strongly do not recommend changing the oil completely on their own, there are detailed instructions for this:

  • it is necessary to install the machine on a horizontal platform;
  • unscrew the drain plug and wait until all the oil has drained;
  • turn the crankshaft so that the plug from the torque converter is in the lowest position;
  • unscrew the plug and re-drain all the oil;
  • we replace the gasket on the pallet of the box and on the cork;
  • fill in the required amount of oil (sometimes indicated in the manual);
  • we start the car and repeat the steps, as with a partial replacement.
