Calculator of the number of rolls of wallpaper per room online. How to calculate the right amount of wallpaper per room (video)

The range of finishing materials is constantly updated with new developments based on the most advanced achievements modern technologies... Accordingly, the fashion for the design of living quarters in one style or another also fluctuates. However, despite all this, wall-papering is still one of the most popular types of decoration, and is not going to "give up its positions" yet.

The paper can act as a backing for other types of wallpaper such as vinyl or textile topcoats.

  • Instead of paper in the production of wallpaper, it is increasingly used non-woven... This material - the table is environmentally friendly, as it is made from the same cellulose natural fibers, but using a completely different processing technology.

As a result, a nonwoven fabric is obtained, which compares favorably with paper in its resistance to soaking and higher strength characteristics.

As a result, non-woven wallpaper is the most convenient for self-pasting - even under the influence of a wet adhesive environment, they do not lose their "geometry" and do not creep. That is why interlining is increasingly being used as a base for other types of wallpaper.

Non-woven fabric is also used in its "pure form" - paint also adheres well to it, embossing is performed. Perhaps the variety of patterns and the richness of shades are not as high as that of paper wallpaper, but still the assortment is wide, and there is plenty to choose from.

There is one more important nuance- non-woven fabric, as seen in the illustration, has a translucent structure. Sometimes the effect of "punching" through the pasted wallpaper of the color of the wall is possible, especially if light shades of decoration are chosen. This leaves a certain imprint on the need for a more thorough preparation of the surface for pasting with the desired uniform color. However, sometimes this phenomenon is even used for "useful purposes" - a certain toning is given to the wall in advance in the necessary areas, which will shine through the pasted finish - as planned by the designer.

So, non-woven wallpapers are practically in no way inferior to paper ones, in many respects they surpass them. The only conditional drawback is the higher cost of such finishing material.

  • They have the highest indicators of surface resistance to moisture and abrasion, to fading under the influence of ultraviolet rays. They are perfect for rooms where the peculiarities of its use require frequent maintenance of the surface of the walls (kitchen, hallway), or in which a high level of humidity is constantly maintained.

To be absolutely precise, only the outer layer of such wallpaper is vinyl (polyvinyl chloride). The inner backing, which is responsible for gluing the canvases to the wall, is either paper or non-woven.

The outer polymeric coating (PVC) has good hydrophobic properties, and lends itself well to applying a relief embossed pattern. It perfectly adheres to special indelible paints of the brightest shades, which are not afraid of abrasion, among other things, and the range of vinyl wallpapers is extremely wide.

The disadvantage of vinyl wallpaper is insufficient vapor permeability, that is, it is difficult for walls covered with such a finish to "breathe", which can spoil the microclimate in the room. Therefore, such wallpaper is not recommended for use in children's rooms and bedrooms. People with a sensitive sense of smell can be annoyed by the light characteristic "aroma" of PVC, which can be retained for a long time.

Another "minus" is the high density and mass of such canvases, and only specially designed for PVC wallpaper should be used for decoration. Cope with vinyl wallpaper without the appropriate experience is much more difficult than with paper, and even more so - non-woven.

On sale you can find other types of wallpaper for walls, made from materials that are very non-standard in the usual presentation. So, textile tapestries are gaining popularity (by the way, they were once the "progenitors" of all modern types of wallpaper), glass cloth, metallized, cork, bamboo, from coconut fibers and some others. But since this publication is nevertheless aimed more at people who first undertake to conduct self repair, we will not dwell on these "exotic" options. Taking on the gluing of such an unusual finish without experience is a deliberately losing event, which will almost certainly end in failure with the loss of considerable funds.

How to approach the problem of choosing the most optimal wallpaper? Of course, to them, as to materials decorative finishing, first of all, there are requirements for external design. It makes no sense to dwell on this aspect in this publication - we have slightly different goals, especially since a lot of space has already been given to such questions on the pages of the portal.

What rules are followed when choosing wallpaper by color and pattern?

It is clear that the decisive argument has always been and remains the preference of homeowners. Nevertheless, you should heed some recommendations. So, for example, there are certain canons. Moreover, they often resort to a complex one.

In this case, we are more concerned with the performance of the finishing material.

  • For rooms constantly flooded with street light, you should choose wallpaper that has increased resistance to fading, otherwise you will have to deal with updating the finish too often. And the greater the likelihood of sunlight hitting the walls, the higher the stability indicator should be.
  • It has already been mentioned that for residential premises, heavy vinyl wallpapers, no matter how attractive in design they may seem. Here, when choosing, the emphasis should still be made towards environmental friendliness and the ability of the material to maintain an optimal balance of temperature and humidity in the room, without the likelihood of condensation on the walls. At the same time, wallpaper in bedrooms should not attract dust, otherwise the manifestation of allergic reactions is not excluded.
  • For the kitchen, vinyl wallpaper will be just right - the inevitable vapors and their deposition on the walls require private cleaning. And PVC in this case is even especially good because moisture is very weakly absorbed into its surface - you can avoid indelible stains.
  • For bathrooms the best choice will become a material with pronounced hydrophobic properties - high-quality vinyl wallpaper on a non-woven basis will do.

  • For narrow or cramped rooms with increased traffic intensity (vestibule, etc.), the qualities of wear resistance are important, that is, resistance to external abrasive influences.

It is imperative to ask the seller in the store about all the qualities of the purchased wallpaper. But relying only on such advice is not entirely reasonable, and you yourself need to be able to identify necessary information, examining the original packaging of the product.

What does a wallpaper packaging label tell you about?

Each roll of wallpaper is accompanied by a product label, which contains a lot of information useful to the buyer - you just need to be able to read it correctly.

Non-woven wallpaper

  • First of all, it is the article of a specific type (model) of wallpaper (pos. 1). It so happens that there are wallpapers that are very similar in design, and when you release the packed goods, it is not surprising to make a mistake and get a roll that, in fact, will differ from all the others in its pattern.
  • The article is far from everything. Wallpapers are produced in batches, and each of them corresponds to one filling of the technological line with colorful compositions. Naturally, manufacturers adhere to a single technology when releasing their products, but still, even small differences in the composition of the paint used can significantly affect the appearance of the finish.

The catch is that it is almost impossible to catch such a difference in a store, and the effect of "uneven striping" appears after gluing it to the walls. Therefore, when choosing a product of one article, do not forget to check that the batch completely matches - then all rolls are guaranteed to fit one another. A batch is usually indicated by a group of numbers. On the labels of imported wallpaper, this indicator is often referred to by another term: "Batch number" (item 2).

  • Pay attention to the size of the wallpaper. Not all rolls are the same and this should be borne in mind. There are several standards that can be found in today's assortment of stores.

- The most common are rolls 10.05 meters long and 0.53 meters wide.

- Increasingly, wider versions began to be produced - the same length, but twice as wide - 1.06 meters. Pasting walls with their help, with experience, is significantly accelerated.

- Less often, but still there are wallpapers of the same width (0.53 and 1.06 m), but already 15, 20 and even 25 meters long.

- Some foreign manufacturers adhere to their own standards and their products may have completely different widths. There is a fairly wide variety, but our market more often comes with wallpaper with a width of 0.7 m. The width can even reach 1.5 m, but this is already a rather rare phenomenon, and high-quality gluing of such huge canvases requires remarkable skill.

Please note that the size often indicates a possible error. That is, if a roll "end-to-end" is calculated for, say, 4 canvases, then an unpleasant surprise is quite possible when the last piece suddenly turns out to be shorter than the others (pos. 3).

There may be textual information on the label - it can be easy to understand even without knowing the language (pos. 4).

Finally, there are several pictograms on the label that speak about the features of this type of wallpaper (pos. 5) and the rules for adjusting the pattern (pos. 6). These icons are standard, independent of the country of production and the language of the text on the label, so it will not be difficult to decipher them. Pictograms can be conditionally divided into several groups, and their meanings are shown in the table below:

PictogramExplanation of the meaning of the pictogram
Wallpaper performance icons
Wallpaper is not highly resistant to moisture - it is enough only for the gluing process.
Moderate moisture resistance, allowing infrequent wet cleaning of the surface
Pronounced moisture resistance, not limiting owners in the number of wet cleaning
The durability of the coating allows for periodic cleaning with a brush
Restrictions on the number of wet cleaning with a brush and with the use of household detergents no.
The surface covered with wallpaper is highly resistant to mechanical stress, including impacts and scratching
Wallpaper is not resistant to fading.
Moderate resistance to sunlight
Wallpaper with increased resistance to fading.
High resistance to fading when exposed to sunlight.
Wallpaper with maximum resistance to ultraviolet rays, practically not subject to fading under the most unfavorable operating conditions.
Pictograms characterizing the features of removing wallpaper from the wall
The wallpaper can be easily removed with a single piece, without pre-moistening.
When the wallpaper is removed, it delaminates into the face layer and the glued base remaining on the wall.
Pre-moistening is required to remove wallpaper from the wall.
Icons that indicate special properties of the wallpaper
Duplex wallpaper with paper or non-woven backing and embossed front layer. They are able to hide small errors of the wall.
This model is part of a selected collection, to which other decorative elements of the premises are provided.
Glue application icons
The glue is applied only to the wallpaper itself.
Only the wall is coated with glue.
The wallpaper is equipped with its own adhesive layer, which requires moistening of the cloths to bring it into working condition.

The next group of icons is already about the features of pasting wallpaper and combining a picture. Since this issue directly affects the topic discussed in the article, such icons require a little more attention.

A reversible arrangement is usually typical for wallpaper with a vertical linear pattern, which does not require any alignment - only vertical alignment. An example of this is shown in the illustration below.

There are such wallpapers - not so often, cutting them out does not cause any particular difficulties, and the main thing is just not to forget about the need for a constant change of direction - so the drawing will acquire the desired completeness.

This type is the most convenient for cutting and further gluing. Cutting canvases to the desired length can be done from any arbitrary point. As a rule, this is a finish with vertical lines or with a completely chaotic pattern - embossed or tinted.

Wallpaper is glued with canvases end-to-end, with the alignment of a symmetrically located pattern - horizontal alignment.
Wallpaper is also glued with canvases end-to-end, but the pattern is spaced vertically. The result is a diagonal pattern.
The value of the rapport (step of the picture) and the value of the displacement (as a rule - ½ of the rapport).

Here it is necessary to make special explanations, since the cases are already more complicated both for cutting and for wall mounting.

  • In the first case, it is a little simpler - all wallpaper canvases are symmetrical to one another or completely similar, that is, during preliminary cutting, you can always focus on one point. And since in the overwhelming majority of cases, cutting wallpaper into rolls in production is also carried out automatically from one starting point, then home cutting will be easier.

True, there is a nuance that can "upset" the master.

There is such a thing - rapport. This is a vertical step between two completely identical patterns. Since in this case all the canvases start from one point, then the option is not excluded that after cutting the sheet, in order to start a new one, you will have to remove a lot of scraps. In the most unfavorable case, such a trim can approach the height of the rapport in its length, and that, in turn, sometimes reaches half a meter or more. This must be taken into account when making calculations.

  • The next case is even more difficult for cutting, and often causes difficulties for inexperienced craftsmen to apply wallpaper correctly.

In this version, the pattern also has its own step, but the canvases are no longer symmetrical or do not start from one point, since the pattern is displaced diagonally by a certain amount. Most often, this is half of the rapport, although there are some types of wallpaper that can be offset in ⅓ steps.

Wallpaper for painting

Again, when cutting canvases, a situation is not excluded when pieces of length, in the worst case, even up to a whole rapport, will go into the trimming.

  • The next in the table shows the icon, which denotes the height of the rapport (in the numerator) and the amount of displacement of the picture on the adjacent canvas (in the denominator). This should also be taken into account when calculating the required amount of wallpaper.

This type is not so common, and usually similar wallpaper do not require adjusting the pattern - they just create a common canvas, for example, for painting. So no peculiarities are expected when cutting such sheets.

How is the number of wallpapers calculated?

Determination of consumption using tables

The easiest way, of course, to determine the required amount of wallpaper, is to refer to the tables that show the dependence on the perimeter of the room or even on the area of the room.

Consumption tables:

- for rolls of standard 10.05 × 0.53 m (from the perimeter of the room):

Algorithm for self-calculation of the number of wallpapers

Tables, of course, are convenient, but their accuracy is "lame". Agree that it is one thing for wallpapers that fit arbitrarily, without any combination of the pattern, and quite another if their rapport reaches 500 ÷ 600 mm. In addition, the room may have its own characteristics, which may also require consideration when determining the required number of rolls. Therefore, for greater accuracy, it is still better to carry out the calculation yourself.

The initial data for calculations, again, will be the length of the walls in the room (perimeter) and the height of the areas to be glued.

  • Very often in tables or in practical guidelines the term "ceiling height" is mentioned, which is probably still not entirely correct, and under certain circumstances can be misleading. It would be more correct to proceed from the positions of the section of the wall to be pasted, and this value often differs significantly from the height of the ceiling. So, often gluing is carried out with a non-removable plinth at the junction of the floor and wall. Further, wallpapering is recommended when it is already mounted - and this is also a certain height. Yes, and the very idea of \ u200b \ u200bthe design of a room can provide for gluing canvases not to the ceiling itself, but only to a certain level.

If a composite sticker is supposed, in which the lower part of the wall is decorated with one material, and the upper part with another, then the calculations are made for each type of wallpaper separately, based on the height of the wall section.

  • The second nuance is also obvious - not the entire perimeter of the room can be taken into account, but only the length of those sections that are to be pasted with this particular type of wallpaper.
  • In any case, no matter how the sticker is planned, all vertical sections without exception should be covered with solid canvases. The presence of horizontal joints between wallpapers of the same type is not allowed - this will look extremely ugly.
  • This requirement predetermines the first stage of the calculation - it is necessary to find out how many solid canvases can be obtained from one roll.

To do this, divide the length of the roll by the height of the area to be glued, to which is added:

- for wallpapers that do not require pattern matching - at least 25-30 mm on each side, for precise cutting of the canvases in place after gluing. Total amendment Δ H can be 50 ÷ 60 mm.

- if the wallpaper requires pattern matching, then it is necessary, except Δ H, also take into account the height of the rapport R.

As a result, we get the formula:

n =Lp / (Hc +Δ H +R)

n- the number of canvases from one roll;

Lp- the length of the wallpaper roll;

Hc- the height of the wall to be pasted;

Δ H- additive for cutting;

R- the value of the rapport.

A simple example. The height of the wall section on which the wallpaper will be glued (from the plinth to the ceiling curb) is 2550 mm. The roll of selectable wallpaper is 10,050 mm long, and the rapport indicated on the label is 32 cm (320 mm).

n = 10050 / (2550 + 50 + 320) = 3.44 ≈ 3 pcs.

The value is always rounded down to the nearest whole number. In total, only 3 whole canvases are obtained from one roll. The remainder from each roll will be 1290 mm, but they will also be useful for finishing wall fragments.

  • Now you need to decide how many canvases are required to fill the entire wall area around the perimeter of the room (or the area to be finished). It is not difficult to calculate this, since the length of the walls is known, as well as the width of the wallpaper roll.

N = Pn / D

N- the total number of required canvases;

Rp- the length of the walls (the perimeter of the room or the total length of the trimmed sections).

D- the width of the wallpaper roll.

For example, a room is completely pasted over, and its perimeter is 17.8 meters. The selected wallpaper is 530 mm wide (0.53 m).

N = 17.8 / 0.53 = 33.58 ≈ 34 canvases

The resulting value is also rounded, but always upwards.

  • It remains only to determine how many rolls you need to purchase. Obviously, you need to divide the total number of canvases by the number of canvases obtained from one roll.

K =N /n

For our example:

K = 34/3 = 11.33 ≈ 12 rolls.

The resulting value is always rounded up.

The calculation is quite simple, but, perhaps, some readers will have questions regarding non-closable sections of the wall - should they be taken into account when carrying out calculations? For example, what to do with windows and doors?

There is no single "recipe" for this case - much depends on the specific features of the room, and it should be approached, in a certain sense, creatively:

- Firstly, doors and windows are different. If there is a large on the wall panoramic window or a wide double-leaf door - then there is no special sense in including them in the common perimeter - it is not visible, since it will turn out to be too large calculated number wallpaper canvases that simply remain unclaimed.

If the window is small, or the door (for example, to a bath or a bathroom) is not wide, then it often makes sense to simply “not notice” them and include their location in the general perimeter of the room.

- The second criterion for evaluation is the amount of material remaining after cutting the coils. For example, in the example discussed above, there is a surplus of 1290 mm from each roll. This amount should be enough to completely cover all the fragments of the wall above the doors, above and below the windows. However, it also happens that the roll is cut with almost no residue, and there is no need to count on trimming. In this case, of course, it is better to include sections of windows and doors in the general perimeter.

What to do with areas that, in order to save materials and labor costs, the owners do not plan to glue - behind stationary large-sized furniture, behind carpets, etc.? It is difficult to say how justified such an approach is, because it is possible that soon you will want to do some kind of rearrangement in the room. However, here everyone decides independently.

Another tip is to always buy one roll more than calculated. Even if the pasting went brilliantly, without defective stripes, then this spare roll will not take up much space during storage, but sometimes it can come to the rescue. An accidentally damaged surface, an indelible stain and other surprises - you can always carry out a quick redecoration of an unsightly area.

Below is a calculator that will allow you to quickly and with a sufficient degree of accuracy calculate the required number of rolls of wallpaper to decorate a room. When compiling it, all the subtleties that were discussed above were taken into account.

Preceded by mass preparatory phases... This is the choice of a suitable design, and the preparation of the wall, as well as the calculation of the amount of wallpaper per room. In this article, we will analyze all the necessary nuances of such a task.

General Provisions

Let's devote a few words to this choice. Why are they most often used for interior furnishings? The reason for this is that they have many advantages.

Dignity

  • Huge assortment of all kinds of colors and ornaments, as well as materials used to create products.

  • Flexible pricing... There are, as well as very cheap models, and incredibly expensive. To a greater extent, this is influenced by the presence of expensive raw materials in the structure.

  • Do-it-yourself ease of application... Wallpaper gluing does not require any special skills and can be easily implemented independently.

  • Protecting the surface of the walls and masking their minor flaws.
  • Ease of drawing up a preliminary estimate... Calculating the number of rolls of wallpaper per room is much easier than, for example, calculating the required displacement of paints and varnishes.

The need for budgeting

There are three most important reasons why you need to calculate rolls of wallpaper per room:

  1. In order not to be without at the very peak renovation works... Agree, running while the glue dries headlong in search of an unsupported roll is not very fun. Moreover, a similar shade may be generally problematic to find.
  2. In order not to buy unnecessary products. If we are talking about cheap paper samples, then it's okay, you can type with a margin, in case restoration is necessary. But if it is natural or textile wallpaper, then an extra roll will significantly hit your family budget.

  1. And the last reason is that you simply need to know how much you need to go to the store.

We count

You will need the following things to carry out the calculations:

Required tools

  • Roulette for taking the necessary measurements;

  • Pencil and blank paper for taking notes;

  • Calculator to quickly deal with calculations.

We carry out measurements

The calculation of wallpaper consumption per room will not be correct without precise linear dimensions:

  • The first is to measure the perimeter of the room. Let it be 18 meters in our case.

  • Then the height of the ceilings. Usually it is two and a half meters. If you use products with a pattern, then you need to add an additional thirty centimeters to fit it.

Tip: it is also recommended to immediately take into account some margin, compensating for the unevenness of the walls, and add another five centimeters. Since it is much easier to cut off the protruding edge than trying to patch up the translucent wall with segments.

  • You will also need the parameters of doors and windows. After all, they do not need to be glued, so why buy extra material? For example, let's say that the result is eight square meters.
  • Width classic wallpaper is equal to 53 centimeters, and the length is 10 meters and 5 centimeters.

Advice: if you plan to use wallpaper for painting, then pay attention to the labeling of the rolls. Since they usually differ significantly in size from standard products, this must be taken into account in the calculations.

Formula

Instructions:

  1. We multiply the perimeter (P) by the height (H), taking into account the required margin: 18 × 2.85 = 51.3 m 2. This total area walls (S o).
  2. But in the room there are door and window openings (S p), which we measured in advance, therefore 51.3-8 = 43.3 m 2, which will be the final area (S and).
  3. We find out the surface of the roll by multiplying its length (h 1) by the width (h 2) 10.05 × 0.53 = 5.33 m 2 (S p).
  4. We divide the required coverage area by the area of one roll and we get: 48.3 / 5.33 = 9 units of rolls are necessary for the complete decoration of the room in question.

A single formula for calculating wallpaper for a room will look like this: (P × h-S p) / (h 1 × h 2). You just have to substitute the data that you will receive after the product of all the required dimensions: P is the perimeter of the room, H is the height of the ceilings adjusted for cropping, S p is the area of all openings in the room, h 1 is the length of one roll and h 2 is its width.

Any renovation in an apartment should begin with the preparation of a preliminary estimate to determine the required amount Supplies, which will be needed during the finishing work. If the task is to replace the wallpaper in the room, then first of all you need to determine the number of rolls required for pasting it. A correctly performed calculation will allow you to avoid unnecessary problems in the future during the repair, as well as save your money.

Today there are several well-known and available ways calculating the required number of rolls of wallpaper:

  • along the perimeter of the room and the number of stripes;
  • by the total surface area of the walls required for pasting;
  • using online calculators.

Calculation around the perimeter of the room and the number of stripes

This method involves determining the required amount wallpaper stripes required for pasting a specific room. For this:

  • the length and width of the room is measured, on the basis of which its total perimeter is determined;
  • the width of the window and door opening is measured, which is subtracted from the total perimeter;
  • the resulting value is divided by the width of the wallpaper rolls with which it is supposed to paste over the room;
  • the calculated value is rounded up to the nearest whole value and represents the right amount stripes;
  • this value is divided by the number of stripes that one roll of wallpaper contains, depending on its length;
  • the resulting value is also rounded to the nearest whole value, which is the number of wallpaper rolls required.

Let's consider this calculation method with a specific example:

Example. It is required to paste over an ordinary room measuring 7.5 m by 3 m, with a ceiling height of 2.5 m, a window opening of 2.1 m by 1.5 m and a door of 0.9 m by 2 m.Wallpaper 53 cm wide will be used for pasting. and a length of 10 m.

To calculate the required number of rolls of wallpaper you need:

  1. Determine the total perimeter of the room: (7.5 + 3) * 2 = 21 m.
  2. Determine the total width of the window and door opening: 2.1 + 0.9 = 3 m.
  3. Subtract the total width of the openings from the total perimeter: 21 - 3 = 18 m.
  4. Divide the resulting value by the width of the wallpaper roll: 18 / 0.53 = 33.9 and round the result to an integer value - you get 34 strips required for pasting the room.
  5. Calculate the number of strips of wallpaper in one roll, for which you need to divide the length of the roll by the height of the stream: 10 / 2.5 = 4.
  6. Divide the required number of strips of wallpaper by the number of stripes in one roll: 34/4 = 8.5 and round this figure to an integer value - it turns out 9.

Thus, 9 rolls of wallpaper are required for pasting this room. It should be borne in mind that this method does not take into account the surface of the walls above and below the openings of windows and doors, so it is advisable to additionally purchase another roll.
read in a separate review.

Calculation based on the area of the glued surface of the walls

This method is considered more accurate and economical, especially for rooms with a large area. It is based on determining the total surface area of the walls of the room, which must be pasted over with wallpaper.

For this:

  • the total area of the walls is calculated by measuring the perimeter of the room and multiplying it by the height of the ceiling;
  • the total area of the openings of windows and doors is determined;
  • the resulting value is subtracted from the total area of the walls, resulting in a value equal to the surface area of all walls that need to be pasted over with wallpaper;
  • the area of the wallpaper in one roll is calculated by multiplying the width of the roll by its length;
  • in conclusion, the total area of the walls for pasting is divided by the area of the wallpaper in one roll;
  • the resulting value, rounded up to a whole number, will be the required number of rolls for pasting a room.

We use an online calculator

If there is no desire or opportunity to carry out calculations yourself, you can use a special online calculator... Today, there are many sites on the Internet that allow you to use the services of such an online calculator completely free of charge.

To carry out the calculation, you must first measure the following values:

  • the length of the room;
  • the width of the room;
  • ceiling height;
  • the width of the wallpaper roll;
  • the length of the wallpaper roll.

The obtained values must be entered in the appropriate fields on the online calculator's website and get the finished result.

For example, we will use the online calculator available on the site, using the same initial data as for the first two examples. We enter the available values in the appropriate fields and we get the same result - 9 rolls of wallpaper required for pasting this room.

Wall cladding requires care and careful preparation. It is important to correctly determine the quantity necessary material, so that it is enough for finishing vertical surfaces and you do not have to finish finishing with leftovers or buy a roll, which may not match in tone with the existing wallpaper. Calculating the number of wallpapers per room is not as difficult as it might seem at first glance.

Where to begin?

Wallpaper presented for sale by trade marks has different lengths and widths. They can be rolled or packaged, have a pattern or embossed texture. In each case, the parameters of the wallpaper, the fit of the pattern, the features of vertical surfaces, and the height of the ceiling matter. In addition, you will need to measure the dimensions of the door and window openings: This eliminates the area that does not need pasting.

If the layout of the room provides for the presence of protrusions, arches, niches or panels, this must also be measured, determining the need for finishing raw materials. It may seem that it is easier to count the number of wallpapers on the old coating, but the pattern of new canvases will be completely different, therefore do not expect the consumption to be identical.

If during the pasting it is planned to accentuate the ceiling with wallpaper, you should determine the parameters of the gluing area using a construction tape. In any case, the perimeter of the room is initially measured, checking each indicator twice and writing the data into a schematic drawing of the wall design: it’s easier to imagine the future wall decor and choose the least amount of cladding minus untreated surfaces.

Measurements are carried out from the ceiling to floor level, without throwing back the allowance for the floor plinth. Since the walls in most cases have a curvature, you need to draw them in several sections, choosing the highest indicator for marking.

It is important not to forget that the large curvature of the walls can cause the use of horizontal pasting, and this is a different calculation of the material.

Roll sizes

To date, different parameters of the wallpaper are presented to the attention of buyers. Due to the composition, decor, production method, they can have different parameters: so manufacturers provide for the simplicity and convenience of pasting, minimizing the number of joints. At the same time, the materials in demand are wall coverings of greater width and length, which is indicated on each material, having a minimum error and complying with existing standards.

These data are entered into online calculators, through which you can find out the required amount of raw materials in the store. Today, the width of roll wallpaper is 53, 60, 74, 106, 120, 150 cm. The length of rolls is no less varied: depending on the specific type of material used to create the canvas, it can be 5, 8, 10 (10.05), 12, 15, 18, 20, 25 m.

The larger indicator is especially convenient because if there is a pattern in the wallpaper, you will not have to paste over the walls with remnants, gluing the missing fragments with the print fitting to the full length. The most demanded cladding parameters are wallpaper with dimensions:

  • 53x105 cm - the best option material, convenient when pasting for a beginner or in places with protrusions, corners;
  • 106x105 cm - a common size used by craftsmen, which speeds up the cladding;
  • 74x100 cm - European size, which is the golden mean between the first two, convenient for one to work.

In addition, the thickness of the wallpaper matters. For example, thin varieties tend to shrink after glue is applied to the back. Thick materials can vary in length, so a small amount of material is required for each strip to align the top and bottom of the panel. It is added to the calculation performed or to each strip (about 5 cm).

You can not take the wallpaper back to back: sometimes a scrap or an incorrectly cut fragment is possible in the work, which should be laid at least in small residues from each roll or in one large one in size.

Residues can be used to trim short sections of walls (for example, over windows or doorways).

Calculation methods

It is possible to calculate the wallpaper for the facing of the room correctly in several ways, which depend on the number of walls. In some cases, the planes are sheathed with panels, laminate, often they are laid out with bricks, stones, tiles, decorative plaster... The number of rolls can be calculated using the formula, knowing the perimeter of the walls, using the area, according to the pattern or accent zones. Consider the options when wall cladding with wallpaper is carried out on 4 walls, choosing for decoration wallpaper with a length of 10 m with a width of 53 and 106 cm.

Perimeter

The easiest way is to find out the required amount of wall cladding around the perimeter of the glued surfaces. This means that you need to measure the length of each side, taking into account possible discrepancies in the curvature of the walls, or by measuring two sides, multiplying the result by two. In other words, first add up the sum of the lengths of all sides. For instance, if the larger indicators are 4 m, the smaller ones are 3 m, the formula looks like this: 4 + 3 + 4 + 3 or (4 + 3) x2 = 14 m.

Having learned the perimeter of the room, measure the height of the walls. This will tell you how many strips of material will be produced from one roll. To do this, the length of the roll is divided by the height of the walls: if, for example, this indicator is 2.7 m, the footage is 10 m, the number of strips is recognized as follows: 10: 2.7 = 3.703 (3 whole stripes and the remainder equal to about 1.9 m). It remains to calculate how many rolls of a certain type are needed in order for the wallpaper to be enough for the walls to be treated. To do this, the perimeter of the room to be pasted is divided by the width of the roll: in our case, 14: 0.53 = 21.415 or 14: 1.06 = 13.2 (rounding off, we get 22 stripes with a narrow width and 14 stripes with a wide one). Then it remains to count the number of rolls: the consumption is equal to the total number of strips divided by the number of strips in a roll: 22: 3 = 7.3 (8 rolls) or 14: 3 = 4.6 (round up to 5).

By area

There is an equally accurate method of calculating wallpaper for pasting, based on the area of the room to be pasted, if the entire room is pasted over with material. In order for the measurement accuracy to be as accurate as possible, it is worth measuring the total footage of the room: measuring the length, width and height of the walls in several places of each wall, revealing the highest indicator with a construction tape. Having learned the large measurements of length and width, their footage is added, multiplied by two (two large and two smaller walls), then multiplied by the height. For example, if the length of the walls is 4 m, the width is 2 m, the height is 2.5 m, we find the area by the formula: ((4 + 2) x2) x2.5 = 12x2.5 = 30 sq. m.

In other words, the area of the glued surface is 30 square meters.

Now you need to calculate how much of the wall area will cover 1 roll. To do this, multiply the length of the roll by its width. For example, with a width of 53 cm and a length of 10 m, we get: 10x0.53 = 5.3 sq. m. Using wide meter wallpaper, the area will be larger: 10x1.06 = 10.6 sq. m.

In order to calculate how many rolls of finishing wallpaper for the walls you need to buy, it remains to divide the surface area indicator by the roll area parameter: 30 sq. m: 5 sq. m (rounded 5.3 per roll) = 6 rolls at 53 cm wide. wide wallpaper less needed: 30: 10 = 3 rolls. The calculation of this method gives identical results as if the measurements were taken along the perimeter.

With an image

It is easier to calculate the number of plain wallpaper, but patterns with a pattern require a different approach. The fact is that each print differs in the length of the rapport, which affects each strip and often increases the consumption from one panel to 40 cm or more. If the calculation of the previous wallpaper can be carried out at home, in the same case, you will have to find out the expense directly on the spot (in the store). The disadvantage of this method is the fact that often wallpaper rapport is not always visible near, therefore, if you do the calculations carelessly, you can make a mistake. Initially, you need to unfold the strip of wallpaper and move back at least two meters: this way it will be better to see where the rapport ends.

The disadvantage of printed wallpaper is a lot of leftovers. In addition, in the process of working with corners, discrepancies in the pattern may occur due to the curvature of the walls and the difference in their height, while it is far from always possible to match the pattern of the panels as accurately as possible. It is important to carry out the pasting very carefully, combining each element of the picture, without pulling or distorting the wallpaper. In this case, the key indicator of the calculations is the individual pattern repeat. As a rule, in the varieties with a floral print, it is less than in products with monograms and geometric shapes. Usually, when buying wallpaper with a print, the consumption of finishing material increases by about 2 rolls.

Sometimes manufacturers indicate the amount of rapport or fit on the information label for each roll. This simplifies material fit calculations, which can be carried out on the basis of the first two methods: perimeter or area (as when calculating monochromatic varieties). However, the key difference is fitting: it can be offset by the whole rapport amount or half of it.

In such cases, a fractional number is indicated on the pictogram (schematic drawing) of the product label, the numerator of which indicates the value of the whole rapport, the denominator determines the displacement of the picture (for example, 53 / 26.5 cm).

In this case, when calculating the finished lengths of the canvases, it is important to add the length of the rapport to the length of the strip.

table

If the calculations are confusing, you can use a ready-made table that will indicate how many rolls will be required for wall cladding with different ceiling heights and the perimeter of the room. It contains approximate data, so when finishing it is important to add small allowances to each strip in order to avoid the formation of gaps. In this case, it makes sense not to cut all the wallpaper at once into strips of the same length: often the upper edge of wallpaper with a pattern or relief texture differs by several mm, which is associated with the curvature of the walls. Do not cut more than one strip at once, marking the cut of the second: it is better to cut off the upper cut of the panel when the first one is glued, than to glue the missing millimeters, or by pulling the side edge so that the drawing coincides.

When drying, the material can be skewed, which will ruin the flawless monolithic appearance of the wall covering. Having looked at the tabular data, the required amount is determined by the height of the ceiling and the perimeter of the room. Please note that these heights differ by 15 cm: this means that it is impractical to take the material back to back, you need a small margin. Often, repairs are not done immediately after purchase, it will not be easy to choose the right wallpaper later, because each batch differs in shade and saturation of the pattern.

Liquid coatings

Liquid wallpaper is a packaged facing material, it is a kind of alternative to roll-up counterparts, which is characterized by seamless technology. This finish has three varieties (cellulose, silk and silk-cellulose), each of which has its own nuances and volume. Liquid wallpaper is sold in packages weighing 1 kg in two variations: on the basis of a powder similar to sawdust with glue impregnation, and a thick mixture, ready for use, for which the latter are called "wet wallpaper". Diluted with water, the material is a pasty mass, which is applied to the surface of the walls to be treated like decorative plaster.

Liquid wallpaper is spread on the wall with a spatula, rolled out with a construction roller, sprayed with a special gun. In each case, the material consumption is different, because the thickness of the facing layer itself is also different, which can be from 2 to 6 mm.

Usually, each brand indicates the approximate consumption of material on the package. liquid wallpaper... The approximate indicator of consumption per 1 sq. m is equal to 0.3 kg of thick mass or powder. It turns out that one package weighing 1 kg is enough for 3.3 sq. m. working surface. Often, in order for this consumption to meet the real needs of the finishing material, manufacturers add another 10% of raw materials to the package mass.

Often on the Internet you can find opinions that the consumption of liquid wallpaper is much more economical than the indicated one. Indeed, using a spray gun with a large nozzle, it will take less. The use of a roller will also reduce the amount of raw materials required. However, you should not expect that it will be needed half as much: saving on thickness will lead to the walls being shining through, the mass will be applied unevenly, which will ruin appearance the entire interior. In general, if you need to qualitatively paste over a room with a footage of 18 m, minus window and door openings, it is worth the weight of the mass per 1 sq. m multiply by the number of required cladding squares.

In other words, 18x0.3 = 5.4 kg or 6 bags when rounding.

Do not worry that the remnants of the cladding may disappear. Firstly, there will not be many of them, since the material is voluminous and when performing finishing work, a marriage is not excluded. Secondly, the leftovers can be dried in the open air, then transferred to a clean bag and stored until corrected, up to several years. They will not disappear, but in case of replacing the problematic contaminated area, they will avoid completely removing the wallpaper from the surface of the walls, extending their service life.

Small area

Do not forget that the above calculations relate to the facing of areas excluding window ledges and doorways... This means that when calculating the amount of wallpaper material, it is necessary to subtract the dimensions of the unprocessed areas. To do this, first determine the perimeter of the entire room, subtract the width of the openings (windows), divide the resulting value by the width of the wallpaper roll, then round off the result (this is the number of panels).

After that, it remains to divide the roll length indicator by the ceiling height (the number of strips from 1 roll) and divide the required number of strips by the number of panels in one roll.

The amount of material may be reduced if you plan to partially clad the wall or accentuate the protrusion. For example, to highlight the same level of the wall, it may be necessary to accentuate one or two stripes of rolled varieties, or to make a panel or the back of the rack using liquid wallpaper.

In such cases, you can use a pencil and indicate the approximate area: this will allow you to determine the consumption of a specific accent material. As a rule, if the wall fragment is small, 1 package of liquid wallpaper and 1 roll of meter varieties are enough. However, if the accent zone is large, it is planned to carry out drawings with liquid wallpaper, it makes sense to purchase material with a margin, based on an approximate calculation for one wall by area minus the untreated surface. If this is a roll wallpaper for one wall, you can count the number of stripes taking into account the pattern, then correlate them with the footage of the wallpaper.

The calculations made are approximate: remember that the room may have non-standard design features to be included in the formula. For example, it can be a ledge (three protruding edges are added), a panel (the length and width of the facade are removed), a bay window (the number of additional edges is taken into account).

If the apartment has triangular walls, measurements are taken as for ordinary rectangular walls (the length is multiplied by the height).

If during finishing in some places the facing material passes to the ceiling, it is important to measure the parameters of the working surface, taking into account the curly or straight lines conceived by the design of the facing. When choosing a wall finish, taking into account the wall covering and decoration of furniture items, the desired facades are measured. If you plan to buy wallpaper with a pattern, you can use the remnants of strips for these purposes, the length of which is not enough for the integral distance from floor to ceiling. Study the information on the packaging of rolls: often there is indicated an indicator of the area that, according to the manufacturer, can be pasted over with this material per 1 roll.

Do not forget that the calculation data correspond to reality if the walls of the room are relatively even, and the texture of the material is chosen fine. If horizontal pasting of walls is provided, the calculation will be different. In this case, the distance from one edge of the wall to the other is used as the lengths of each panel, taking into account the transition of the panel to an adjacent plane of about 2 - 4 cm.If the walls are noticeably crooked, you can add another 2 cm to this allowance.

However, it is worth considering that it will have to be cut during the pasting process: the wallpaper in the corners is glued with an overlap with a slight overlap. If the transition is more than 2 cm, it will be noticeable, which visually looks ugly. Moreover, with a broken perspective, it will be more difficult to measure the length of the transverse canvases, taking into account protrusions or different levels, than when carrying out conventional vertical measurements. In order not to suffer in this situation, you can pick up paired wallpaper for finishing the ledges, pasting them over the design features of the room the usual way(vertically).

Performing such a technique, it is important to make sure that two types of wallpaper are used in the decoration: with a pattern and a plain one. It is worth starting from considerations of practicality and simplicity of cladding. In this case, the protrusions and other features are easier to paste over with material without a pattern: this way the curvature of the walls will not be noticeable, it is easier to combine the edges, covering them, if necessary, with moldings or a baguette. In this case, the main level of the walls can be pasted over parallel to the floor.

The combination helps out if the print is large enough, it helps to save on finishing, while not losing in the external and practical characteristics of the wallpaper.

Some varieties are bought to decorate the walls over the main wallpaper, or to create patchwork techniques in bright design styles by gluing pre-cut square or rectangular pieces of small-sized wallpaper to the accent wall. In these cases, the consumption of material will be greater, because such techniques imply the use of a small amount of material in the decoration. Therefore, there will be a lot of leftovers.

To avoid unnecessary waste, for finishing small area the walls of the room, you can use the remnants of wallpaper after the repair of other rooms, if the color and pattern of the material coincides with the one conceived in style and shades. If the raw material is not suitable, it is preferable to buy a photo wallpaper, picking up a picture in the right size, or by ordering photo printing in the desired subject and color scheme for specific measurements. So there will be no leftovers, and the atmosphere of the interior will correspond to the intended one.

The best materials

Finally, it is worth mentioning several durable types of wallpaper that will decorate the interior of any room, will not complicate the workflow, will emphasize the delicate taste of the apartment owners, will look beautiful and will save on finishing, reducing the possibility of marriage finishing work to a minimum. These include:

  • non-woven fabrics - one meter wide ecological wallpaper that does not emit into the air harmful substances, practical and beautiful canvases, easy to paste;
  • textile - advanced premium wallpapers for gluing by experienced craftsmen, which do not need to process the back of the material with an adhesive;
  • silk-screen printing - options with embossed vinyl backing, double-layer wallpaper with the appearance of silk textiles;
  • glass wallpaper - a material that is created on a weaving machine, giving it a clear fixed shape by means of additional impregnations;
  • for painting - plain wallpaper on paper, non-woven and glass base, characterized by the minimum consumption of facing material and the presence of a textured surface.

Of them minimum consumption will be in varieties for painting and liquid wallpaper. They don't need to fit the pattern. Such materials also include glass fiber, which can be painted up to 20 times on the surface.

Using a tape measure, measure the length of each wall and add up the results:

3 + 4 + 3 + 4 = 14 m, or (3 + 4) * 2 = 14 m.
We recognized the perimeter of this room. It is equal to 14 m.

Dividing the perimeter of the room by the width of the wallpaper, we get the number of wallpaper stripes , necessary for gluing this room:
14 / 0.5 = 28 stripes.
Now let's count how many stripes will be obtained from one roll. To do this, divide the length of the roll by the height of the wall.
10 / 2,5 = 4

The resulting number is always rounded down to the nearest whole. Further, the number of strips required should be divided by the number of strips that can be obtained from one roll:
28/4 = 7 rolls.

It is advisable to purchase one more roll than required. In the event that any area is stained or damaged, you will always have the opportunity to use an additional roll.

Preparing walls for wallpaper

To prepare the walls for wallpaper, you must carefully clean the room. The litter on the floor is completely changed - the old one is removed.

Of the tools for marking the surface of the wall and wallpaper, ordinary is best pencil medium hardness (TM or ST) - neither a ballpoint pen nor a marker will work, since traces from them can then appear on the wallpaper.
To draw lines, you need a ruler of length 50 cm and a plumb line, but it's best to use the level.

For cutting wallpaper(and trimming) you will need scissors (long) and a wallpaper knife.
To apply the adhesive to the wall and wallpaper, you will need brushes and rollers.

In addition, for work you will need containers for preparing glue and water for rinsing the sponge. You will need a tray for the roller, since it is extremely inconvenient to collect glue on the roller from a bucket. And you will also need a stepladder when pasting wallpaper.
Working with glue is a messy job, so take care of your workwear. A dressing gown, an apron, a scarf on the head, old sneakers or used sneakers, a rag in a pocket to wipe your hands ...

If you do not have a large sliding table on which you can lay out a full length of wallpaper, then you will have to work on the floor. And working on the floor requires more
thorough insulation of the floor, after all, the ingress of glue on the protective coating on the floor is inevitable.

Before cutting and spreading, there is still a very important work to do, this.
In any specialized wallpaper store, you will see not only a table for estimating the number of rolls you need, but, more importantly, a consultant who will competently answer all your questions.

Due to trimming losses, the actual area that can be covered with one roll of wallpaper will be 15% less than indicated on the roll. The percentage of trim loss may increase depending on how much space the wallpaper pattern repeats takes up. The amount of "pattern repeat" is indicated on the wallpaper packaging. You can compensate for this additional loss by adding the pattern repeat value to the measured wall height in the room.

Measuring room dimensions

Walls . Measure the length of the wall with an accuracy of 10 cm. (If the whole room will be covered with wallpaper, then add up the length of all the walls to determine the perimeter of the room.) This should also include the length of the openings of windows and doors. Measure the height to which the wallpaper will be glued with an accuracy of 10 cm. When measuring the height, skirting boards and upper decorative strips are not taken into account. Ceiling. Measure the length and width of the ceiling to the nearest 10 cm.

How to measure non-standard surfaces

Ceiling protruding structural elements... If you will be wallpapering overlapping ceiling structures, add the width and length of each side to the measured wall area.
