Not all blanks are equally large, therefore, in order to be able to process blanks, it is necessary to make rearranged studs, and in both boards there are additional 2 holes closer to the clamp screw.

We make a carpentry vise for a workbench with our own hands

Cut the parts with a grinder and make grooves at the ends of the corners to the size of a square profile pipe. Select suitable washers and bushings for the clamping assembly, the inside diameter of which must match the gauge of the threaded rod.

Fix the ties with clamps and weld them to one profile pipe.

Install the second guide strictly parallel to the first and weld the parts.

Attention: even if you are a non-professional welder, you will have to try and make welds that provide sufficient structural rigidity.

Treat the top plane with a grinding disc, removing all protrusions.

Insert the movable guides, align their ends and press the screed corner against them. Fix the parts by welding.

Install vertical corners and boil them.

Drill holes for the screw in the middle of the corners. When marking their location, keep in mind that the rod must lie in the screed of the moving part so that the thrust washer can rotate.

Secure the drive nut by welding. Assemble the clamping unit: first, weld the collar bushings to the stud.

Now install the movable sleeve and weld the thrust washer. To withstand the gap, insert a strip of thin tin under the corner.

Take care of the collar. If you use a half-inch pipe for it, then the nuts at the ends can be welded or fastened to the thread, followed by coring.

Make mounting holes and clean the surfaces from scale and rust.

Coat the carpentry vise with primer and paint.

Proceed to the manufacture of wooden elements of carpentry vise.

Prepare planed planks 22 mm thick from solid wood: make an allowance of 15–20 mm in length, 3–4 mm in width, and for workpieces of a movable sponge, instead of 80 mm, take 85 mm. Saw off the support bar immediately to size from pine.

Glue two blanks.

After the glue has dried, cut the parts to a length of 320 mm.

Cut the fixed jaw to a fine finish and sand its front side. Fasten wooden details on the corners with screws through the auxiliary holes.

Place the vise on the workbench, aligning the fixed jaw with the edge of the worktop. Secure with clamps and mark the drilling points.

After removing the fiberboard from the workbench cover, drill holes for the mounting bolts.

Make indentations in the countertop for the hats with a feather drill.

Fix the vise with bolts with a diameter of at least 10 mm.

Cut the movable jaw in thickness and cut a groove for the weld.

Place the sponge in a vise and mark its exact height.

Remove excess wood with a planer and set the part in place.

Apply a finishing compound to the wooden elements, lubricate the rubbing parts of the clamping unit and the running nut.

U-shaped clamp is short-lived. Most often, it functions until the swivel head begins to hang out and fall out of the movable jaw of the tool. The clamp can still be used, but it can be annoying that you have to hold on to the swivel while installing the clamp. But such a clamp may well come in handy.

I was looking for a wooden vise for my small workbench and the price surprised me. Even kits that you need to assemble yourself, wasting time and wood, can cost you hundreds of dollars. From the parts of an old clamp, I was able to construct a vise for working with wood, and using old wood, I could do it without spending a dime.

More importantly, the vise can be constructed using only hand tools with minimal resources, which means it can be assembled by anyone, no matter the size of the workshop.

Step 2: Build a vise from an old clamp

First of all, it is necessary to unscrew the movable sponge from the clamp. Without a swivel, it will easily move away. But if you are using a clamp in working condition, you may need to cut it off.

Then take a saw for metal or angle grinder with a fast spinning disc and cut the sleeve off the clamp just before turning, leaving enough body. Most clamps are molded and can be easily cut with a hacksaw. They are often cast in a 'T' or 'I' shape, so you will have to cut off some of the material, leaving room for you to drill two holes for the mounting screws. When cutting off excess material, leave a small metal wedge next to the sleeve. This will help squeeze her in. drilled hole and prevent free rotation.

Step 3: Cutting Boards and Drilling Holes

You will need a 5 x 15 cm block that will exactly match the height of your table. It will become the mounting base. Our design will be attached to the table leg. You will also need a second 5 x 15 cm block, which is about 60 cm long. We use this as a board directly for the clamp. Mount it 10 cm above your table surface. You will also need two 5x15x9 cm bars for the front of your new clamp.

Now you need to decide where you want to place the screw. I set mine 30cm from the top of the clamp board. The general idea is that the higher the screw, the more the clamp pushes, while the lower it is, the wider the range. I would recommend placing the bars together so that the clamping board is 10 cm away and drilling a small 0.5 cm hole where the screw will be located. This will indicate its future location and will make sure that the holes match.

Once you are sure the holes match up, take your mounting base and drill a hole for the coupler on the side that will be attached to the table. Now you can drill further, given the diameter of your screw. Then take the sleeve and drive it into the hole. Thanks to the wedge you left, it should fit very well. And thanks to the tongue, the coupling will be well fixed.

You will need some kind of channel for the screw to go through the clamp board. You can drill several holes one after the other (starting with the first 0.5 cm hole and work your way up) and then cut out the excess material with a hammer and chisel. The channel should be 4 cm long and wide enough to match your screw.

Now you can glue the face piece to the clip and secure them 1.27 cm above the table top and the top of the circuit board.

Step 4: Create the Hinge

Cut two blocks from the base of your clipboard, each 4cm wide and 9cm long. Drill a horizontal hole through the rest 2.5 cm from the end the size of your 15 cm bolt. This is the hinge point.

Next, you need to create and add support blocks. Cut them out to 10 cm and then drill a 15 cm hole, like your bolt, 5 cm from the top. Use a round file to lengthen the holes up to 2.5 cm. The extra free clearance in the pivot hole will help ease clamping pressure, thus preventing blocks from cracking.

Now, having cut two channels, insert the blocks into the mounting base. Use wood glue to secure them.

Finally, install the bolt, but don't screw it in tightly. The entire mechanism must move freely in the grooves of the blocks. A lock nut works well. To keep the nut from loosening, use the second nut and screw them together.

Step 5: Clamp Assembly

You will have to build a spacer for your screw. I used a hole saw and used it to cut a 5cm disc out of a 5x10cm block, then drilled a hole in the center to match the diameter of my screw. You can make as many spacers as you want, depending on the space you need for your screw handle. The ideal option will cut two such disks. The space between the two spacers can then be lubricated with a little oil, allowing you to tighten the clamp more smoothly.

You'll notice from the pictures that I started with one pad, then added a second one and found it to be much better.

Having built the clamping system, it will be necessary to attach it to the leg of the workbench. I used plain 7 cm self-tapping screws spaced 15 cm apart. I attached the structure through the base of the mount directly to the table leg. Now you can install the gaskets on the screw and secure it.

Step 6: Cutting and Drilling the Pegs

A carpentry vice in a home workshop is simply an indispensable thing for those who are engaged in manufacturing wooden structures and carving. Thanks to them, it will be much more convenient to process certain workpieces. It is best to do this, also using a special workbench.
