Do-it-yourself car seat bench. How old cars turn into beautiful furniture

If you like original things and furniture in particular, you should definitely pay attention to this master class. Here we talked in detail about how to make a sofa from a car body with our own hands. Yes, you heard right! We propose to make a sofa from a car body part. Moreover, we require that you use some old car from the 50s and 60s. By the way, if you live in an apartment, you can leave the parts necessary to create a sofa in the warehouse. We mean a safekeeping warehouse, a good way, besides, this service cannot be called expensive.

You will need

To make a sofa, you need to prepare the following:

✔ two front fenders from a passenger car;
✔ bumper;
✔ rear seat of the car;
✔ bars, boards;
✔ screws;
construction tape.

Note that in addition, you will need to prepare the headlights, grille and registration number if possible. And yet, if the wings are rusty or scratched, you need to paint them, that is, in addition to everything mentioned above, you will also need paint in the process.

How to make a sofa yourself

First of all, start preparing everything that will be used to create the sofa. As we have already said, if the wings have scratches and, in general, if they need improvement, they need to be painted. The seat, of course, should have a normal appearance, the same applies to the grille, bumper, and indeed everything else.

Next, the construction of the sofa frame, for this you need lumber. In principle, there is absolutely nothing complicated here. All you have to do is assemble a rectangular frame, something like a box frame. Of course, the dimensions of this frame must correspond to the dimensions of the parts with which it will subsequently be closed.

Then you need to install the seat. First, fix its lower part, then start fixing the upper part, that is, the back. Note that the fixation must be rigid, this is of great importance. Next you need to install the wings. Install them on the sides. Well, then, then the installation of the bumper, grille and other parts.

Note that to create such a sofa, you can use body parts from many cars. You can use parts from some old car or parts from a new car, it all depends on your desire and capabilities.

In the garage, there was a need to sit on something, there was no desire to sit on a wooden stool and drink tea and rest, I wanted soft and cozy for my fifth point. I decided to make a sofa in the garage from car seats. On auto-parsing for a small fee was bought back sofa from some foreign car.

The dimensions of the sofa are 120cm long, 50cm wide and 60cm high. Since the soft seat needed a base on which it would stand or lie, I decided to weld a metal box. It is also a chest for storing valuable tools in the garage, which is locked with a key using padlock(but here you could give free rein to your imagination and make an internal castle). The dimensions of my box were 80 cm long, 50 cm wide, and 40 cm high. The angle of inclination of the back of the sofa was made by eye, approximately like in cars for rear passengers, I got 25 degrees. For the backrest, a frame was welded from a 25mm corner and a similar frame was welded for the seat. After that, both of these frames were welded together, it is best to cook with a semi-automatic device, the likelihood that the seat will light up will be less than arc welding. The frame of the seat around the perimeter should be 1-2 cm larger than the perimeter of the box (chest) in order to be able to close it like a lid. The lid, which is also the frame for the seat, was welded to the box using hinged hinges from the old interior door. For more beauty, I painted the base 2 times, first red, it was pale, and then dark blue.

The very shape of the drawer is designed at an angle so that it feels like sitting in a car.

Real car lovers are able not only to improve the driving performance and tuning of their favorite iron horse, but also to find useful application after active use. An example are furnishings: beds, tables, armchairs, sofas, shelves, and even mini-offices. Such products will make the interior bright, stylish, give it a real masculine character. For example, sofas made from a car will fit perfectly into a modern living room, a teenager's room, an original car cafe, etc.

What can it be made from? Side fenders, bumper will serve as an original furniture frame. In place of the trunk or hood, a small sofa is most often placed. Some craftsmen decorate the frame with working headlights, which turns the product into a real decoration of the room.

As a rule, the entire structure is attached to a specially made metal base. And by installing furniture roller wheels designed for a product with a large weight, you can make your design sofa mobile.

Steps to turn an old car into a new sofa

Making a sofa out of a car is easy. The main thing is to divide the process into several stages:

  1. Assess the quality of the source material from which you will design the sofa. You will need the front or rear of the car preferably in good condition.
  2. Then you need to prepare the base of the structure (metal or wooden frame), fasteners, car paint, materials for the sofa itself or preserved car seats and new material to change upholstery. From the tools, prepare a grinder, a set of auto mechanics, a spray gun for applying paint.
  3. Cut off the front or back of the old car with a grinder. Release it from mechanical filling.
  4. Based on the parts used, prepare a metal or wooden frame for the sofa.
  5. Adjust the shape of the used auto parts so that they fit snugly on the frame.
  6. Apply a special automotive putty to the parts of the car to even out the deformed places. After the final drying, carefully sand everything. Cover the details with paint.
  7. Clean and update as much as possible all the elements that will decorate the sofa.
  8. Modify a used car seat or build a new sofa.
  9. Cover it with prepared material. You can use leather, artificial leather, special material with the addition of synthetic threads.
  10. Think over and prepare an original sofa lighting system (headlights, along the bottom or along the perimeter of the product).
  11. Assemble the metal parts on the frame. Install a soft seat, backrest, sofa railing.
  12. Take care of the stability of the furniture. If necessary, add additional legs.

Sofa from the old "Moskvich"

The idea to make a cozy retro sofa out of an old car came about after examining and evaluating the few details that survived from the Moskvich. This:

  • wings;
  • bumper;
  • lattice;
  • an old sofa from the salon.

You will also need:

  • metal rods for the frame;
  • fasteners (screws with screws);
  • pieces of plywood or chipboard for the side panels of the sofa;
  • foam sheet;
  • technical fabric;
  • decorative fabric;
  • needles, threads, sewing machine;
  • Bulgarian;
  • drill;
  • automotive putty;
  • grinding machine with nozzles;
  • spray;
  • paint of two colors;
  • 4 metal legs.

Try put it together source materials to see where to go next.

  1. First of all, according to the measurements of the available parts, we will build metal carcass. Then you need to try on how to place the details of the future sofa on it. This will help adjust their parameters, slightly change the shape.
  2. Let's move on to the seat. Free old chairs from damaged layers of upholstery. Adjust the springs a little. Attach a layer of new foam rubber (2-3 cm thick). Cover with technical fabric. Take measurements and sew a new sofa cover.
  3. In order for the cover to keep its shape well, and the decorative inserts do not move, when making it, it is necessary to attach the ties to the wrong side at the fold points and at the ends of the trim seams. Putting the cover on the frame, fix its position by stretching them through and tying with reverse side springs to the frame.
  4. Level the surface of the wings with putty. Sand the product so that its surface becomes even. Apply primer. Paint the wings with the prepared color. It is better to use a combination of colors as close as possible to the original.

To ensure that the product lays down in an even layer, be sure to use a sprayer. Using film and masking tape, cover the already painted part of the wings, then apply the companion color.

Cars, motorcycles, airplanes are not only transport, but also raw materials from which you can make car furniture, practical and very unusual in appearance. One of the most famous creators of such structures is Jake Chop. He has been producing car furniture since the early 60s of the XX century. Each of his products is an example of how you can create a real interior decoration from scrap metal.

Vehicle owners who do not want to part with their cars, motorcycles, and other vehicles that have already failed (due to an accident or old age), can give them a second life, using them as a decor element. So the company Mini Desk, founded by Glynn Jenkins, is officially engaged in the production of office tables from whole Morris Mini 1967, which made it famous.

Designers and craftsmen involved in the production of auto furniture offer everyone finished goods from cars, and also carry out work on special projects. The customer can even agree on the design in the machine style of an entire room (usually non-residential): a restaurant, bar, cafe, shopping center, car service, tuning studio or car dealership. Within Russia, several furniture workshops also operate in this area, and many of these products are adorned with the autograph of the master.

What can be made from car parts

There are infinitely many options for using cars (in whole or in parts) indoors, which is associated with a variety of styles, an abundance of sizes and shapes of the parts used. For example, they can be converted into furniture such as:

  • sconce or floor lamp (shock absorbers are often used for this, or brake discs from motorcycles);
  • coffee or coffee table(in this case, you can use a car radiator);
  • shelf;
  • flower pot;
  • office or billiard table;
  • bedside table;
  • armchair;
  • sofa;
  • individual office space (this requires a large car);
  • small caravan playroom for children or even real housing).

Car seats are more suitable for creating seating, and a polished engine often becomes the basis for a table. Bed machines for children have long ceased to be a novelty in the furniture market. It is quite possible to create a similar model for adults in the presence of idle vehicles. From the hood of the car can be organized cozy sofa and use the headlights as a lighting fixture. However, few people limit themselves to the most obvious options when creating designer furniture.

In some cases, such objects do not carry any functional load, but are used indoors only as a wall or floor decoration.

In addition to real furniture for cars, spare parts and whole cars in various designs their imitations can be used. In this case, we are not talking about the nostalgia of the former owner, but about the desire to convey the idea of speed, the transience of what is happening, or simply about trying to make the room more original. The materials used to create such car furniture are completely different: wood, metal, plastic. There are even models completely assembled from the LEGO constructor.

What styles are suitable for

Since car parts do not always differ in small sizes, such car furniture fits better into rooms with an open layout, a minimum number of partitions, panoramic windows, complex-organized system of artificial lighting.

To create such furniture, a transport that has failed is used, but such designs look quite modern. Outdated cars can be used in several different styles at once, where a significant part of the attention is paid to the texture and other features of the objects used:

  • the loft style is the brainchild of the empty New York brick factories of the 40s, which the poor bohemians of those times transformed into living quarters to the best of their ability. Now a similar design is used when finishing ordinary apartments furnished with auto furniture. To give the room the desired look, cement, brick, wood, metal and materials imitating them are most often used;
  • hi-tech (high technology) - this architectural trend was formed back in the 70s of the last century and at that time was considered as ultra-modern, although real popularity and recognition came to it only in the next decade. This was reflected not in the external appearance of cities, but only in the internal appearance of apartments and offices, where emphasis was placed on pastel colors, as well as monumentality, combined with complex shapes. To create an image of technological housing, elements made of glass, plastic and stainless steel were used. This allowed auto furniture to become ideal option when decorating rooms in high-tech style;
  • steampunk (steampunk) - initially, steampunk was only a literary science fiction trend, inspired by the ideas of steam power and applied art of the 19th century. Later he showed himself in architecture. Its main feature is the stylization of England of the Victorian era: an abundance of levers, fans, gears, parts of steam mechanisms, engines. Therefore, car furniture is perfect solution for rooms that need to be decorated in a steampunk style. To finish such an interior, copper, leather, wood polished to a shine are used. Whole appearance the premises should speak of a complete rejection of industrial design, but furniture for cars would be appropriate here.

Although these styles most reveal the character of car furniture, this does not mean that it is inappropriate to use it elsewhere.

How to fit into the interior

Regardless of the chosen style, such furniture is sure to attract attention. Therefore, it is more convenient to immediately make such a furniture structure the center of the interior. The easiest way to achieve the desired effect is to highlight the product using lighting (natural or artificial). You will also have to take into account the compatibility of car furniture with the surrounding space in terms of color, texture and style.

Perhaps it will be one large object, or there may be many small elements. In any case, the automotive atmosphere is preserved thanks to the details (this applies mainly to rear-view mirrors, headlights and other recognizable elements). Without them, some objects are difficult to recognize as car furniture. If you take into account these simple moments, then car furniture can easily fit into almost any interior.
