I was prompted to take up such "creativity" by the statement about the "hard" work of copyists of other people's homemade products. Let's call it "pen test".
To complicate my task, I completed it from a video plot.



I must say right away, may the author forgive me and let him himself look for his creation on the Internet. I present to your "court" MY "creation".

Each motorist, with the purchase of a car, acquires a jack for maintenance. Jacks are different, both purely mechanical and purely hydraulic. But all of them have a major drawback, which is ease of use. It is impossible to install a jack under the car without bending over in "tri-doom". There are more advanced ones for stationary use, but the cost of such "rolls over". That's about such a jack and will be discussed.
The author of the homemade product connected two types of jacks together. Here's how he did it.


Design features.
For his design, the author used a ready-made hydraulic jack, making a fixture for it. The whole structure consists of a thick-walled channel at 80. made from a whole billet. The bends of the structure were achieved by cutting the side walls and further welding. From the photo you can clearly see the device of the support rollers (wheels), I don’t see the point in dwelling on them. For direct support on the car body, a rubber support is fixed, it can be taken from the support pads of the springs, the engine ... having finalized to the desired size.

To install and fix the jack, a metal plate is welded (screwed) onto the lower channel, having the size of the jack base and a thickness of about 5 mm. The main focus will be on the channel.


To fix the jack, two 8-10mm holes were drilled in its base, and two guide pins were installed in the base of the welded platinum for the jack. That allows you to securely fix the jack and at the same time freely remove it.
A piston pin from the car was welded onto the main rod of the jack, cut off to fit the inner width of the channel. This finger rests on the movable part of the device and so that the jack cannot "slip", limiters are welded on both sides of the finger inside the channel in the form of two metal plates with a thickness of at least 8-10 mm. In this case, the finger should rotate easily there.


For rigidity of a design "kerchiefs" are welded. In order not to increase the weight of the device, they are not made of solid metal. A handle is also welded for ease of use.

Having rolled the device under the car, you, as usual, use the handle to start lifting the main rod of the jack and thereby set the lifting arm in motion.

Due to the enlarged lifting lever, it is possible to completely lift the entire side to be lifted. Both wheels are not supported.

How to make a screw jack

The classic and most common diamond-shaped jack is a screw jack. Make it like this do-it-yourself jack- a matter of two hours, especially if you have one and a half to two meters of channel and a basic set of fasteners. The compact tool will easily fit in the trunk, and in any emergency and unforeseen situation, you will praise yourself for your foresight and ingenuity.

Many people know how to assemble a jack from a channel, but have never tried it. Only five elements, and the tool is already 90% ready:

  • Levers from a steel bent channel with equal sides - 4 pcs;
  • Fragments of the channel for the lower and upper arms (the lower arm can be replaced with a wider and more stable base);
  • Rubber pad (on the upper shoulder, for the jack);
  • Axles holding the upper and lower arms (pins with heads on the axle, secured with cotter pins);
  • Threaded screw fixed to the shaft on one side.

On the preparatory stage drill holes at the junctions of the elements, and then begin assembly. Connect the shoulders, fasten them together and on the bases. Pass the threaded screw into the shaft and check the homemade jack for lifting force.

As you can see, a simple method that does not require welding and professional equipment(except for an electric drill), takes only an hour or two, and does not damage the budget.

How to make an air bag jack

It is a completely different matter when a jack is needed for more serious work than, for example, changing a wheel on the road:

  • Lifting vehicles weighing more than 2 tons;
  • Work in the inspection hole;
  • Professional activity in a car service;
  • Lifting the car in hard-to-reach spots.

In cases where classic screw models cannot cope, home-made hydraulic jacks from an air cushion come to the rescue: they are relevant not only for a car, but also for other heavy loads - safes, workbenches, large-sized furniture.

To assemble a homemade air jack, you need a minimum of materials:

  • Pneumatic cushion from a bus or truck;
  • Air hose + supply and bleed system;
  • Cushion stand + car pad;
  • Compressor (which, by the way, can also be made by hand).

How to make a rack jack

He always comes to the rescue when other models are powerless, and human imagination and physical capabilities have been exhausted. A rack jack will help if you need:

  • Raise the car by the hitch.

There are no secrets in how to make a rack model, it will take only three points and about an hour of time:

  • From the available rails, weld one, elongated (1.5 - 2 meters, depending on the needs);
  • Weld a stable base to them;
  • Put on top of the jacking mechanism with a heel, found in the bins of the garage (or bought by agreement with a neighbor).

If desired, fasteners can be additionally made to such a device, allowing you to lift the car by the wheel disks.

Simple manipulations and a little spatial imagination will allow you to save money and assemble a device with your own hands, without which not a single replacement of wheels and other parts of the suspension is complete. So, a bottle-type hydraulic jack.

It consists of a vertical body of large diameter and a small cylinder adjoining it, to the stem of which a removable lever fits. The body is mounted on a support platform, it often has a screw extension in the stem, which is necessary in order to increase the lifting height. The two cylinders are interconnected through a check valve.

The body has a reservoir for storing oil and a bypass valve to lower the stem of the hydraulic bottle jack.

All parts must be made of durable alloys, so they experience significant loads and are protected from corrosion.

The design of another variety - a rolling hydraulic jack, differs only in the location of the cylinders and the presence of a large platform on the rollers.

Lifting the car with the help of a hydraulic rolling device is carried out not by the rod itself, but by the lever connected to it. This lever has a metal pin.

The rolling structure is more stable than the bottle structure and the likelihood that the raised car will shift and fall off the support is much less.

Despite this, safety measures during work must always be observed. Be sure to fix the car with the parking brake, the included transmission gear and the installation of stops under the wheels.

The most common problem is a leak working fluid through seals and glands.

The leak must be pinpointed and repaired. It is necessary to use only special oil-resistant seals and gaskets. Valve failure may be due to clogged or broken springs.

It is necessary to disassemble, clean and replace defective parts.

But you need to store them only in their original state, so that the stem is completely hidden in the body, this will protect it from corrosion. In addition, the bottle type must be stored vertically so that the working fluid does not leak out. Once every few years, you need to change the working fluid. This is a simple procedure. There is a filling hole on the body, closed with a screw plug.

Through this hole, draining and filling with new oil is performed. After that, it is necessary, without load, to fully raise and lower the stem several times. This will release any air that may have entered the system.

This reliable device, allowing you to lift a load of several tens of tons.

It is not complicated. In terms of load capacity, hydraulics are far ahead of other types of designs. But, unfortunately, there are also disadvantages:

  • Big weight, really big, several times heavier than mechanical competitors.
  • Special storage conditions for the safety of the working fluid and the risk of corrosion of working elements. This is especially true of the bottle jack.
  • inability to use at low temperatures.

    The hydraulic fluid thickens at temperatures below -25 degrees, the elasticity of the seals is lost, and the risk of failure increases.

After analyzing the advantages and disadvantages various designs one can come to the following conclusion.

For use with a passenger car weighing up to two tons, a compact mechanical jack is sufficient for the necessary road repairs (wheel replacement). But for lifting a large and heavy machine, it is better to consider using hydraulics.

Any hydraulic jack works according to the principles of communicating vessels using liquid. Advantages and disadvantages of hydraulic jacks

Hydraulic jacks are one of the most unpretentious for all their power. An important feature hydraulics is an incompressible working material. Hydraulic jacks demonstrate a high level of efficiency - up to 80% and a significant load capacity - up to 200 tons with little effort due to the large gear ratio between the cross-sectional surfaces of the pump plunger and the cylinder.

But with hydraulic jacks, the initial lifting height is much higher than with mechanical models. Another difficulty is the inability to accurately control the height of the lowering. To maintain the jack in working order, it is necessary to constantly monitor the oil level, control the tightness of valves and seals. Such jacks can only be transported and stored in an upright position, otherwise the liquid may leak out of the tank.

The disadvantages of hydraulic jacks follow from the advantages. They are relatively slow - one pump cycle corresponds to a not too high lift height. Rolling jacks

The disadvantages of such a design follow from the name - a rolling jack needs a flat hard surface, concrete or asphalt, to work. Assembling a hydraulic press is not that difficult. You will need for this welding machine with the required number of welding electrodes, hacksaw, angled sanding machine with a disc for metal, thick-walled steel profile for the design of the press. The functions of the power unit that provides the desired operating pressure, performs a hydraulic jack.

The first node of the hydraulic press is the support platform for the jack. Since the resulting pressure will be proportionally applied to the base and upper working units, the strength of the base should be maximum. This can be achieved by making several stiffeners on the basis. To make the base, take a steel square or rectangular profile that has a size of 40 by 50 or 50 by 50 millimeters and cut 4 parts about 250-300 millimeters long using the above tools.

The next step in the manufacture of a homemade press from a jack is the production of an emphasis and racks. If there is a need to achieve a smaller free play of the hydraulic jack piston, it is possible to reduce the space between the moving stop and the upper beam of the structure with the additional installation of an intermediate square profile.

To do this, saw off a piece of a square profile, which has a length that is equal to the distance between the uprights, and attach it at an equal distance of welds. This will significantly reduce the working distance of the hydraulic press and reduce the time spent on certain types of work.

To further reduce the stroke of the working rod of the hydraulic jack, you can use additional replaceable inserts, which are made of a solid or hollow steel profile or replaceable anvils. To create them, you should saw off several parts of different thicknesses and additionally mark them for a quick and careful selection of the desired element.

Hydraulic jack repair

Hydraulic jacks periodically need maintenance, therefore, it is necessary to add liquid to the working cylinder, which flows out during operation through oil seals and various seals. In addition to oil leakage, jack malfunctions consist in jamming when lifting a load to a certain height, the inability to lower the jack after lifting, or the inability to lift even a light load.

Oil leak

To repair and test a hydraulic jack at home, you should buy the right equipment repair kit. Before repair, the machine must first be disassembled. An extension to the keys may be required to have significant force and more leverage. Be sure to prepare a container to drain the old oil and prepare a new working fluid.

Another cause of failure of the hydraulic jack can be considered dirt that has entered the working cavity. To remove it from there, it is necessary to unscrew the head of the housing, pour kerosene into its base and pump the jack with the locking needle unscrewed. At the end of the operation, kerosene should be removed and clean oil should be poured into the working cavity.

Air entry

First of all, unscrew the locking needle one and a half to two turns, then lift the plunger with your hand by the screw to the extreme upper point and release it so that it is again in the lower position. Repeat these steps twice or thrice. To prevent such a problem from occurring in the future, it is worth periodically checking the oil level in the hydraulic jack and, if it is lacking, add working fluid.
