Story

At the beginning of the 20th century, among the intensively developing primary education territories included the Tobolsk province, in which by 1911 there were only 624 primary schools, and the opening of new educational institutions was hampered by a lack of teaching staff.

The decision to open a teacher's seminary in Barnaul with an elementary school was made on May 20, 1915, based on the approval of the state list of income and expenses for 1915.

The "Plan for compiling a network of teacher's institutes" also included Novonikolaevsk and Barnaul of the Tomsk province, and within the "extensive" Tobolsk province. The idea of petitioning the government to open a third teacher's institute in Barnaul was put forward by the trustee of the West Siberian educational district, L. I. Lavrentiev.

The Barnaul Teachers' Institute was established on September 1, 1933, in 1941 it was renamed the Pedagogical Institute.

The first graduation of the Barnaul Teachers' Institute took place in 1935. It was graduated by 17 historians, 22 philologists, 30 mathematical physicists.

The beginning of 1936 was marked by the graduation of 45 teachers of chemistry and biology. By 1947, 720 teachers became graduates of the full-time department of the institute, 409 people were trained by the correspondence department. To these figures should be added 39 teachers who received higher education in the evening pedagogical institute, the fate of which has already been discussed.

In 1937-39, many employees of the institute were repressed, including director Yuferov, Andrey Petrovich, deputy director Kozyr, Fedosey Sidorovich, etc. Several teachers, fearing arrest, fled from Barnaul - writer Parilov, teacher of military affairs Kurze ( Kurzo). Under the list of those who were shot, in which the names of Kozyr and Kurzo are indicated, is the signature of Shapiro I. I. The executed were buried on the territory of Barnaul. In 1937, the NKVD arrested the institute's supply manager, former pilot Koshkin. After some time, it turned out that the accusations were false. From the memoirs of a person who went through repression:

One of the methods of influence is “conveyor interrogations”, when they ask for a day, two, three in a row, without a break, only the investigators change. And you don't sit, you stand. They put you face to the wall, if you decide to speak or sign - you will say. How long do you think a person can stand like that? I stood for three days. The legs swell, the blood vessels begin to burst, you feel how little by little, in thin streams, blood flows. But I was cunning: I had wide trousers, so I could shift imperceptibly from foot to foot. The first time was up to three days. No food, no water, nothing...

To these figures should be added 39 teachers who received their higher education at the evening pedagogical institute, the fate of which has already been discussed.

Most of the teachers of the new university were real devotees, such as, for example, the first rector (then director) Alexei Pavlovich Shchekotinsky. A native of the Pavlovsk region Altai Territory, after civil war he worked first as a rural teacher, then as director of the Barnaul Pedagogical College. After completing courses at the Academy of Communist Education, with the assistance of N.K. Krupskaya became the head of the teacher's institute. Initially, the institute had six special departments: physics and mathematics (headed by I. G. Sokolov), language and literature (headed by P.F. Rusanov), chemistry (headed by P.M. Ivanov), history (headed by N .Ya. Ivanov), Marxist-Leninist philosophy (headed by A.P. Yuferov), pedagogy (headed by O.A. Shestakova).

Repressions of 1937-39
