How to make a wooden skirting board with your own hands. Fixing skirting boards made of wood

Wood is by right a classic material for interior decoration. First of all, it is valued for its environmental friendliness and high mechanical strength. Wooden skirting boards perfectly complement the parquet floor, harmonizing with it. There are a large number of purchased wooden skirting boards. Self-manufacturing skirting will not only save money, but also opens up the possibility of choosing the optimal shape and color of the skirting board. How to do it yourself wooden plinth find out further.

Plinth floor wooden: advantages, features and characteristics

The white wooden skirting board is preferably installed in dry areas such as bedrooms, living rooms, children's rooms. They are installed on wooden or parquet floors. Among the advantages of such skirting boards are noted:

  • environmental safety;
  • naturalness;
  • attractive appearance;
  • high strength.

There are two main options for wooden skirting boards:

  • massive;
  • veneered.

The first option is more expensive. For its manufacture, valuable species of wood are used in the form of oak, beech, cherry, alder. Cheaper models are made from pine or spruce arrays. This skirting board is suitable for expensive flooring. It is characterized by a long service life, resistance to mechanical damage, laborious installation, high cost.

Veneered skirting board more cheap option. For its manufacture, pine or spruce wood is used. Valuable wood species are superimposed on the base from above. In appearance, the plinth is identical to the massive one, however, the performance characteristics are at a lower level.

Another version of the plinth made of wood is a flexible plinth. The basis for the construction of the plinth is ash, oak, beech and other hardwoods. A special wood processing technology allows obtaining elasticity properties. To store such a plinth, special packaging is required, the interaction of the plinth with air leads to its solidification in a certain form.

The price policy of wooden skirting boards is determined by the type of wood used in the process of their manufacture. The cheapest options are pine baseboards, and the most expensive are oak. The best option- larch, wood has excellent performance characteristics, almost the same as oak, however, the cost of such a plinth is not much higher than that of pine.

After installing wooden skirting boards, they must be varnished to ensure additional protection coatings from moisture, temperature changes and other factors.

In addition, there are a huge number of types of skirting boards in relation to their shape. The most popular skirting boards with a triangular cut. With the help of modern woodworking equipment, it is possible to create models of skirting boards with a variety of cutouts and patterns.

Standard skirting boards have a base height of 1-2.5 cm. The height of the skirting boards themselves is not limited and ranges from 4 to 30 cm. When choosing the size of the skirting board, it is necessary to take into account the height of the ceiling in the room. High skirting boards are suitable for rooms with high ceilings.

Working with wooden skirting boards: material for making skirting boards

The classic solution is to make a plinth from the same type of wood from which the floor is built. However, with the help of modern devices, it is possible to successfully combine several types of wood with each other.

Conifers are used to make cheap skirting boards. Most often, pine is used as the material. The soft wood massif is easy to process and cut. Due to the presence of a light texture, the plinth easily accepts any coloring composition. Spruce skirting boards are a rarity, as this material is difficult to process.

Skirting boards, for the manufacture of which larch is used, are the most popular, thanks to a successful combination of pricing policy and quality characteristics. This material resists moisture well, does not rot and is used even in the kitchen and bathroom.

Oak wooden skirting boards are elite options. They have unique strength and the highest durability. The use of bleached or artificially aged oak skirting boards allows you to give the room sophistication and solidity.

Beech has the same performance characteristics as oak, but differs from it in color. Beech plinth has a pinkish texture, which is not suitable for every interior.

If you want to get a nice brown color, we recommend making your own plinth from walnut. This type of wood has a special elasticity, suitable for the manufacture of flexible skirting boards. It is such a plinth that will allow you to decorate walls that are extraordinary in shape. The composition of the nut contains iodine, which has a beneficial effect on the atmosphere in the room, healing it.

Light olive color can be obtained from ash. This type of wood, like walnut, has high plasticity, the texture of the wood is clear and has veins.

The original coloring of mahogany makes it popular in the manufacture of skirting boards. In addition, the array is durable and lightweight. Although the cost of such wood is quite high, compared with all of the above options.

Linden is best suited for the manufacture of skirting boards for a bath, as it has good plasticity and resistance to moisture. Cherry is also very popular. However, its only advantage is the gradual change in color during operation.

Please note that when choosing a baseboard without a varnish coating, after processing it with a varnish composition, it will change color. This fact should be taken into account. If you are going to open the baseboard with a colorless varnish, then in order to find out what color the baseboard will acquire, wet it with water.

How to install wooden skirting boards indoors

Wooden skirting boards are more rigid than plastic ones, so the process of their installation has certain subtleties that must be followed. In order to make a wooden baseboard yourself, you need to have some experience with carpentry tools. In addition, it is necessary to choose the right quality material for work.

For example, the optimum moisture content of a board should be 17%. raw wood difficult to grind and mill. When choosing wood, you should also pay attention to its appearance. If there are knots, chips, deformations on the boards, then it is better to refuse to buy them.

The main type of wood processing before making a plinth is its milling. At this stage, you will need special equipment - milling machine and skills to work with it. Making wooden skirting boards with your own hands is quite expensive both in time and money. However, the only advantage of this process is obtaining an individual skirting board that will satisfy all the preferences and desires of the owner of the room.

Before attaching wooden skirting boards, it is necessary to determine the amount of material, necessary finishing for the premises. To do this, determine the length and width of the room, multiply the sum of these values by 2 and add a margin of 20-30%. The stock is needed to compensate for trimming and joining.

I start installing floor wide wooden skirting boards from the corner next to the door. Then continue moving clockwise. Please note that, unlike plastic skirting boards, plugs are not installed on wooden skirting boards that hide defects in the connection of the planks to each other. Therefore, an important role in the further aesthetics of the coating is played by high-quality docking of skirting boards. If there are perfectly even corners in the room, use a miter box to trim the skirting boards. With it, cut two planks at an angle of forty-five degrees and join them together.

If the corners in the room are uneven, then it is necessary to attach two skirting boards to the corner. Next, follow the line of their intersection, make markings on it and cut the plinth along the previously outlined line. In order to make the joints between the straight segments of the skirting boards invisible, it is necessary to cut them in compliance with a certain angle of inclination.

To fix the slats, use self-tapping screws with which clips are installed. The bar is mounted on a clip and held on it. In order to hide the holes for the screws, use wood putty, the color of which exactly matches the color of the baseboard.

The interval between the installation of clips is about 50 cm. There are several options for these fasteners, the principle of operation of which is the same. In any case, a self-tapping screw is used to fix the clip on the wall. The clip is installed on the bar, holding it.

How to make a corner on a wooden baseboard: installation of baseboards

The ideal angle in the process of joining together the wooden planks of the plinth can only be obtained when the corners in the room are at right angles. In this case, the first plank is processed on a miter box at an angle of forty-five degrees.

Next, you need to install it against the wall and attach the second bar. Make a markup according to which the skirting boards will be interconnected without the formation of cracks. If the cutting angle of the second bar is not forty-five degrees, then the angle in the room is uneven. In any case, stick to the previously made markup, according to which the cut is made.

If there is a gap between the planks, hide it with wood putty. To remove a large gap, use a grinder with a special nozzle, with which the skirting boards are adjusted. Next, attach the planks to the wall.

There are situations when the plinth is installed not only in internal, but also in external corners. In this case, the main thing is to decide on the side of the cut. First, cut the first plank, attach it in the corner and make a marking according to which the second plinth is cut. Make sure there are no gaps.

Massive profiles are fixed on the wall in two ways:

1. Self-tapping screws.

In the process of work, you will need a drill or a puncher that will help make holes for the dowels. Attach the plinth to the wall and make markings for self-tapping screws, the interval between fasteners is at least half a meter, if the walls are curved, then it should be reduced.

If the wall is made of concrete, then the diameter of the drill is six millimeters; on walls made of porous materials, it must be reduced. If the walls are made of drywall or wood, we recommend using wood screws.

Fix the plinth with self-tapping screws on the wall, in order to hide the recesses for the screws, use wood putty.

2. Use of liquid nails.

This method of mounting a wooden plinth is less laborious. However, for its implementation in the room, the walls must be perfectly aligned. Apply liquid nails to the baseboard with a special gun and fix it on the wall, holding it for several minutes.

After finishing installation work it is necessary to proceed to the puttying of skirting boards. To do this, first wipe them with a damp cloth in order to remove dust. The tone of the putty must completely match the tone of the baseboard itself. Please note that after drying, the putty will change color. Therefore, apply a little composition on the remnants of the baseboard and wait for it to dry. Putty the skirting board two or three times, making sure that the skirting boards are completely dry before starting each puttying. Next, the skirting boards are polished and wiped with a damp cloth.

The next process of processing the skirting board involves varnishing it. To do this, install masking tape on the floor and on the walls, which will prevent the varnish from getting on other surfaces. Apply one layer of varnish, wait for it to dry and repeat the process again. In the process of drying the varnish, do not allow drafts and sudden changes in the room temperature regime. Unevenly dried varnish will adversely affect the life of the skirting boards.

If you used a purchased plinth, then you need to paint it in a certain color, since most often purchased versions of wooden plinths are white. Skirting board paint should be designed to cover wooden products. It is applied in several layers. At the same time, it is recommended to apply one layer of protective varnish to the baseboard after painting, which will prevent its destruction under the influence of moisture and other destructive factors.

Wooden skirting boards, a traditional attribute of interior decoration, continue to be in fashion due to their environmental friendliness, spectacular appearance and durability. Lath decor can be made of solid wood or in combination with decorative veneer.

Skirting boards in modern interior are used not only to decorate the floor and ceiling with walls, but also to mask wires and even pipes with a small diameter.

Features of wooden skirting boards

The cost of a plinth is determined by the type of wood, but in any case, wooden decor will cost more than plastic counterparts. It should be noted that in this case the value for money is quite fair. The durability and durability of wood products, the possibility of cosmetic renewal and the status look justify such a choice.

The eclectic approach allows you to use wooden skirting boards not only with parquet or plank cladding, but also with a wide range of floor coverings.

Opportunity efficient heat and noise insulation, a variety of configurations and the simplest methods for joints and corners allow you to apply any design solution.

Fixing skirting boards made of wood

When calculating the price of a wooden baseboard, it is necessary to take into account the labor costs for their installation, which requires carpentry skills. Ideally smooth walls create best conditions for mounting. The higher the quality repair work, the more aesthetically pleasing you can make styling. Can be used instead of screws wooden dowels or liquid nails.

Skirting rails made of solid wood are the most workable material: they can not only be painted, but also carved. By changing the standard configuration, you can mask defects and implement non-standard ideas.

Skirting boards with clips

A special technology using metal holders allows you to fix both wooden and veneered skirting boards without damaging the decorative surface.

An important advantage of this method is easy dismantling without damaging the walls and decor, it gives the most convenient access to the communication lines hidden under the skirting boards. The clips are attached in increments of 30-50 cm, then once the skirting board is installed on the fasteners by pressing.

Fashionable configurations of wooden skirting boards

Special wiring channels are not the only innovation that distinguishes modern wooden skirting boards. The fashion for a wide edging around the entire perimeter of the floor conceptually changes the configuration of a wooden plinth.

The traditional boot that expands at the bottom is inferior in popularity to high and narrow baguettes, the surface of which is perpendicular to the floor.

Flat and narrow European-style minimalist skirting boards in models with a height of up to 10 cm are usually used more often in white, with a higher height, milling decoration is done in classical style.

Use of non-standard large sizes wooden skirting boards is possible only in spacious rooms with high ceilings.

The most neutral option is low solid wood baguettes with a height-to-width ratio of 2:1. Such dimensions favorably emphasize the natural texture of the tree.

Selection of wooden skirting boards

Raw baguettes made from the same types of wood as the flooring can be stained and varnished for a uniform effect or contrast. You can also purchase veneered skirting boards, picking them up a tone darker than the floor.

Landmark color solution when choosing a floor baguette, there may also be doorway trims. Skirting boards can be selected in black and white contrast, or exactly in the color of doors and windows.

V modern design painting of skirting boards in the color of walls or furniture is also used.

Ceiling plinth, or wood fillet

A stylish addition to the interior, decorated in a classic style, can be matched to floor decor ceiling plinths made of wood, but it must be taken into account that the installation is more laborious and the need for more careful alignment of the walls and ceiling.

The standard width of wooden planks is from 1 to 3 cm, they are fixed with screws or self-tapping screws.

Preservation wooden decor installed in hard-to-reach places, especially in rooms with high humidity, can only be ensured if treated with special paints and varnishes.

Hello to all DIY lovers!

This summer we had to make quite a big renovation.

And it all started with the fact that we wanted to replace the old wooden windows on plastic. However, since our house is wooden and quite old, when dismantling the old windows, it turned out that part of the wall logs (especially the logs located under the window sills) had rotted quite badly. As a result, in addition to installing new windows, almost half of the wall had to be replaced beforehand.

Naturally, at the same time, the repair was significantly delayed in time (even now it has not yet been completed to the end), and, in addition, much more money had to be spent than planned for the repair in advance.

In this regard, in the last stages of the repair, we had to save a lot, mainly, of course, on what you could not buy, but do it yourself.

As a result, when it came to the plinth, we also decided not to buy ready-made, but to make it ourselves from ordinary spruce and pine boards.

Moreover, we did not make any special demands on the beauty of the plinth, since the floor in our house is also quite old and, perhaps, in a few years it will still need to be changed.

Since the plinth had to be made of boards, it turned out to be somewhat narrow, although, in general, this width turned out to be quite enough. In terms of height, I decided to make it bigger, 50-60 centimeters in order to make it more convenient to attach to the walls.

In order for the skirting board to adjoin the floor well (on which there are bumps in some places), I made the lower edge of the skirting board beveled back at an angle of 10 degrees. So it will fit snugly against the wall (this will be the base surface) and at the same time to the floor, the irregularities of which will not be terrible at the same time.

Below is a drawing of this skirting board with dimensions.

In order to make this skirting board, it took me about two and a half hours in the evening, as well as the following accessories.

Materials:

Boards 2.5 cm thick, 12 cm wide, and 200 cm long.

Tools:

Circular saw for wood;

Electroplaner;

Manual frezer;

Belt sander;

Guide ruler for circular saw;

Figured milling cutter for wood for a manual milling cutter and wrench to install it;

Protective glasses.

First, we install a guide ruler on the circular saw and set the width of the cut pieces for the plinth on it. I set the width to 58mm, allowing for a kerf allowance of about 3mm.

Then we set the tilt of the saw blade to 10 degrees.

Now let's do the cutting.

Here are our blanks already planed.

Now we process the upper front edges of the blanks manual router with a curly cutter installed on it.

This operation must be carried out with goggles, since when the router is working, chips fly in all directions, as well as small pieces of wood that can easily get into your eyes.

After that, we perform the final - finishing workpieces with a grinding machine.

At first glance, the plinth may seem like a very insignificant element. interior decoration any room, but in reality without it it is difficult to get a finished full-fledged interior. The installation of the plinth is carried out at the final stage of all work, that is, after the surface of the walls and ceiling is finished, and the flooring is laid.

According to its purpose, the plinth is divided into two main categories: ceiling and floor. Each of these types is worth talking about in more detail.

The plinth is not just a decorative detail of the interior, but also implements a number of functions, among which it should be noted:

  • wall surface protection high humidity and, as a result, premature aging of the wallpaper;
  • reliable masking of flaws and minor defects that form during installation floor covering. Most often they are concentrated at the junction of the floor and the wall;
  • creating a pleasant and thoughtful design of the room;
  • masking additional cables and wires.

Types of floor plinth

To date, for the manufacture of skirting boards, numerous materials are used, the choice of which determines the basic properties of a decorative and protective element. The diversity of the assortment is due to the existence of a large number of different finishing materials, and in order to achieve a harmonious color transition between the wall and the floor, it is necessary to choose an element that will best suit these goals.

Choice of floor plinth

Choosing the Right decorative element should be based on many parameters. The main criteria are usually the aesthetic considerations of the owners, as well as the features of the room for which the skirting board is selected. If the first factor is purely individual, then the situation with the second is simpler.

When it comes to the features of the room, we mean the surface of the walls. The fact is that not every skirting board is suitable for walls that are characterized by a large number of defects and irregularities. From this point of view ideal option plastic seems to be, because it is highly flexible and has functional elements that can hide flaws - a special edge and fasteners.

In order to purchase right amount building materials, it is important to calculate the perimeter of the room. It is necessary to arm yourself with a centimeter and measure the length of the room, including the so-called hard-to-reach places, and then divide the resulting figure by the standard skirting board length - 2.5 meters.

This technology is considered the main one and is applicable to most types of skirting boards. Depending on the material, there may be minor discrepancies, which are specified in the course of work. For example, plastic skirting boards are fastened with dowels and screws, and fastening clips are used for MDF panels.

Stage 1. At the first stage, you should take the necessary measurements described above. To avoid embarrassing situations, construction material bought "in reserve", that is, 3-5 meters more. At the stage of acquiring a skirting board, it is important not to forget about the connecting elements and plugs.

Stage 2. It is necessary to arm yourself with a set of tools, without which it will be difficult to complete the installation: a drill, a hacksaw, a miter box, dowels and screws.

Important: in order for the skirting board joints to be tightly fitted to each other, the material at the ends must be cut at an angle of 45 degrees. We insert the plinth into the miter box, adjust the angle and cut it with a hacksaw.

Stage 4. Marking usually starts from the corner, which is located on the longest wall of the room. You need to step back five centimeters from the corner and make a mark with a simple pencil. The following points are placed at a distance of forty centimeters from each other.

Stage 5. It is necessary to attach the product to the surface and mark the places where the holes will be drilled. For this, a drill with a diameter of three millimeters is used.

Stage 6. After that, you should mount the corner and screw the plinth to the wall surface with screws.

Stage 7. At the final stage, install the upper half of the plinth or decorative tape.

Mounting the plinth on the ledge

Step 1. First of all, we make oblique cuts so that the connection is not inward, but towards the outside.

Step 2. We nail the part with a nail without a hat.

Step 3. We fix the element with dowel-nails.

Step 4. We eliminate defects with putty or varnish.

Ceiling plinth - types and features

A ceiling plinth or fillet is a special type of cornice that is used to avoid broken corners in the room and make the interior design as harmonious as possible.

  • PVC skirting board- cheap, light, functional, but unstable to temperature fluctuations;
  • foam board skirting board- economical, easy to process, but combustible and has low strength;
  • polyurethane baseboard- durable, flexible, easy to install, resistant to temperature extremes, moisture resistant. Among the shortcomings, only the high cost of products can be noted;
  • styrofoam skirting board- relatively affordable, looks good and imitates real stucco. Cons - fragile and brittle;
  • gypsum plinth- high-quality, durable, environmentally friendly. Allows for a unique design. Disadvantages - fragility, bulkiness, high cost;
  • wooden crafts- strong, durable, aesthetic and environmentally friendly. Among the minuses is a low plasticity index.

Choosing a ceiling plinth

Usually the choice ceiling plinth based on its parameters. The length of the products is standard - two meters, but the width can vary from one centimeter to twenty. Before giving preference to one or another option, you should understand how the width of the skirting board affects the appearance of the entire room.

A wide plinth visually smoothes the corners of the room, and also helps to hide numerous surface defects and the junction ceiling structure and walls. However, such a solution would be appropriate only in situations where the size of the room allows the use of a bulky baseboard. Otherwise, a wide product will visually reduce the room, make it uncomfortable and low. For compact rooms, thin baguettes are ideal.

Do-it-yourself installation of a ceiling plinth

For quick and efficient installation of the ceiling plinth, you will need a set of tools:

  • construction knife;
  • brush;
  • pencil;
  • roulette;
  • ruler;
  • miter box;
  • rubber spatula;
  • sealant;
  • glue;
  • plinth directly.

Step 1. At the first stage, you should prepare the plinth, lay out the elements along the walls and determine the right dimensions. Corner elements are cut with a miter box at an angle of 45 degrees. The "puzzle" of the parts must converge so that there are no problems during installation.

Step 2. It is necessary to take two pre-prepared corner parts of the plinth, cut so that the ends fit snugly against each other, apply glue to the inside of the elements with a brush.

Step 4. Then you need to take the next element, apply glue to it and attach it to the end of the plinth glued from the corner. All other parts are glued in the same way. It is important to press the skirting boards tightly against each other so that there is no gap between them.

Step 5. At the last stage, it is necessary to wipe the gaps between the baseboard, ceiling and wall with a sealant.

It is important to remember: if the plinth is mounted on a stretch ceiling, then a special polyethylene lining should be used. It is placed between the plinth and the surface stretch ceiling. After the installation work is completed, the lining is carefully removed from under the elements.

Following the above rules will allow you to get a quick and high-quality result that will delight the owners of the premises for a long time.

Good luck!
