Penofol is an insulating material that combines heat, noise and vapor barrier properties. Its basis is self-extinguishing polyethylene foam, aluminum foiled (on one or both sides). The thickness of the sheets of material is from 3 to 10 mm.

When mounting, it is important to avoid overlaps; butt mounting is the most suitable option.

This insulating material, with its small thickness, has a very low thermal conductivity. The application provides high resistance to heat transfer due to special properties. A large number of closed pores and high reflectivity of polished aluminum foil reduces the radiant component of heat transfer, which is of the greatest importance in total heat loss.

Penofol is practically combined as a reflective vapor barrier when used with mineral wool and fiberglass insulation. It is also advisable to use it in structures where noise and heat insulator of small thickness is required. Steam and waterproofing qualities allow you to completely replace traditional vapor barriers. Since the beginning of production, the structure, application and properties have undergone quite a lot of changes. Initially, it was a roll of sewn polyethylene foam, foiled on one side with aluminum. Classic variant finds application and is in constant demand even now. Over time, they began to produce different kinds penofol with additional properties:

  • Type A - one-sided foiling. It is used in combination with other heaters (polyfoam, styrodur).
  • Type B - double-sided foiling. Can be used standalone.
  • Type C - one-sided foiling, the second surface is covered with an adhesive composition with protective film. It is pasted on the main heaters or on the basis.
  • Type ALP - one of the surfaces is covered with foil (14 microns), laminated on top with a polyethylene film.
  • Types M and R are embossed with one-sided foiling.
  • Perforated. It has the property of passing air due to the peculiarities of the structure.

Applications

How widely the use of the material is evidenced by the list of objects where it is used in one form or another:

  • walls of buildings (inside and outside), attics, mansards, basements, non-capital buildings;
  • production facilities and technological equipment;
  • heat, steam and waterproofing of saunas, showers,
  • insulation of warm floors and roofs;
  • pipelines and expansion tanks;
  • car bodies, commercial and residential trailers, refrigerators;
  • insulation and soundproofing of air conditioning, ventilation and sewerage systems;
  • as heat reflectors for home radiators.

Wall and ceiling mounting

Type A. The material is fastened with a stapler to the inner surface of the wall or ceiling with foil inside the room. Laying is carried out "butt-to-butt". The joints are sealed with mounting tape ("LAMS"). On top of the layer, slats (thickness 1.5-2 cm) are attached, designed to fasten the facing material. The slats will provide an air gap between the foil layer and the cladding and, as a result, the reflective effect of the foil.

When installing a layer of material behind home radiators, heat loss is reduced by 20%.

Type B. When using this type of material, the slats are pre-packed onto the structure. The sheets are cut to size, fastened with a stapler, the joints are glued with aluminum mounting tape. On top of the foam layer, slats are also attached as a basis for finishing. With this method, the properties of both foil surfaces are maximized.

If an external laying of thermal insulation is expected, perforated foam is used. It is mounted with foil outward in front of the facing layer. At particularly low outside temperatures, it is advisable to use the material in conjunction with foam or mineral wool.

Roof vapor barrier

In multilayer roofs, penofol is mounted between lathing battens. A prerequisite is the ventilation of the air gaps. Sheets are attached along the ceilings using the same technology as on the walls. If the roof equipment project provides for the use of foam plastic, then with the installation of foam foam, the costs will be reduced by 2-3 times with the same quality.

When arranging an insulated attic, the material is laid parallel to the cornice overhang directly on the rafters. The overlap of the strips is left at least 10 cm. Penofol is fastened with brackets without tension, forming a sag of about 2 cm. This will allow condensate to be freely drained from the rafters of the counter-lattice. Since the flow of moisture is directed upwards from the premises, water vapor, condensing, moistens the insulation. Therefore, a layer of penofol is attached under it.

Insulation mounting methods

A layer of insulation from type A or C is laid under the finished floor. Pre-filled concrete screed with expanded clay. It can be replaced with a layer of foam (5-10 cm). Penofol is glued or attached to the foam plastic with an overlap on the walls of about 10 cm around the perimeter. Joints are sealed with aluminum tape.

Moisture, the passage of which is prevented by the material, can settle on it. To create a ventilated space above the foil layer, slats (1.5-2 cm) are stuffed. When installing a wooden floor, their role is played by logs. Logs, like slats, are impregnated with drying oil or an antiseptic.

When equipping a “warm floor”, the insulator is placed on a dry screed with a foil layer down, in another embodiment, the reflective layer is directed inside the room. At the same time, a polyethylene film is laid on top of the penofol. Type B is used for arranging the floor of the lower floors above damp and cold basements.

When equipping a "warm floor", if a screed is planned to be poured over the heating elements (for example, under a tile), ALP type foam is used. cement mortar aggressive towards aluminium. The sheets are placed on the screed up with foil with a 10 cm bend on the walls and glued with aluminum tape. After installation heating elements a reinforcing mesh is placed and a screed is poured. The edges are trimmed.

Penofol type A and C is used when installing a warm floor under a floorboard covering. When laying heating elements on the material, it should be remembered that the foil layer has conductive properties.

Floor insulation with penofol is provided due to the reflective effect of the foil layer. It promotes uniform heating of the coating. Impact noise is reduced by 20 dB. Moisture penetration is excluded.

Use for insulation of balconies

The foil layer reflects up to 97% of heat into the room. This makes penofol an effective insulator for warming balconies and loggias. Due to the small thickness, it does not "hide" the usable volume of the room.

Before insulating work, the old finish is dismantled. Corners and cracks are sealed mounting foam. A heat insulator (penoplex, technoplex) is glued or attached to the walls. Vertical logs are fastened through it with dowels to the wall with a step along the width of the foam roll. This sequence takes into account the high thermal conductivity of wood and reduces the risk of freezing. Penofol is attached to the logs with a foil layer towards the room.

Penofol fastening does not require special tools. To work, you need a knife (scissors), a stapler (hammer) or a glue brush.

The cost of insulating material depends on its thickness and the number of foil shells. One-sided penofol can be purchased at a price of 45-75 rubles / m 2, two-sided - 70-110 rubles / m 2. For laying penofol, contractors usually ask for a fee equal to the cost of the material itself.
