In the Orphanage, orphans were given not only food and shelter, but also a profession. Here the foundations of female pedagogical education were laid: classes were created for the training of governesses, mentors, teachers of music, languages, callisthenia ( physical education). In 1837, the classes were reorganized into the Orphan Institute, which received the name of Emperor Nicholas I in 1855. For girls from heterogeneous families, the Alexandrinsky Orphan Institute was created, which in 1905 became the first women's vocational school to train nannies, milliners, and teachers for primary heterogeneous schools.

In 1903, on the basis of commercial pedagogical courses of the Orphanage, it was established (since 1912 - Imperial). He produced subject teachers for gymnasiums. This institute became the country's first state institution of higher education for women.

Architectural and landscape complex of the university[ | ]

Object of cultural heritage of Russia of federal significance
reg. No. 781520386240006(EGROKN)
object No. 7810587004(Wikipedia DB)

The main territory of the university occupies most of the quarter bounded by Nevsky Prospekt, Kazanskaya Street, Gorokhovaya Street and the Moika River Embankment (postal address - Moika River Embankment, 48).

Currently, there are two entrances to the main territory - from Kazanskaya Street and from the Moika River Embankment at the intersection with Gorokhovaya Street. Entrance is by electronic passes.

On the Moika, 48 buildings of different eras (baroque, early classicism, empire, late classicism) are among the most mature monuments of the corresponding periods in the history of architecture. The architectural complex has an original picturesque appearance due to the free, asymmetric arrangement of architectural structures, monuments, park compositions. The complex of buildings occupied by the Herzen University is included in the UNESCO list of world heritage sites under international protection.

Separate faculties of the Herzen University are located in other parts of the city.

Main building [ | ]

The main building of the university - the palace of K. G. Razumovsky - is located at Moika embankment, 48 (architects A. F. Kokorinov, Wallen-Delamot). Since 1797, the Petersburg Orphanage was located in the palace, since 1834 - the orphan's department (since 1837 - the Nikolaev Orphan's Institute), since 1918 - pedagogical institute(now the Russian State Pedagogical University named after A. I. Herzen).

The entire second floor of the building is pierced by a corridor, the walls of which are decorated with paintings dedicated to the past of the orphanage (mainly landscapes). Corridor extensions form three halls - Custodial, Imperial and Rector's (from north to south). These halls contain portraits of people who played a significant role in the formation and development of the Orphanage, the Leningrad Pedagogical Institute, Herzen University.

Today, the Razumovsky Palace, according to the internal university numbering, is the 5th building (it is also the “main building”). Now the building houses the administration of the university and some services. Scientific conferences, congresses, round tables. The solemn presentation of red diplomas to the best graduates takes place here every year.

Between the 5th building and Kazanskaya street there is an "Old" garden. When, after the revolution, all the buildings on the Moika were occupied by a higher educational institution, here, in the Old Garden, in a small two-story outbuilding, a children's hearth (orphanage) functioned for several more years, then a building was built on this site, where the specialized Children's Home No. 10 was located . IN early XXI century, the dilapidated building was demolished and a modern electrical substation was built in its place in the garden, replicating the appearance of the wing.

From the side of Kazanskaya Street, the garden is limited by a lattice, designed by A. N. Voronikhin and which is part of the ensemble of Kazanskaya Square.

Other buildings on the Moika[ | ]

Houses 50 and 52

Neighboring buildings (Moika embankment, 50 and 52) are also buildings of the former Petersburg Orphanage. House 50 was built in 1750-1753 according to the design of F.-B. Shot for the wealthy merchant G. Kh. Stegelman. In 1764, Stegelman's house was purchased by the treasury. In 1765-1768. the building was rebuilt in the Classicist style, designed by the architect Antonio Rinaldi. Later, the main building and side wings were built on, Stegelman's house and Razumovsky's palace were connected by a three-story building, extensions were made from the side of the garden.

The building at number 52 was built at the beginning of the 19th century, purchased for the Educational Home in 1834. Rebuilt in -1943 according to the project of the architect P. S. Plavov. In front of the building in 1868, a bust of Ivan Ivanovich Betsky was installed - an enlarged copy made by the sculptor A.P. Lavretsky from the original by Ya. I. Zemelgak (1803).

Behind houses 50 and 52 is "Mama's garden". According to some reports, it got its name from the fact that nannies-"mothers" walked here with the young pets of the Orphanage; according to others, the name comes from the fact that it was in this garden that poor families brought unwanted newborn children to be kept and raised in the Orphanage.

The Russian State Pedagogical University named after A.I. Herzen considers itself the successor of the St. Petersburg Orphanage, which was opened in St. Petersburg in 1797 by order of Emperor Paul I.

The foster home was intended for orphans, and provided them not only with housing and food, but also with the opportunity to learn any profession. Women were also taught, there were classes of governesses, teachers of music and physical education. In 1737, all classrooms were organized into a single Orphan Institute, which later received the name of Nikolaevsky. Another institute was created especially for girls - Aleksandrovsky, where professional teachers were trained primary schools, educators and even milliners.

In 1903, the commercial pedagogical courses of the Orphanage were transformed into the Women's Pedagogical Institute, which became the first in Russian Empire institution of higher learning that only admits women. Teachers of various disciplines were trained here for subsequent work in the country's gymnasiums.

A year after the October Revolution, by order of the People's Commissariat of Education, in addition to the two already existing in Petrograd, the Third Pedagogical Institute was founded, which in 1920 received the name of A.I. Herzen. Every year, thousands of young professionals left the walls of the institute, who were sent to work in new schools opened by the Soviet authorities. In 1923, after the merger of the 1st and 3rd Pedagogical Institutes, a single Leningrad State Pedagogical Institute named after A.I. Herzen appeared.

The work of this supreme educational institution did not stop during the Great Patriotic War. From besieged Leningrad, he was evacuated to the Ural town of Kyshtym, where he continued his scientific and educational activities.

After the war, the Leningrad Pedagogical Institute became the largest university in the country, which trains teachers of various profiles.

The institute's official coat of arms is a figure of a pelican depicted on a turquoise background, feeding three chicks. It is a symbol of love and self-sacrifice for the sake of children. The same emblem was the symbol of the Orphanage, the successor of which is considered to be the Pedagogical Institute named after A.I. Herzen. The motif of a pelican with chicks can often be found in the architectural decoration of institute buildings.

On January 21, 1991, the university was certified for the title of university and since that time it has been officially called the Russian State Pedagogical University named after A.I. Herzen. This event once again emphasized the authority of the educational institution and consolidated its leading role in raising the level of education in Russia.

Today, RGPU them. A.I. Herzen is the largest university in our country, it includes more than 100 departments, united in 20 large faculties, as well as separate institutes for advanced training of teachers and pre-university training. In addition, the structure of the institute includes several international training centers, the Institute of Natural Science and many other structural units engaged in teaching or scientific activities.

Currently, the university employs about 2,000 teachers, many of whom are prominent figures in Russian science. Within the walls of the university, not only doctors and candidates of sciences teach, but also corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences and other international Academies, as well as prominent cultural figures.

Since 1993, the university began participating in an experiment to introduce a multi-level education system. Today it prepares masters and bachelors in more than 30 specialties. Some faculties, for example, such as the philosophy of man, life safety and the peoples of the Far North, have no analogues in the country. The opening of the UNESCO Chair was another event that singled out the university from the total number of pedagogical universities in the country. This department is also the only one in Russia.

The high international prestige of the university can once again be confirmed by the fact that it annually accepts more than 500 foreigners as its students.

Among the famous graduates of the university are the writer N. Zabolotsky, composers A. Morozov and V. Reznikov, famous figure skaters L. Belousova, O. Protopopov and multiple Olympic champion L. Egorova.

The university conducts extensive scientific work. There are more than 30 scientific schools involved in fundamental and applied research, including those carried out within the framework of large federal programs.
