Ceramic chimneys are represented on the Russian market by products from ECOTON, EFFE2, Schiedel, TONA and Wolfshöher Tonwerke. ECOTON, Schiedel and TONA offer complete insulated sandwich systems. Wolfshöher Tonwerke produces only fireclay pipes and glue for them - both are used by small manufacturers and assembly firms. EFFE2 products stand apart, with which we will begin the review.

Chimney made of ceramic modules

Chimney made of ceramic modules (EFFE2 ULTRA, EFFE2 DOMUS). It consists of elements of complex cross-section - with inner and outer walls and radial bridges. The working channel can be round (diameter 120–300 mm), oval or rectangular; the outer section of the pipe is only rectangular.

The main disadvantage of a chimney made of all-ceramic modules is associated with insufficient thermal insulation of the internal channel for Russian conditions and, as a result, abundant, especially if equipment with a low flue gas temperature is used (condensing boiler). You have to purchase an additional heat-insulating casing made of pressed stone wool for plastering or independently assemble an insulating box (for example, from gypsum-fiber sheets filled with basalt wool). Another problem is the relatively low strength of the structure: it must be placed inside a pre-designed shaft, lined with bricks or reinforced with steel corners.

Chimney with concrete casing

A chimney with a concrete casing (for example, ECOTON S-block, Schiedel UNI, TONA TEC) is a three-layer "sandwich": the inner ceramic pipe is wrapped with heat-insulating material and enclosed in a shell of hollow claydite-concrete blocks. The casing not only performs a protective and decorative function, but also gives stability to the structure. Such a chimney can only be root: it is installed next to the heating unit on a common or separate foundation.

The accuracy of the manufacture of sockets is very important, which affects the consumption of the mounting solution and the tightness of the joints.

As thermal insulation, ordinary flexible stone wool mats or ready-made "shells" of the same material, but with a higher density, can be used. The latter are preferred in terms of durability and ease of installation, but cost 40% more.

In the concrete elements of the casing, holes must be provided for vertical reinforcing bars, which ensure the strength of the masonry. When installed outside the building, the casing should be plastered and painted with facade paint.

Chimney with metal casing

A chimney with a metal casing (for example, Schiedel Kerastar) is still the same warm “sandwich”, but designed for wall mounting. It is able to withstand outdoor use and does not need finishing (the outer pipe is made of polished stainless steel). Another advantage of such systems is the ability to assemble a chimney of complex configuration, bypass rafters and other obstacles (due to the presence of bends 15, 30 and 60 °).

Chimney installation

The main difficulty in installing ceramic is due to the fact that the design always includes steel elements - an inlet pipe, a cleaning door, and sometimes also a gate, wall mounting brackets and clamps. Since steel has a higher coefficient of thermal expansion than ceramic, joints should be made with a gap of 2–5 mm, using asbestos cord or elastic heat-resistant sealant to seal the joints (Fischer DFS GR, PENOSIL 1500 °C, etc.).

Pottery pipes during installation are glued with special silicate glue. In this case, it is necessary to carefully remove excess working solution, especially from the inner surface of the channel, which must be perfectly smooth, otherwise the pipe will quickly become clogged with soot. Concrete casing modules are laid on cement glue. Since the height of the elements is small, it is necessary to constantly control the verticality of the chimney using a plumb line or a laser level.

Fire clearance from the inner walls of the pipe to unprotected wooden structures must be at least 500 mm; to closed with a heat-insulating screen (mineral wool + steel) - 380 mm.

Finally, it is very important to correctly select and carefully install the head, consisting of a cover plate (usually concrete) and a metal deflector umbrella. The plate must hermetically close the gap between the working channel and the casing. After all, if the insulation in the upper part of the pipe becomes damp, the draft will deteriorate sharply (it may even tip over) and the amount of condensate will increase. An improperly manufactured deflector can also cause traction problems. In this regard, it is better to purchase a cap from the manufacturer of the chimney, even if it costs more than one made on site or ordered from a third-party workshop.

Tona tec ceramic chimneys are a two-component system for the removal of flue gases with heating temperatures up to 600°C. Depending on the type of boiler, the joints are sealed with mineral (KIT) or silicone sealant. The use of KIT makes it possible to withstand the maximum surface heating up to 1000°C without depressurization of the system.

Tona tec two-component ceramic pipe has different characteristics and purpose, depending on the sealant used:

  • Cerasecur is a silicone base used for low temperature heating units. Ideal for connection to a condensing gas boiler. Use for any equipment with the closed combustion chamber is allowed. Maximum operating temperature 160°C.
  • KIT is a mineral base, the parameters are calculated for operation at a temperature of 400°C. Short-term heating up to 600°C is allowed. It is used when operating with liquid fuel and gas boilers with closed and open combustion chamber.

Foundation requirements for Tona pipes

Tona tec and Tona tec iso systems are distinguished by their high weight due to the outer shell (blocks) made of porous concrete. Before installing the modifications, you will need to make a foundation for the installation of expanded clay concrete blocks.
