Plumbing pipe clamp: now you can do it yourself. Wire clamp as the easiest way to connect hoses How to make a hose clamp with your own hands

Have you ever needed a clamp, but you don’t have it at hand, if so, then this article will help you solve this problem very quickly.

I suggest that you make a very simple device for tightening wire clamps with your own hands, which will allow you to replace purchased clamps with homemade wire clamps.

Materials for manufacturing

For the manufacture of the device we need
  • steel strip 200 mm long, 25-30 mm wide, and 2.5 mm thick;
  • steel bar 10 mm thick;
  • pieces of sheet iron 6-10 mm thick;
  • any handle material of your choice.

Manufacturing process

We make the clamp base of such dimensions 200 mm x 30 mm x 2.5 mm by cutting out a steel strip or a piece of sheet iron, as shown in the photo below. We will also need two pieces of iron measuring 40 mm x 30 mm x 8 mm, which we will weld to the base for thickening. The collar can be made from a steel bar 10 mm thick by welding it in a T-shape, or made from an automobile stabilizer strut with a rod thickness of 10 mm.

Now we weld pieces of metal to the base and drill with a 10 mm drill.

For the convenience of using the tool, we make a handle from wood or another material that you like best (plastic, textolite, plexiglass).

In the stock, we make a cut with a width of 2.5 mm with a grinder, under the diameter of the wire we are going to use.

Now our clamp is ready for use, and its length after final processing turned out to be 180 mm.

We make the clamp itself from steel wire 2-2.5 mm thick, bending it as shown in the photo.
Next, we insert the wire into the slot of the collar on both sides and by scrolling the collar we tighten the clamp, after which we bend the clamp handle away from ourselves, thus fixing the clamp.

We bite off the excess wire, and bend the ends with a hammer.

Thanks to such a tricky device, you can make clamps of any diameter. Of course, such clamps are one-time use, but they come out strong and durable, and their cost is really a penny, even if you have to buy several meters of the necessary wire.

How to make a temporary pipe clamp?

Oleg, Yekaterinburg asks a question:

Help, please, to solve such problem. At the cottage, the water riser began to leak. Overhaul with the replacement of pipes is planned for the spring. You need to fix the leak somehow. Need detailed instructions how to make a pipe clamp. I would be very grateful for good advice.

The expert answers:

Various breaks in pipes have been repaired with clamps for a very long time. The technology of such work is tested, simple and reliable. To do this, you will need the following materials:

  • a piece of tin;
  • a piece of rubber;
  • bolts;
  • nuts;
  • washers.

The clamp consists of a metal crimp - a bandage, as well as an internal rubber seal- cuffs. Absolutely any tin will do, but better try to pick up galvanized. Such a bandage will be more resistant to corrosion. The thickness should not be less than 0.5 mm. The cuff can be cut from an old boot, a piece of an automobile or bicycle inner tube, or a thick mitten. Any rubber will do. The number of bolts depends on the clamp width. If narrow, then one is enough. For a wide one, you will need 2 or 3. Diameter from 6 to 10 mm. Nuts and washers are selected according to them.

First prepare your tools:

  1. Hammer.
  2. Pliers. A vice will do too.
  3. Calipers. Can be replaced with a piece of some kind of lace.
  4. Scissors for cutting metal. A jigsaw or a grinder will do.
  5. Hand or electric drill.
  6. Drills for the size of the bolts.
  7. Wrenches.
  8. Sandpaper.

Clamp installation

Measure the diameter of the pipe with a caliper. So you will know how long to cut a strip of tin. To do this, multiply the number "pi" by the value of the diameter. The result is the circumference of the circle. Those who do not like geometry or do not have a caliper can use a cord or something similar.

Cover your pipe with this cord and make marks on it, for example, with a felt-tip pen or chalk. By measuring the distance between the marks, get the same circumference. Add 3-4 cm for the "ears". The width depends on the damage on the pipe. The rubber patch is also cut out.

Only its size should be without "ears". Tapping with a hammer, bend around the pipe with a cut strip, and bend the “ears” at a right angle with pliers. Putting them together, drill a hole for the existing bolt. If the width is more than 4 cm, then drill 2 holes, or even 3. Clean the place under the clamp with sandpaper.

Apply the middle of the cuff to the place of leakage, put a bandage on top of it and tighten it with a bolt and nut. Now you have detailed instructions on how to make pipe clamps yourself. Such clamps are very reliable and durable, and can serve no less than the pipe itself.. So your temporary repair may well become permanent.

At the first signs of pipeline depressurization, it is necessary to quickly find the damaged area and eliminate the identified defect.

When performing emergency emergency work, you can use homemade clamps to stop the flow in the pipeline for a while. Ready-made clamps for fastening pipes, manufactured at the factory from stainless steel or fire-resistant plastic, are used when performing installation work on the installation of heating, sewerage, water supply, gas supply systems. These fasteners allow you to securely fix the position of pipes running along horizontal and vertical surfaces (ceilings, walls), as well as installed on special racks.

In this video, an experienced craftsman shows how to make a wire clamp:

The design of the simplest clamp

Without exception, all pipe clamps consist of a bandage - a crimping material made by manufacturers of steel, and an internal seal called a cuff. As a sealing material that seals the damaged area, they usually take special corrugated rubber, which helps prevent pipe deformation when the fixing screws are tightened. The presence of a rubber gasket in the design of the product also helps to reduce vibration and noise.

When choosing clamps, pay attention to such product characteristics as:

    inner diameter; bandage width; steel strip thickness.

The tightening range of the clamp varies depending on the size of the fastener element. The main indicators that determine the scope of its application are the strength of the connection and the level of permissible load.

Metal clamps for fastening and repairing pipes of different diameters consist of a steel frame and a seal made of corrugated rubber

Making a collar from improvised materials

Find a strip of galvanized sheet, the thickness of which does not exceed one millimeter, and a piece of three-millimeter rubber. Look in your stock for a couple of bolts (M6, M8 or M10), as well as suitable nuts and washers. Of the tools useful:

    hammer; caliper; wrenches; vice or pliers; scissors for metal, which can be replaced if available with a jigsaw or grinder equipped with appropriate cutting elements; drill and drill bits (M7, M9 or M10, M12).

Use a caliper to determine the pipe diameter. If the diameter of the pipe is large, then take the necessary measurements using a corner and a ruler.

Next, cut the tin frame of the clamp in the form of a strip, the width of which should be 4-8 cm, and the length will have to be calculated. To do this, the circumference of the pipe is determined by multiplying its diameter by 3.14 (the Pi number, familiar to everyone from the school geometry course). 3-4 cm are added to the result obtained, from which “ears” are subsequently made with drilled holes for fixing bolts.

The size of the holes in the "ears" depends on the diameter of the bolts, and if the washers are wide, then you can add an extra 2-3 mm to simplify the mounting of the clamp in the future. If the width of the bandage exceeds 6 cm, then it is recommended to drill holes not for two bolts, but for three.

Mark a line with a marker along which to bend the “ears” at a right angle to the tin strip. This operation can be done manually if the strip is thin. With thicker material, work with a vice or pliers.

Next, the tin is bent around the pipe on which it is planned to put the clamp on, and they try to connect the ears so that the holes drilled in them coincide. If the tin does not bend well, then the strip is tapped with a hammer. A pre-cut rubber gasket, cut out taking into account the width of the bandage, is inserted into the collar.

Algorithm for installing a clamp on a pipe

Before installing the clamp, the ears are bred to the sides so that they can safely wrap around the pipe.

In this case, the rubber gasket should cover the pipe defect well. If everything was measured correctly, then no more than three centimeters should remain between the ears. This distance will certainly decrease in the process of tightening the clamp with bolts, and this process continues until it is possible to press the rubber seal against the pipe as tightly as possible.

A clamp to fix a leak in a pipe of a plumbing or heating system at home is installed at the site of damage with your own hands within a few minutes

Installation of clamps in most cases is done on a leaking pipe. Shutting off the supply of water, coolant or wastewater is not performed.

Therefore, the effectiveness of the repair will be immediately visible. After wiping the pipe and bandage dry, wait five minutes and make sure that the leak has been fixed. Too long bolts, if necessary, are easily cut with a grinder or a hacksaw.

A properly installed collar can serve for several years, protecting the object from flooding. However, breaks in water supply and heating systems are desirable to weld or replace defective sections with new pipes.

Insertion into the main water supply

When connecting the water supply of a private house to central system water supply, a mortise pipe clamp is used, which allows you to carry out work under pressure in a short time with the help of specialized professional equipment.

A clamp is installed for tapping into a pipe without pressure by a simple locksmith using a cutter and a pair wrenches. It is not intended to use welding machine. In any case, these works are carried out by employees of the services serving the main water supply in the settlement, if the client has all the permits.

Stages of installing a mortise pipe clamp in the main pipeline. Clamps for tapping into a pipe simplify the work of connecting an object to central water supply systems

Now you know how to make and put a clamp on a water pipe. If the pipeline is damaged, you will be able to fix the problem yourself at least for a while before the arrival of professional plumbers.

The correct functioning of heating and water supply systems is one of the priorities that every homeowner needs to ensure.

In the case of laying new communication lines and high-quality work, this issue may not worry for a long time. However, time is inexorable, and sooner or later, under the influence of external factors or the influence of water, the pipes will begin to flow. In this regard, let's find out how to put a clamp on the pipe. The technology of carrying out the mentioned works will be discussed further.

Definition and use cases

Before proceeding to a direct consideration of the issue of mounting a clamp on a pipe, it is necessary to understand what this auxiliary element of plumbing is.

A clamp is usually called a special device designed to seal holes in pipes and eliminate leaks. Clamps can also be additionally equipped at the junction of pipeline segments for additional sealing. As for applications, it can be noted: The appearance of fistulas in the pipe wall. This can occur as a result of corrosion on the walls. The appearance of cracks in the pipes. They occur both in violation of the installation rules and as a result of manufacturing defects. The appearance of fractures on the pipes.

This can be observed if the pipe installation technology is violated. The occurrence of a leak at the junction. It can occur as a result of improper installation or natural wear of the seal. As for the device of the element, the clamp consists of two metal half rings connected to each other by bolts and nuts. A rubber seal is usually attached along the inner radius of the clamp, having a width slightly larger than the metal part.

Mounting process

As for the process of installing a clamp, for example, on a heating pipe, everything is quite simple here. For maximum efficiency, it is better to carry out actions in stages: First, it is necessary to block the flow of water (in this case acting as a coolant) into the pipe. Next, the installation site of the clamp must be cleaned and leveled for maximum sealing in the future.

For these purposes, sandpaper is suitable, which needs to remove the top layer of paint. Thus, not only the surface is leveled, but the location of the damage will become more clearly visible. After that, a clamp is installed. To do this, the fastening on one side is untwisted, and the half-rings are slightly parted in different directions so that the element can be put on the pipe. In this case, the rubber seal should be positioned so that the place of the leak is located in the middle of the rubber part. Next, the fasteners of the clamp are inserted into the eye holes, and the element is pulled together with the keys.

If all stages of work were carried out correctly, then the leak will be eliminated. This will be most noticeable if the water was not shut off. In addition, it should be added that for additional sealing of the junction, the inner surface of the rubber seal of the clamp can be processed silicone sealant, which after polymerization will give almost complete confidence in the density of the connection.

Clamp manufacturing

If for some reason it is impossible to purchase a clamp in a specialized store, the issue can be resolved by self-manufacturing the element.

To do this, do the following: It is necessary to take a strip of galvanized sheet of the required width and a thickness of about 1 mm. Using a flexible tape measure, the circumference of the pipe is measured and 3-4 cm are added to this indicator on each side of the strip necessary for the manufacture of lugs for fastening. The strip obtained earlier, the length is cut off from the sheet and divided into two parts (you can make a single collar from one strip). The blanks are bent to the required shape. The work can be carried out both directly on the spot, and using a pipe segment of the same diameter as a mock-up. On each side of the resulting half-rings, the ears necessary for fastening are bent with the help of pliers. Holes are drilled in them. As a sealant, you can use simple rubber with a thickness of 3 mm or more. The resulting clamp and sealant are mounted in place in the same way as the factory version. quality workmanship and installation will differ little from the factory counterpart, and therefore can be successfully used for installation, for example, on a water pipe. Sometimes a kind of clamp can be used to seal the connection of pipes used in gardening.

For example, the use of irrigation systems of varying complexity is impossible without a tight connection of elements. Such clamps are generally similar in design to the details mentioned above, but lack a sealing element. Regarding how much a water clamp costs, it should be said that the price can vary quite a lot depending on the complexity of the design, the material of manufacture, the manufacturer, and many other factors. As you can see from the foregoing, installing a clamp on a water pipe is too complicated a task for independent implementation. It is important to understand that this is a temporary measure, which is not a panacea, but it is quite suitable as a measure to quickly solve the problem.

Clamp for sewer pipe

Although in sewer pipes the liquid pressure is much less, but the resulting leakage can also cause a lot of trouble. In this case, you can purchase and install clamps for sewer pipes.

For thin-walled plastic sewer pipes, it is better not to use homemade clamps, as they do not have correct form and, instead of solving the issue of elimination, leaks will bring even greater problems, in the form of a crack or complete failure of the pipeline.

People who, at least occasionally, are engaged in repair and installation work know that a clamp may be needed at the most unexpected moment. This is the first device that comes to mind when you need to quickly fix a pipe leak. Indeed, the imposition of a clamp is a temporary measure, but sometimes necessary. It is possible that, due to circumstances, it cannot be bought right now, moreover, even a simple wire clamp is suitable to solve the problem. Therefore, you need to do it yourself.

Design features of the product

A clamp is a simple and effective device that has a lot of typical variations, but, in fact, they all have similar design characteristics. The difference is presented in the form of forms, fasteners. Their use is most common in the field of installation and repair of pipeline systems, this causes another characteristic feature of the design. For better fixation and tightness, the product often has a rubber gasket.

Regarding the practical benefits of the products in question, we can say that without them it is almost impossible to carry out high-quality fixation of the pipeline, both horizontal and vertical.

The line of types of this device begins with the simplest one-sided products, which are a threaded stud. Further, it continues with variations that differ not only in the greater complexity of the design, but also in size (this should be understood as the maximum diameter of the pipe for which this or that product can be used) and intended purpose.

Clamps

The most common problems that clamps help to solve:

  • Repairing cracks in piping systems. Depending on the type of product, even fairly large damage can be covered.
  • A broken tube is an uncommon but serious problem. For the most part, it is faced by those who professionally install and repair pipelines.
  • Also, if it is necessary to eliminate the "fistulas" of water pipes, clamps are again widely used. In such a situation, it is necessary to use a soft substrate.

Note! If the pipe being repaired serves as a means of transporting aggressive liquids, then a type of fastener must be used that is able to withstand such specific operating conditions.

  • Specifically for steel pipes, the product can help reduce the risk of leakage due to corrosion. It is not uncommon for situations to arise that it damages the metal so much that a leak can occur at any moment.

The market is saturated with all kinds of clamp configurations different manufacturers. Factory production, in addition to professional manufacturing It also guarantees quality. After all, products are manufactured in accordance with GOST. Such government regulation of quality is associated with a high degree of the role of clamps in maintaining the integrity of the structures in which they are used. Based on this, the question arises whether it is worth making a collar on steel pipe with your own hands.

The question arises

Is it worth it to make clamps with your own hands, and what mistakes can be made

The clamp is at first glance the simplest device that does not differ in any characteristics that are difficult to understand. The presence of the risk associated with the manufacture of homemade clamps depends on how confident a person is in his abilities, and whether the clamp can be used in given conditions.

For example, a fairly rusted heating pipe leaked. The area of corrosion in the damaged area has a fairly wide area. If the clamp is made incorrectly, not corresponding to the required size, then after trying to install it, the situation can only get worse.

Rust streaks from under the collar

Based on this, of course, it is better to always have on hand clamps of various modifications and sizes of factory production, or if problems arise with the pipeline, immediately contact the repair service. Unfortunately, neither the first nor the second options are often feasible. No one plans a leak, the time of its occurrence is not regulated, and it is not possible to have clamps of all configurations available.

If a leak occurs, immediate action must be taken. And it is for this purpose that you can make a clamp with your own hands, which will give time to solve the problem in full.

The simplest clamp

In the absence of specialized tools and materials, such as grinders, drills, sheet metal and the like, you can resort to the simplest, but for a while problem solver option - make a clamp from a piece of wire. It will help to eliminate the leak as quickly as possible and calmly wait for the help of specialists:

pipe leak
  • The first thing to do is find some duct tape or duct tape, a piece of soft enough to bend but strong wire, and a piece of rubber (like a tourniquet).
  • Next, you should put a piece of rubber on the pipe in the place where the leak occurred, after which it is pressed down as tightly as possible by the wire by winding it.

Important! When winding with wire, special attention should be paid to the edges of the future clamp.

  • The resulting patch, for greater reliability, is tightly wrapped with adhesive tape (adhesive tape or electrical tape).

Such a product, made by hand, will not require a lot of time and at the same time help to avoid possible big problems.

Semi-professional option

The previously described example of the manufacture of a wire collar is "urgent". But if the manufacture of the product does not require much haste, and there is a tool available, then you can independently build a fairly good version of the product. This one can last for years.

Required tool

First, you need to understand what tool you need:

  • Hammer or light sledgehammer;
  • Drill and drill (Ø 6 - 8 mm);
  • Bulgarian or special scissors for cutting metal;
  • Measuring instruments - ruler, caliper;
  • Wrenches, pliers.

materials

To make a clamp that can withstand significant loads, you will need:

  • A metal plate of moderate thickness, preferably up to 1 mm. You should not use steel of greater thickness, since it will not only be problematic to bend, but it will not allow you to make a sufficiently tight connection;
  • Rubber strip, its thickness should be about 3 mm;
  • Bolts, nuts (Ø 6 - 8 mm). It is desirable to have washers for them.

Manufacturing algorithm

To successfully make a collar with your own hands, you will not need special abilities in this matter, but some elementary skills are still needed. According to the advice of experienced plumbers, the work should take place in the following sequence:

  • The process begins with measuring the damaged area, then a steel plate of the appropriate size is cut. In the dimensions of the plate, it is necessary to take into account not only the length of the damaged section of the pipe, but also its circumference (after obtaining the size, add 5 cm to it).

pipe measurement
  • On both sides of the workpiece, with the help of pliers, the “ears” of the future fastener are bent (in the end, they should be perpendicular to the main part of the metal strip).
  • In the "ears" you need to drill holes for the mounting bolt.

Homemade clamp
  • Next, a strip of rubber is cut, the width of which should be less than the circumference of the damaged pipe.

Should be taken into account! If the clamp being made is small (no more than 6 cm), then the “ears” can be with one hole in the center for the mounting bolt. If it is larger, then it is preferable to make them more than 2-3.

Installation

After the product is almost ready, you can proceed to its installation, which will be the completion of the work.

  • A metal plate with moderate pressure bends around a pipe having a diameter similar to that which has integrity damage. Ultimately, the ears should match.
  • Attention! If the bend is uneven, then problems may arise with the installation of the mounting bolt.
  • A pre-prepared piece of rubber is applied to the leak site, after which a steel plate is installed on top of it. Before proceeding with the installation metal element, it needs to be slightly straightened. This is done in order to simplify the installation process on the pipe.
  • And so, if everything was done correctly, then between the "ears" there will be a distance of a couple of centimeters, and they can be pulled together with a bolt. When sufficient product pressure is reached on the pipe, the flow will stop.

Or to eliminate pipeline defects, clamps are used to secure pipes. They are made of steel or plastic. Plastic ones are not subject to corrosion, but their installation step increases. They are not used for repair activities, since they do not provide a waterproofing layer. Metal clamps have a high degree of reliability and are able to absorb vibrations of the entire pipe system, so they are the most widely used.

Pipe clamps - the first helpers for leaking pipes

The simplest clamp design

The main element of the product is a crimp bandage, which has a steel outer surface. Inner part in most cases it is made of corrugated rubber, which acts as a seal and provides excellent sealing. It is used as a material for production.

The steel collar during work is used in two types:

  • double C-shaped;
  • single O-shaped.

The first is two identical halves, fastened on both sides. In the second case, the design provides for one eye for fastening, into the hole of which a bolt is inserted. The diameter of the fastener is taken equal to 8 or 10 millimeters. Both types of clamp are equally convenient for work.

Depending on the pitch of the fasteners and the diameter of the pipeline, the diameter of the product is selected according to the internal measurement, the width of the steel strip and its thickness. Steel clamps for fastening pipes are usually installed in increments of 1.6-1.8 m for the horizontal direction of the pipes and 2.4-2.6 m for the vertical direction.

Steel clamps are made of a steel frame with a corrugated rubber seal

Independent production of a product from available materials

Before starting work, you will need to prepare everything necessary tools and measure the diameter of the pipes if it is unknown. Measurements are taken with a vernier caliper or several rulers. The first option will allow you to get a value with a smaller error.

Next, you need to calculate the length of the metal strip, which is necessary to make a plumbing pipe clamp. To do this, use the formula l \u003d π * D + 4 cm, where l is the length of the strip, D is the measured diameter, and π \u003d 3.14. A margin of 4 cm is provided for the manufacture of lugs for fasteners.

To make a pipe clamp, you will need the following tools:

  1. bolts M8 or M10 and corresponding nuts and washers;
  2. spanners;
  3. shears for working with metal or other cutting mechanisms designed to work with steel;
  4. pliers and hammer;
  5. drill.

As a material for the bandage, a strip with a galvanized surface is used. Its width should be from 4 to 8 cm, and a thickness of 1 mm. Thicker material will be very difficult to work with. As a sealant, it is necessary to prepare a piece of rubber right size 3 mm thick.

On metal blanks, it is necessary to mark the location of the ears and bend them at a right angle. This operation is performed manually or with pliers. Holes for bolted connections are drilled with a drill. The size depends on the diameter of the fastener.

The metal strip is given the necessary shape. If necessary, leveling tap the surface with a hammer. After checking the coincidence of the holes in the ears in. The product is ready for fixing on metal pipes.

To pull off a small collar, it is enough to provide one bolt. With a clamp strip width of up to 6 cm, you will need to use two fasteners. With a bandage width of 6 to 8 cm, it is recommended to install three bolts.

Scheme of using a mortise clamp in the central water supply system

Instructions for fixing the clamp on the pipe

To install a repair metal pipe clamp yourself, you must follow the following procedure:

  • before starting the installation, the clamp on the pipe is unbent;
  • installation of the product on the pipe with a small pushing force;
  • bolts are threaded into the holes of the ears;
  • by tightening the nuts, the ears are pulled together until they fit snugly against the pipe.

Self-manufacturing and installing such a fixture for pipelines is just a temporary measure to eliminate leaks. The metal has already begun to break down under the influence of corrosion, so serious repairs will soon be required by welding or a complete replacement of damaged pipes.

After installation, it is necessary to check the reliability of sealing. To do this, wipe the pipe dry and wait 5 minutes or a little more. After this time, visual and tactile control of the pipe surface is carried out for the presence of moisture.

Fasteners for hot water pipes or heating systems must be made of materials that do not prevent the thermal expansion of the pipeline.

Connection to the main pipeline

To connect private house for a centralized water supply system, you need to obtain permits that are required by the organization responsible for the networks in the area. After that, the work is carried out by professional workers of the public service. The mechanic performs work without lowering the pressure in the system and using a welding machine.

Insertion occurs by piercing the pipeline through a hole in the clamp. The contact point is sealed with rubber pads and drilling takes place. Most often, clamps are used for this type of work, consisting of two parts - upper and lower. Drilling and electric welding clamps are also used, but they are not suitable for pipes of large diameters.

Tapping into the main pipeline without permission and control from the public utilities is an illegal act. Since September 1, 2014, administrative responsibility has been provided for this. As a punishment, a fine is imposed, the amount of which depends on the diameter of the pipe. When carrying out work, be sure to invite a representative of the organization responsible for the backbone networks.
