Do-it-yourself soft roof: preparation and installation of a soft roof. Installation of a soft roof Soft roof how to do

Number of fans soft roof grows like a snowball. And this is not surprising - just remember the visual appeal and operational advantages of one of the most modern coatings. But there could be even more supporters of flexible roofing materials, if they knew that installation could be done without involving a team of roofers. Today we will try to fill this gap and share not only construction technology, but also the secrets of experienced craftsmen.

The structure of the soft roof

Before talking about the roof structure with soft roofing, I would like to briefly mention the features of this unique material. In fact, it is a modified roofing material. That's just the basis of flexible tiles (hereinafter we will call them shingles) is not a banal cardboard, but a stronger and more durable fiberglass or polyester fabric. Improvements have also been made to impregnation. waterproofing soft tiles provides a modified polymer-bitumen composition, thanks to which the critical temperature points have been shifted to higher values.

The multi-layer structure allows you to make a soft roof durable and completely waterproof.

Basalt or slate chips are applied on top of the flexible tiles - it not only determines the design of the coating, but also makes it more resistant to mechanical stress, ultraviolet radiation and other external factors. From below, the tiles are covered with an adhesive layer, which is covered with a protective film. In some cases, a fine mineral dressing is applied to the lower surface - then the adhesive part is a wide strip in the upper part of the shingles.

Roofing pie construction

The multi-layer structure makes flexible tiles not only strong, but also durable - some manufacturers give a guarantee for their products for up to 25 years. As a rule, soft roofing materials easily overcome this boundary. Of course, we are talking about those cases when the base of the soft roof complies with accepted standards, and the laying of the material is carried out strictly according to the prescribed technology.

Studying the device of roofs with bituminous tiles, we immediately divide them into two types:

 • cold,
 • warm.

The first are built for cold attics. Many websites and print publications sin by pointing out the inexpediency of arranging simplified roofing pies for residential buildings. Like, if the house is intended for year-round use, then its roof must be warm. This statement is fundamentally wrong - most private houses of the old housing stock were cold. Moreover, the cold roof has its advantages. And the biggest one is durability. In winter, frost is practically not formed on such a roof, which, as you know, is one of the worst enemies of shingles. In addition, the simplest roofing cake is well ventilated, which means that the wooden frame will always be dry. As for energy efficiency, for thermal insulation it will only be necessary to insulate attic floor. As you understand, its area in any case will be less than that of the roof.

When using a cold roof on a residential building, it is necessary to insulate the attic floor, the area of which is noticeably smaller than that of the roof structure

So, the structure of the roofing cake for cold roofs includes:

 • step (sparse) crate made of wooden beams or steel shaped pipes;
 • solid flooring (from plywood, OSB or skid boards);
 • insulating lining;
 • bitumen coating.

Roofers working as part of professional teams often recommend installing a superdiffusion membrane under the lining carpet, arguing that this is a higher security. wooden base from moisture. A rather controversial statement, which I personally can only call wastefulness. A conventional waterproof lining leaves little to no chance for the wood frame to get wet due to snow or rain. Such actions on the part of specialists can only be explained by the desire to earn a certain amount for an operation that requires minimal labor. As for the warm roof, in this case, the installation of moisture-resistant coatings is mandatory due to the use of thermal insulation.

A warm roofing cake allows you to use any attic space for year-round use

For attic insulation, fibrous materials are most often used, which, when wet, can lose most of their unique abilities - that's what they need to be protected. From below - from moist air, and from above - from leaks. In this case, the roofing cake should have the following structure:

 • rails for mounting cladding panels;
 • vapor barrier waterproof film;
 • thermal insulation layer;
 • waterproofing windproof vapor barrier membrane;
 • counter beam;
 • sparse crate;
 • solid flooring;
 • lining base;
 • flexible bituminous coating.

You may object that the slats installed from the attic side have nothing to do with the roofing pie, and you will be absolutely right. However, we nevertheless indicated them due to the fact that in our case they also act as fasteners for the lower layer of vapor barrier.

Tiled roofing technology

Roofing made of soft bituminous tiles is similar to tiled only visually. Not only the installation technology differs, but also the operational characteristics, service life, maintenance and repair procedures. And although the work on the construction of a shingle roof cannot be called too complicated, you will have to carefully follow the manufacturer's recommendations. It is best to divide the construction process into several stages:

 1. Procurement of materials and preparation of tools.
 2. Preparatory work.
 3. Laying of insulating materials.
 4. Arrangement of counter-lattices and battens.
 5. Solid foundation construction.
 6. Laying the top layers of the roof.
 7. Installation of additional elements and arrangement of passages.

By organizing your working hours in this way, you will not only minimize the number of possible errors, but you will also be able to make the most informed decisions about attracting outside help.

How to calculate how much and what materials will be needed

The first thing to do when starting mathematical calculations is to draw up a detailed drawing of the roof or create at least an elementary sketch indicating exact dimensions and characteristics of each slope. The calculation itself includes the determination of the geometric dimensions and the number of main parts of the structure:

 • additional elements;
 • valley carpet;
 • lining layer;
 • ventilated ridge or roof aerators;
 • timber for step battens and counter battens;
 • boardwalk;
 • soft cover.

I must say that the accuracy of the calculations carried out affects not only the cost of the roof, but also the timing of the work. For this reason, we will understand the features of the calculation of all components of the roof in as much detail as possible.

Additional molding

To finish and protect various parts of a soft roof, several types of extensions are used:

The presented additional moldings are produced in the form of strips of a standard length of 2 m. However, in order to determine the number of certain strips, the length of the area in need of protection should be divided by 1.9 or 1.85. This is due to the fact that aprons and planks are not mounted end-to-end, but with an overlap of 10–15 cm wide.

If the roof structure includes grooves and junctions with vertical surfaces, then their waterproofing is provided by a special valley carpet. Manufacturers produce it in the form of 1 × 10 m rolls, presenting a choice of several colors to match the tiled flooring.

When choosing a valley carpet by color, it is not at all necessary to get exactly the color - a slight desynchronization of tones will play a plus, making an ordinary roof extremely stylish and expressive

Calculating the total length of the carpet, you should make a margin of 20 cm for each valley - you will need it for the correct installation of the lower part of the joints.

The lining layer is arranged both over the entire area of each slope, and partially - it all depends on the steepness of the surface. If the roof slope is more than 1:3 (18 degrees), then only areas prone to leakage are protected with a roofing carpet:

 • internal corners of adjacent slopes;
 • ridge part;
 • ribs;
 • areas with fractures of slopes;
 • edges at pediments and cornices;
 • ventilation outlets.

When laying the insulating carpet, it is necessary to make an overlap of 10-15 cm. For this reason, its calculated quadrature should be 1.1 - 1.15 times the total area of the slopes. If the lining is partially equipped, then the length of the strips of the roofing carpet corresponds to the length of the parts of the roof prone to leakage.

The lining carpet can be laid both along and across the slope

The width of the lining with partial waterproofing should be 40-50 cm. An exception can be made only for skates and external corners, reducing this value to 25 cm.

Skate air elements

When calculating the number of ridge aerators, it is assumed that one element 1.2 m long is able to provide ventilation for about 25 m 2 of the under-roof space. If point air elements are used, then the total area of adjacent slopes should be divided by 5 - that is how many square meters of the roofing pie "serves" one such element.

The design of the ridge aerator allows you to organize ventilation of the roofing pie on roofs of any configuration

Note that point air elements vary in height. Steep roof slopes are equipped with short ones, and gentle surfaces are long.

Lumber for battens

For the arrangement of the crate is used wooden beam with a section of at least 40x40 mm, as well as a board 25 mm thick. The length of the counter beam is the easiest to determine - it is equal to the length of the rafter legs. As for the sparse lathing, the total length of the wooden elements is determined based on the standard step width for shingles - 37 cm for rafters located at a distance of 0.9 m from each other. Therefore, the length rafter leg in centimeters should be divided by 37 and multiplied by the width of the roof - this will be the desired length of the beam, which will be needed for the crate of one slope.

solid base

Sheets of plywood or OSB used for arranging a solid base should be mounted apart, that is, with overlapping seams. For this reason, when determining the area of the material, an amendment must be made:

When determining the amount of plywood or OSB in sheets, it is recommended to make a sketch of their location on paper with the most dense laying - this way you can avoid wasting material during installation.

Covering and roll materials

In the process of laying, two types of tile shingles are used - ridge-cornice and ordinary. The first are produced in the form of packages designed for 12 p.m. m of skate and 20 linear meters. m eaves. When calculating the latter, the same correction factors are used as for a solid base ( simple roofs 3–5%, combined - up to 10%). To determine the number of shingle sheets, the total quadrature of ordinary shingles is divided by the area of one bituminous strip. One pack of soft tiles is usually designed for 3.5 m 2 of roofing - knowing this number, it will not be difficult to calculate how many packs you will need to buy.

Before installation, tile shingles from different packs must be mixed - this will eliminate the appearance of non-uniform color sections of the roof

The amount of materials that will be needed for a warm roofing cake is calculated with the following tolerances:

 • waterproofing and vapor barrier - at least 4%;
 • roll thermal insulation - according to the area of the slope;
 • plate insulation - up to 4%.

It is easy to see that the amount of roll and slab insulation practically does not depend on the complexity of the roof. This is due to the fact that such materials are easily joined together and do not affect the appearance of the structure.

What tools and supplies will be needed

In addition to roofing and wood materials In the process of work, the following equipment and tools will be required:

 • saw;
 • hammer;
 • scissors for cutting metal dobor;
 • metal spatula for mastic;
 • roofer's knife (different from the usual hook-shaped cutting part).

In addition, you should purchase ordinary nails, which will be needed for the construction of a wooden base, and special ones for fixing a soft roof. The latter are distinguished by a wider cap (diameter 8–10 mm) and a length of 25–30 mm. Fasteners that are used in automatic pistols are also suitable - such hardware has a length of 40 mm. The number of nails is calculated based on the consumption of 4 pcs. per shingle or 500 grams per 10 m 2 of roofing.

For a one-time use, it is not necessary to buy a special tool - you can get by with replaceable hook-shaped blades for a regular construction knife

In the process of installing flexible tiles, you will need a bituminous mastic designed for waterproofing building structures. Its volume can be determined by the area of the roof - for every 10 m 2 of coverage, up to 1 liter will be required liquid mixture.

The price of bitumen mastic is affected by both the type of material (cold or hot applied) and composition. The cheapest is bitumen-polymer waterproofing, while the most expensive is recognized as bituminous polymer-aluminum coating. The latter is highly resistant to heat aging and UV radiation. In our conditions, bitumen-rubber mastic will be enough - it has an average cost and has good installation and operational characteristics.

Preparatory work

Preparatory stage includes several steps:

 • dismantling of the old roof (if necessary);
 • installation of a crate frame;
 • installation of heat-insulating and accompanying layers;
 • solid foundation construction.

The arrangement of a warm roofing pie is carried out in the following sequence:

Table: determination of the thickness of a solid base for a soft roof

Before, we have already talked about the need to lay slab material apart. In addition, thermal gaps of about 5 mm should be left, otherwise summer heat sections of the roof will be arched. On each side of the ridge, gaps of 70–80 mm are left to create effective ventilation for the roofing pie.

It should be noted that for a cold roof it is enough to build a sheathing and boardwalk - the need for other elements is eliminated due to the maximum simplification of the design.

Step-by-step instruction

The manufacturer provides for the laying of bituminous tiles at an outdoor temperature of up to -15 ° C. Since installation during the cold period requires additional heating equipment and the cost of heating materials, it is best to start work in the warm season, choosing days when the temperature rises above 20 ° C. In this case, the bituminous component will be warmed up due to solar heat, which will make it possible to obtain a strong connection of all layers of the roof.

Laying soft roofing can be carried out in winter period- the main thing is that the temperature does not fall below -15 degrees

In order to properly allocate time and effort, we suggest using step-by-step instructions for laying a soft roof on your own.

Forming the underlayment

As a substrate, rolled materials from fiberglass impregnated with a bitumen-polymer mixture are used. You should not refuse a soft base - a lining is needed in order to additionally level the surface, waterproofing, insulation and sound absorption.
Strips of rolled waterproofing can be laid parallel or perpendicular to the horizon line - the main thing is to ensure an overlap of 10 cm along the long side of the insulation and 15 cm at the joints.

From my experience I can say that on steep roof slopes it is best to lay the lining in a vertical direction. And not at all because in this case the likelihood of leaks during heavy rains is reduced. The fact is that under the influence of gravity, the waterproofing sheets sag, and folds form on the surface. In order to level them well and properly fix them, additional time and effort are required - one cannot do without assistants. As for gentle slopes, here, of course, the horizontal method of fixation wins, as it is simpler and more reliable. It is only important to start work from the overhang and move towards the ridge. At the same time, each subsequent strip of waterproofing will cover the edge of the previous one and the water will not have a single chance to get under the upper layers of the roofing pie.

Partial underlayment is only possible on roofs with steep slopes

When deciding to partially lay the underlay on steep slopes, the most important areas should be protected. So, on both sides of the valley and at the edge of the slope (cornice line) the width bituminous waterproofing should be at least 50 cm, while for skates a strip of this size is divided in half.
To fix the lining layer, use a nail fight or fastening with building brackets in increments of 25 cm. In areas prone to leakage (valleys, junctions, etc.), the litter should be glued with a bituminous composition.

The list of materials that are suitable for use as a bituminous base is indicated by the manufacturer in the installation instructions for shingles. It is irrational to replace them with improvised coatings such as roofing material or polyethylene film due to the short service life, rapid thermal aging and other factors.

Installation of valley carpets and additional strips

When choosing a bitumen-polymer carpet for arranging valleys, they are guided by the color of the main coating. For decorative purposes, you can choose a material that differs in tone - this will emphasize the line of each groove and make the roof more expressive. Experts recommend covering the valley with a solid panel 1 m wide, be sure to glue it with mastic to the plank base. If it is required to join two pieces, then the junction is located as close as possible to the peak of the roof. The overlap of the top sheet to the bottom must be at least 20 cm with mandatory fixation with liquid bituminous waterproofing.

The material of the valley carpet is laid over the entire surface of the groove and glued to the base with mastic

To protect the edge of the lathing from dripping condensate and sedimentary moisture, a cornice and gable extension should be installed over the insulating carpet. To fix the planks, roofing nails are used, which are hammered in a zigzag pattern at intervals of 10-15 cm (at the joints - up to 5 cm). It is necessary to withstand the overlap of adjacent additional elements of 3–5 cm, placing the edges of the planks along the contour of the eaves or end ledge. It is advisable to fasten the droppers first - in this case, at the corners of the slopes, they will be covered by gable strips.

The joints of the cornice and gable planks are overlapped with reinforced fixation with roofing nails

Before installing the cornice and end protection, it is recommended to frame the perimeter of the solid flooring with a rail with a section of 20x40 mm. If an edge is made along the edges of the slope, then the waterproofing is installed on top of it and cut off behind the perimeter line. After that, additional elements are attached.

Cornice tile installation

The horizontal lines of a marking put on a lining simplify installation and allow to lay a tile in equal rows. It is best to form them with the help of linen twine rubbed with chalk. The cord is pulled in the right place and released like a bowstring to leave a mark on the dark surface of the substrate.

For even laying of cornice tiles, it is necessary to apply chalk markings on the lining layer

Starting shingles are laid at a distance of 1 cm from the eaves line and fastened with roofing nails. So that the tiles do not come off under strong wind load, the fasteners are hammered at a distance of 25 mm from the edge. Each subsequent strip is laid end-to-end, and the junctions are protected with bituminous mastic.

Installation of ordinary tiles

The main coating is mounted in the direction from the center of the slope, placing the first ordinary shingle with an indent of 2–3 cm from the edge of the cornice strip. To fix soft tiles, it is enough to remove the protective film from the adhesive layer and firmly press the shingle to the substrate.

When laying the lower tiles of ordinary tiles, make a small indent from the edge of the cornice sheets

The final fastening is carried out with nails at four points - along the edges of the strip, as well as over the depressions between the inner petals. The top sheets are offset by 1 petal. Thanks to this, the very “tiled” texture appears, and in addition, the joints and fixation points of the soft roof are closed.

The scheme for laying a soft roof provided by the manufacturer makes it easy to understand the nuances of the technology

The tiles protruding beyond the edges of the slopes are cut off, after which the cut is treated with bituminous mastic.

Video: soft roof installation technology from the material manufacturer

Arrangement of the ridge and sealing of penetrations and junctions

Ventilation of the under-roof space is provided by air elements installed on top of the ridge. TO wooden frame they are fixed with screws or nails. After that, the ridge part is closed with flexible tiles. There are no special strips of soft bituminous coating for external corners - they can be made by cutting out the cornice tiles. The petals cut along the perforation are placed across the ridge and fixed with a nail from each edge. The next element is placed with a 5-centimeter overlap, and for additional sealing, the contact point is treated with bituminous mastic.

The ridge air element must be covered with a layer of bituminous tiles, otherwise atmospheric precipitation will quickly render it unusable

Places where pipes, cables and other communication elements pass through the roof slope must be closed with special passage units. They are attached directly to the base even before the installation of the lining carpet.

The junctions with walls and chimneys require special attention, otherwise the moisture flowing down the vertical surface will penetrate inside the roofing pie

During the installation process, the upper layers of the roof are let in over the penetration, impregnated with mastic and cut in place. In the same place where the slope is in contact with a brick chimney or wall, roofing materials are let into the surface of a vertical structure. For additional protection, a segment of the valley carpet and a figured metal apron (adjacency bar) are used.

bituminous roofing cost

Doing all the work yourself, you can save a lot of money, because the total cost of the roof will consist only of the cost of necessary materials. Depending on the manufacturer, the price per square meter of a soft roof of a budget and medium level varies between 800–1,500 rubles. If we talk about the premium segment, then certain types flexible tiles are sold at prices up to 4,000 rubles. Of course, in this case, no self-laying there can be no question - anyone who can fork out for such an expensive material will find money for a professional team. The services of the latter, by the way, are not cheap - from 600 rubles per square meter finished cover.

As you can see, it’s not difficult to build a soft roof with your own hands, which, however, does not preclude proper accuracy and following the technology developed by the manufacturer. If you do everything qualitatively, then the roof will please appearance and trouble-free operation for many years. Otherwise, it is better not to take up the work at all, otherwise the roof will constantly remind you of its existence with leaks and other unpleasant moments.

Soft roofing is considered to be airtight materials, which are based on bitumen-impregnated fiberglass sheets. To improve the mechanical characteristics, they are coated with a rubber compound. The use of inexpensive raw materials during their manufacture makes such materials relatively affordable. This article will discuss how to properly lay a soft roof, what equipment is required for this, and what needs to be done to make the installation process as simple as possible.

Stocking up on tools

Whole essential tool should be present in almost everyone:

In order not to injure your hands during the process of fixing a soft roof, it is better to use special rubberized construction gloves.

Preparatory stage

According to the technology of laying a soft roof, the following preparatory work is carried out first of all:

 • the base of the roof is cleaned of debris;
 • the entire area is checked for irregularities, after which alignment is carried out;
 • thoroughly dry the surface.

How well the preparation of the base will be carried out will greatly affect the quality of the subsequent installation of a soft roof, as well as the duration of its operation. The installation technology of a soft roof implies that its installation should be carried out only on a flat surface without flaws, which can be made from OSB boards or water-repellent plywood.

The procedure for installing a soft roof begins with unpacking the purchased rolls and checking them for color matching. This is done because quite often many material manufacturers sell the same products with different halftones, which, after laying on the roof, can differ significantly from each other. The weight of a sheet of bituminous soft tiles is approximately 1500 grams, which makes it possible to raise it to the desired height without the use of special equipment.

The most important thing is that during the construction of a soft roof, an angle of at least 11 degrees is observed. It is necessary so that too large mechanical loads do not occur due to the accumulation of precipitation.

Despite the fact that the material to be laid has high water-repellent properties, it is desirable to make additional waterproofing.

According to the technology, soft roofing should be accompanied by laying waterproofing parallel to the eaves, while not forgetting to overlap at least 20 cm vertically and at least 10 cm horizontally. Insulation will make it possible to reduce the thermal conductivity of the roof, as a result of which heat in the house can be stored as efficiently as possible. To protect the thermal insulation from condensate, moisture and steam, a special diffusion film is laid. At the same time, remember that diffusion films should lie parallel to the rafters so that the joints fall on the rafter legs.

The sequence of installation of a soft roof

The installation of a soft roof can conditionally be divided into three stages:

 • fixing the cornice row and the starting roofing sheet;
 • fixing all other rolls;
 • installation of the ridge and its adjunctions.

Before installing the roof, its entire base must be qualitatively waterproofed. A valley carpet of the same color as the roof itself is mounted along the entire ridge.

Installation of the starting sheet is carried out from the cornice row. The protective film is removed from the roofing sheets and glued with mastic, which is applied to a pre-prepared base. The thickness of the mastic layer is determined by the type of roofing. Sheets are laid above the inflection of the cornice by a few centimeters. The subsequent sheet is laid end-to-end, while they are fixed with nails in the holes made in advance for this. The same method is used to install the entire cornice row.

If the roof is steeply pitched, at least six nails must be used to secure the sheets. The technology of covering the roof with a soft roof implies its convenient and quick installation, as well as dismantling if necessary. The edge of the starting row of sheets is placed approximately 10 mm from the lower segment of the eaves, and all subsequent sheets are located in the same direction as the first row. All outgoing edges are trimmed and coated with mastic. At the end of the laying of the finish row, they proceed to the installation of sheets that are adjacent to the ridge.

Installation of roofing material located near the ridge is laid by dividing the sheets into three pieces. As a result, all parts must be glued separately, so that they are placed parallel to the ridge. Fixation of ridge sheets is carried out with the help of mastic and nails, while two sheets must be nailed at once.

Often during the installation process, bubbles appear under a soft roof. To avoid this, resort to partial fixation of the waterproofing carpet.

Mounting can be done using one of the following methods:

 • by spot and strip sizing;
 • nails;
 • installation of material on a perforated base.

These installation methods will distribute the air pressure above and below the roof, which will prevent the formation of bubbles. Such a roof is also called breathable.

The technology of laying a soft roof around the chimney pipes

The installation of a soft roof around the chimney and ventilation pipes is carried out according to a special technology. For this, a special pattern is made from the valley carpet.

It must be bent and cut, following a specific instruction:

 • first, they mount the front pattern, leading it over the soft roof;
 • then lay the left and right patterns, placing them under the roof;
 • at the very end, the rear side of the pattern is mounted;
 • bitumen or special mastic is used to seal the seams;
 • it is better if the entire roof is made in cascade for the best sealing and protection against moisture ingress.
 • Every year in spring and autumn, it is strongly recommended to monitor the condition of the roof, make sure that no visible damage appears on it - start to eliminate them in a timely manner.
 • To get rid of leaves, branches, snowfall and other debris that has accumulated on the roof, it is better to use a soft brush. In no case should shovels, shovels and other tools equipped with a sharp steel working part be used.
 • To organize the most effective drainage of water from the roof, carry out timely cleaning of gutters and gutters from debris.
 • In case of accumulation of a large amount of snow, it is worth removing it in layers so as not to deform the roof.
 • If you find any damage on the roof, find out the reasons for which they arose. First get rid of the cause of the deformation, and only then carry out repairs.
 • In no case should you walk on a soft roof if the outdoor air temperature exceeds 30 ℃, since with a high degree of probability you will damage the outdoor protective layer roofing.

Soft roof laying technology: installation of the roof covering, how to lay it correctly, fastening, order

Soft roof laying technology: installation of the roof covering, how to lay it correctly, fastening, order

The technology of laying a soft roof made of bituminous tiles: a step-by-step instruction

Soft roof - a term that combines a range of flexible roofing materials with excellent consumer qualities. Its piece and roll varieties flawlessly protect the house from atmospheric "misfortunes" and effectively decorate the exterior. They weigh little, do not require effort in cutting and fastening. Among the pluses, the ability to lay the coating with one's own hand appears solidly. For an ideal result, it is not necessary to have the skills of a roofer. You need skill, patience, a tool and information about how the technology of laying a soft roof differs from other methods and how to properly arrange a roof.

The specifics of a soft roof

Materials from the group of soft roofing are modified versions of the good old roofing material. New developments borrowed from their predecessor the flexibility and lightness that rightfully top the list of advantages. They retained unshakable water-repellent properties, thanks to which the wooden base and truss system last longer. The composition has improved, due to which the terms of the impeccable work of materials have increased threefold.

With a focus on the laying method, the class of soft roofing is divided into three types:

 • Roll materials, supplied in the format corresponding to the name. These include bituminous descendants of roofing material and new representatives, such as polymer membranes. Roll coverings are laid in strips. Bituminous materials are fastened by fusing, polymeric materials - by partial or complete gluing. With their help, they mainly equip flat and sloping roofs with slopes up to 3º, up to 9º is acceptable. Rolls are in demand mostly in industrial construction;
 • Roofing mastics supplied ready-made or cold to be heated. They are sprayed or applied in a thick layer on flat roofs, resulting in a monolithic coating without seams. Reinforcing mesh is used for reinforcement. The scope of application is limited to flat roofs.
 • bituminous tiles supplied in flexible shingles. In fact, this is an improved roofing material, cut into relatively small sheets. The edge of the shingles is decorated with figured petals to imitate a ceramic prototype. The back side is equipped with an adhesive strip designed to be attached to a wooden base. Glue piece by piece. Additionally, roofing nails or self-tapping screws are hammered into each shingle. From the heating of the bituminous roof by the sun's rays, the tiles are sintered and turned into a continuous roofing shell.

In private low-rise construction, a piece variety is actively in demand, because. flat and low pitched roofs over one- or two-story residential buildings are built extremely rarely. Household buildings have a “flat” fate, but not every owner decides to buy membranes and mastics for the roof of a barn. So, we will pay attention to the installation of the most popular shingles.

Step by step installation of shingles

Roofs with any steepness and degree of architectural complexity are covered with piece flexible material. True, bituminous tiles are not recommended for roofing if the angle of inclination of the slopes is less than 11.3º. The material is produced by numerous manufacturers. Each of them strives to impart unique qualities and properties useful to the stacker to their own products.

Despite some differences, the soft roofing technology is carried out according to the same scheme. There are small nuances, but they are not fundamental.

Foundation preparation rules

Flexibility is an advantage and a disadvantage of bituminous coating. On the one hand, it allows you to noticeably speed up the process. After all, it takes a little time and a minimum of effort to form junctions, sinking pipes, arranging valleys and cornices. On the other hand, due to the flexibility of the material, a continuous batten is required so that the flexible shingles rest completely on a solid, even base.

You can build a continuous crate before installing a soft roof:

 • from OSB-3 boards, recommended based on budget cost and sufficient strength;
 • from sheets of moisture-resistant plywood with the FSF marking;
 • from grooved or edged boards, the moisture content of which should not be less than 20%.

The sheet material is laid in a masonry-type run-out. It is important that there are no cruciform joints. It is necessary that the weak areas of the joining of the plates are evenly distributed over the counter-lattice. In the seams, gaps of 2-3 mm should be left, required for free movement truss system with temperature fluctuations.

Plank flooring is installed parallel to the roof overhangs. Also in a run, if the length of the board is not enough for the slope. The place of joining of two boards on the slope should be supported on the beam of the counter-lattice, four nails should be hammered into it. Ordinary boards are fixed with two nails on both sides. They must be laid so that there is a gap of 3-5 mm between the longitudinal elements. Edged boards are sorted before work. Those that are thicker should be distributed at the base of the ramp, those that are lighter should be sent up.

Ventilation is the key to perfect service

The excellent water-repellent properties of the bituminous coating are due to the scanty number of pores that can pass moisture and air. Reliable hydro-barrier acts in both directions. Raindrops do not penetrate inside the roof structure, but steam does not come out. If you do not provide a free path for evaporation, condensate will accumulate on the wooden roof trusses and the crate. Those. a fungus will start, because of which you will have to say goodbye to a solid roof.

In the name of long-term flawless service, it is necessary to arrange a roof ventilation system, including:

 • vents designed for air flow in the area of cornices. In addition to the inflow, they are required to ensure the free movement of air from the bottom up along the planes of the slopes. The vents are open channels formed by a crate and a counter-crate;
 • ventilation gap between the bituminous roof and the insulation laid on top of the vapor barrier. It is intended for washing with an air stream of a heater;
 • holes in the upper zone of the roofing cake. These can be either ends of the slopes that are not closed at the top, or specially arranged vents with a plastic barrel resembling a miniature chimney.

Ventilation must be arranged in such a way as to exclude the formation of air sacs in the under-roof space.

Laying an insulating carpet

It is highly recommended by all shingle manufacturers without exception to lay an additional waterproofing mat before installing the shingles. The list of materials suitable for carpet is usually indicated in the briefing. The product specified or equivalent in terms of characteristics is approved for use.

Replacement is highly undesirable, tk. a compound that is incompatible with the coating will prevent the bituminous layers from coalescing into a monolith and will promote swelling. Polyethylene is excluded. Ruberoid too, because the service life of a flexible roof is longer. It is unreasonable to lay a less durable material under a coating designed for 15-30 years of operation.

The technology of laying an insulating carpet under flexible tiles includes two options, depending on the steepness of the roof:

 • Installation of a solid carpet on pitched roofs with a slope angle from 11.3º / 12º to 18º. Roll waterproofing is laid in strips, starting from the overhang, moving towards the ridge. Each strip laid on top should overlap the previous strip with its own ten cm. If you need to join two segments in one row, they are laid with an overlap of 15 cm. The overlap is carefully, but without fanaticism, smeared with bituminous mastic. The insulation strips are fastened to the base with roofing nails every 20-25 cm. On top of the solid carpet, strips of barrier water-repellent protection are laid in the valleys and on the overhangs, as well as around the roof junctions. Then the ridge and convex corners of the roof are equipped with the original insulating material;
 • Laying partial insulation on pitched roofs with a slope of 18º or more. In this case, the valleys and overhangs are protected with bitumen-polymer material, and only the edges of the gables, the ridge and other convex corners are covered with insulating carpet strips. Insulation, as in the previous case, borders the intersections of the roof with pipes of communications and roof junctions. The width of the bitumen-polymer barrier along the overhangs is 50 cm, in valleys it is 1 m, so that each of the protected slopes has 50 cm. When laying around junctions and pipes, the insulating strip is partially led onto the walls so that 20-30 cm of the vertical surface overlap with the material.

The device of a flexible roof with partial waterproofing is allowed by manufacturers, but among them there are no ardent supporters of this method. Naturally, precipitation is less delayed on steep slopes, but the circumstances are different: ice, slanting rain, etc. Better to be safe.

The bitumen-polymer carpet for the valleys is selected to match the tiles. A slight deviation from the color of the coating is allowed if there is a desire to emphasize the lines of open grooves. It is desirable that the valleys are covered with a continuous strip of barrier insulation. But if the joining of two pieces cannot be avoided, it is better to arrange it in the upper part of the roof with an overlap of 15-20 cm. There is the least load. overlap in without fail smeared with bituminous mastic.

Protecting gables and eaves

The perimeter of the roof is equipped with metal strips. They are needed to protect the weakened sections of the crate from moisture and as roof design elements. The slats are laid on the edge of the gables and overhangs with an edge. The rib line must match the outline line of the roof. Fasten with roofing nails in a zigzag pattern after 10-15 cm.

If it becomes necessary to join two planks, they are laid with an overlap of 3-5 cm, at least 2 cm. The gable planks overlap the eaves at the corners of the roof. In places of end and docking overlaps, fasteners are driven in after 2-3 cm.

Most resilient roof manufacturers advise installing both types of metal protection over the underlayment. However, the developers of the Shinglas brand recommend that the cornice strips be placed under the carpet, and the gables on top of it. Before installing the pediment and cornice planks on the plank sheathing, they also advise first nailing the bar, and attaching a metal protection to it.

Formation of passages through the roof

Chimneys crossing the roof, communication risers, antennas, own ventilation openings need special arrangement. They create a potential hazard in the form of an open path for water leaks. Therefore, before installing the coating, the places of the roof penetration are covered with sealing devices or systems. Among them:

 • Rubber seals designed to close points of small diameter. Antenna holes, for example;
 • Polymeric passage elements used for equipping roof intersections with sewer and ventilation risers. They are produced specifically for the arrangement of roofs. Passers are fastened with corny nails to a continuous crate. Bituminous tiles are laid on top, which in fact are cut around the passage and fixed with bituminous mastic;
 • Plastic adapters for own roof ventilation. The holes are closed with vents, a ridge element with channels for evacuating fumes, and perforated fixtures for cornices.

The rules for arranging the passages of large chimneys should be considered separately. In addition to the threat of leaks, they are also a fire hazard. Chimneys are sealed in several stages:

 • the walls of the pipe are protected by parts cut from asbestos-cement slabs according to its actual dimensions;
 • along the perimeter of the pipe, a triangular bar treated with flame retardant is mounted. To make it, you can split a bar diagonally. A skirting board is suitable for replacement. The bar for arranging the chimney is not attached to the crate! It must be fixed on the walls of the pipe;
 • lay flexible tiles, winding the shingles on the bar;
 • details are cut out from the valley carpet according to the size of the pipe with the installed bar. The width of the parts is at least 50 cm. Patterns are fastened with a 30 cm lead to the pipe walls with glue or bituminous mastic. First, the front part is glued, then the side parts, and finally the back part. The lower edge is placed on top of the laid tiles, the upper edge is inserted into a stab on the pipe wall;
 • at the end, the multilayer insulation system is fixed by installing a metal apron with the treatment of the joints with silicone sealant.

There is a simpler and cheap way: the details of the insulating lining of the pipe are not cut out of the carpet, but immediately from galvanized metal. Then half of the stages of work will disappear by itself.

Wall junctions are sealed in a similar way. Only there is no need to install asbestos-cement protection, and the surfaces to be protected must be plastered and treated with a primer before arrangement.

Rules for laying cornice shingles

In order to create guidelines for the installer, it is better to pre-mark the roof with coated building cord. Horizontal lines are applied with a step equal to five rows of flexible tiles. Verticals are beaten off with a step of one shingle.

After preparing and marking the roofing surface, you can safely start laying flexible tiles, following the algorithm:

 • the cornice row of tiles is mounted on the overhang first. You can take a special ridge-cornice tile or cut out the starting element with your own hands by cutting the petals of an ordinary ordinary tile. It is necessary to retreat 0.8-1 cm from the edge of the metal cornice strip and glue the cornice shingle. For gluing from the adhesive layer, you need to remove the protective tape, and coat the remaining places with mastic;
 • the laid cornice tiles are fixed with roofing nails in increments equal to the width of the petal. The wide hat of the hardware when hammering should be strictly parallel to the surface of the continuous crate. Skews are not allowed. Nails are hammered, stepping back from the upper edge of the shingle 2-3 cm. Fixation points should overlap with the next row of roofing;
 • the first row of shingles is laid. It is better to start from the center of the slope, so that it is easier to align horizontally. 1-2 cm should be retreated from the bottom line of the starting row and glued in an already tested way. Nailed with four nails at a distance of 2-3 cm from the groove between the petals;
 • installation of the second row is also more convenient to start from the middle. But the shingle must be shifted so that the tab is above the groove of the first row of tiles and the attachment points are completely closed;
 • the upper corner of the tiles laid next to the pediment is cut off in the form of an equilateral triangle with sides of 1.5-2 cm. pruning is needed to break the water.

You can continue laying shingles in a linear fashion, i.e. stacking the entire row, one after the other. It is possible according to the pyramidal method with “building up” from the middle of the slope to the edges or diagonally.

Two ways of arranging a valley

Two methods have been developed for the formation of the valley:

 • Open groove device. Ordinary tiles are laid up to the axis of the valley on both adjacent slopes. Only nails stop hammering already at a distance of 30 cm from the axis. After laying with a coated cord, the valley lines are beaten off on the slopes, along which the coating is carefully trimmed. The width of the groove is from 5 to 15 cm. In order not to cause damage to the soft roof during cutting, a plank is placed under the tiles. The corners of the tiles located near the valley are cut to repel water, then the back side of the coating elements is coated with mastic and glued.
 • Closed groove device. Tiles are laid first on a slope with the smallest slope so that approximately 30 cm of material is located on an adjacent slope. At the top, the shingles are fastened with nails. After that, the second slope is covered, then a line is beaten off on it, stepping back from the axis of 3-5 cm, along which cutting is made. The corners of the tiles are cut to repel water, after which the cut loose elements are glued to the mastic.

The nuances of laying tiles on the ridge

Upon completion of the installation of tiles on the slopes, they begin to equip the ridge. ventilation ducts in the body of the crate should be left open, so a gap of 0.5-2 cm is left between the tops of the slopes. To ensure ventilation, the skate is equipped with a plastic aerator. It is not very attractive, therefore, for the sake of aesthetics, it is decorated with universal ridge-cornice tiles or tiles cut from shingles.

Nail the tiles with 4 nails. Each subsequent element must cover the fasteners of the previous one. Tiles are mounted on the ridges from the bottom up. The ridge is arranged in the direction of the prevailing winds so that the open areas turn to the leeward side.

Soft roof technology: step by step instruction for laying

The technology of laying a soft roof is distinguished by specific features and characteristic rules of the device, the observance of which will ensure the longevity of the roof.

Construction of houses

Private construction and the use of soft roofing is a topic that is quite relevant. This material has many advantages. Among them are light weight, absolute tightness, visual appeal, the possibility of using the most diverse roof shapes, a long useful life and the low cost of a soft roof. Moreover, the rain does not drum on such a roof, but quietly rustles. In addition to high operational and technical characteristics, the material allows you to install a soft roof on your own, without involving specialists.

The concept of soft roofing

The soft roof is modern material, the base of which are fiberglass sheets impregnated on both sides with rubber bitumen. Rubber bitumen is characterized by high tightness and moisture resistance, which is why soft roofing has spread so much during the construction of buildings. Also, the soft roof in its composition has a special dressing that increases wear resistance and prevents the roll coating from sticking together.

Soft roofing is considered an ideal covering for roofs in which the angle of inclination is at least 11 degrees. Therefore, when choosing a material for such strict requirements, be careful. Soft roofing is often called shingles, which is used as the top layer of a roofing pie and differs from other materials in its structure, which resembles rolled materials.

Styling tools

A flexible roof can be laid by 1 person. The only requirement that we have already mentioned is put forward to the roof surface - a slope of no more than 11º. But the maximum slope angle is not limited. Laying a soft roof with your own hands requires the following materials and tools: a hammer, a knife, mastic, sealant, a mastic trowel, roofing nails, cornice and end strips, a waterproofing carpet, a ridge-cornice strip and work gloves.

Ventilation device

The ventilation system is able to provide air circulation, which is necessary to prevent condensation on the bottom of the base. Neglecting this step when laying a soft roof on the roof will cause the rafter system to begin to rot, and in winter, ice and icicles will form.

The constituent elements of the roof ventilation system are ventilation ducts and outlets, gaps between the waterproofing and the base (at least 5 millimeters). Natural ventilation can be provided by ventilation openings that are distributed evenly under the eaves.

Lining layer

Cornice strips are made of metal and mounted on the overhangs of the cornices on the lining. They are required to protect the edges of the crate. Gable strips are also made of metal, they are fixed at the ends of the roof to protect the edge of the crate. The valley carpet provides additional protection of the roof from atmospheric precipitation. Choose it according to the color of the flexible tile.

In places where leaks are most likely, it is necessary to create a lining layer: on valleys, roof ends and eaves. A feature of the installation is the observance of the direction (from bottom to top) and overlap: in the longitudinal direction 150 millimeters, in the transverse direction - 100 millimeters. Places of overlap are usually coated with bituminous mastic.

Valleys and skates, respectively, are reinforced by 500 and 250 millimeters. At the same time, the valleys must be equipped with a lining layer on both sides, and along the ends and cornice overhangs it should be laid to a width of at least 400 millimeters.

The lining is nailed to the base with galvanized roofing nails every 200 millimeters. The lining carpet not only protects the roof from moisture, but also from destruction if the laying of the soft roof is suspended.

Preparatory work

The base to which you will attach the soft roof must be solid. It is in this that the process of constructing a roof made of soft tiles differs from roofs for which other materials are used. For example, a metal tile must be laid on a crate, in which a gap is allowed between the bars, which is explained by the high rigidity of the metal tile. A soft roof does not possess these qualities and therefore needs a preliminary installation of a solid foundation.

To equip the base, you can use oriented strand board, moisture-resistant plywood with a thickness of 9 millimeters or more, as well as grooved or edged boards. If you have chosen a board as a base, then it is recommended to preliminarily keep it in a pile until an equilibrium moisture level is reached.

Buy material in the winter and use it in the summer. The width of the boards is not more than 100 millimeters. It is desirable that the material has the same thickness and is sawn on band saw. The maximum wood moisture content is 20%.

A video about the technology of laying a soft roof shows that such materials need to be laid with a shift of the seams - apart, while leaving a gap of 1 centimeter between them. The surface must be dry, clean and smooth. The quality of installation and the service life of a soft roof will depend on these conditions.

The roofing cake must necessarily have the following layers: a waterproofing layer laid on the rafters; mineral wool insulation, if you are planning an attic device; waterproofing roofing mat, overlapped on the base with outside.

The subtleties of installing a soft roof

To cover the roof with a soft roof with your own hands, in addition to having free time, you also need good weather. It is customary to carry out work in warm, dry weather, while the air temperature should not fall below plus 5 Celsius. If, due to necessity, it is necessary to lay a soft roof in the winter at the wrong time, the tiles must be kept in the building at room temperature before starting work. You can also use a hot air burner.

The choice of such a temperature regime is explained by the peculiarities of the shingle - a sheet consisting of 3-4 "tiles". It can be attached to the surface with nails or using a self-adhesive layer, which is located on the inside. The tightness of the tiles is ensured by the heat of the sun, under its influence, the sheets are soldered to the base and to each other. This does not happen at sub-zero temperatures, and high-quality insulation is not obtained.

Soft roof tiles should be used simultaneously from 5-6 packages and selected in turn one element at a time to avoid sharp differences in shades in case it is necessary to repair the soft roof with elements from another package. It is in this property that another advantage of this material lies: a small difference in shades facilitates the process of replacing tiles and decorates its matte surface.

The choice of mastic

For laying the top layer of a soft roof, a bitumen-polymer material should be used, which allows you to make a continuous elastic coating that can withstand thermal and mechanical deformations of the base. According to the technology of laying a soft roof, it is recommended to use cold and hot mastics for attaching rolled material to the roof.

Cold mastics are traditionally used for the inner layers of the roof, and the hot substance is used as an outer coating. Cold mastics include roofing material and bitumen, and hot mastics include tar and roofing felt. The mastic used must contain bitumen and a dust-like mixture or filler made from fiber. Among dusty materials, lime, gypsum and ash stand out.

Production of bituminous mastic

You can buy bituminous mastic, but you can also make your own. To do this, take the bitumen, which is close to 80% of the mastic, and filler. Taking 2 servings of bitumen and diesel fuel for 1 serving of filler, you will get a cold mixture. Bitumen needs to be heated to 180 degrees while diesel fuel and filler are being prepared elsewhere. Both boilers can be mixed only after the water has evaporated in the bitumen.

To make hot mastic, you need to use a boiler. In it, the bitumen should be heated to 200 degrees, while it is necessary to slowly add the filler. It is important that during the procedure the temperature does not drop below 160 degrees.

To check the quality of the mastic, you need to lay it at an angle of 45 degrees, after heating the mastic to 60 degrees. The video on laying a soft roof shows: if the coating drains, then its quality is poor. If it does not drain, then you should let it dry. When drying, cracks will not appear in high-quality material.

Laying a soft roof

Before laying the roof directly, walk with a solution of bitumen and diesel fuel on a wood surface. Then slowly cover with mastic, then lay the glassine and roofing material. It is customary to start installation from the middle part of the cornice and move to the ends to the right and left. On the wrong side of the soft tile, before applying, you need to remove the film that protects the adhesive.

If you use cold mastic, then you need to wait 12 hours after applying the layer, only then you can apply a new layer. When covering with hot mastic, you can apply layers one by one. Each element of the roof must be nailed in the amount of 4-6 pieces.

When laying rolls according to the instructions for laying a soft roof, make a 7-10 cm overlap. In all cases, it is recommended to follow the overlay rule: position each top row so that the fastening joints of the previous one are closed. There is a displacement of the next new layer, depending on their number (with 2 layers - by half, and with 3 - by a third).

Cut off the excess along the edges of the roof and glue it with mastic. Due to the properties of modern soft roofing materials, the useful life of a roof covering is about 30 years. But this does not mean at all that you can forget about preventive measures.

Laying near ventilation pipes

Proper sealing of joints and careful fixing of material require space around antennas and pipes. The installation of a soft roof here is easy, provided that through elements are used. Without such components, the tightness of the coating is violated. Even before the shingles are laid, you need to outline the places where you will install ventilation and pipes.

Then you need to cut holes around which the edges of the lining carpet will be glued with mastic. Spread the upper surface of the carpet along the contours of the elements to be glued and nailed. Lay the tiles on top of the mastic.

It is recommended to treat the joints of the upper part of the passage element and bituminous tiles with a sealant. Having brought the work to the ridge line, you need to use special ridge elements of flexible tiles, which are bent over it, glued to the mastic and nailed.

Soft roof repair

Frequency repair work, which must be carried out with the roof of the house, depends directly on the base on which you installed the tiles, and on the cost of laying a soft roof. Wooden lumber, cement and concrete screed- they all react differently to a soft roof, which causes certain damage.

Cleaning up the damaged area

Immediately before starting the repair, determine whether such work is needed at all and to what extent. To do this, evaluate the degree of damage present. If holes have formed in the roll coating, it is recommended to fill them with mastic, observing the sequence of materials used for this.

Repair roll roofing should only be done in a clean area. And this is very problematic, because there is a special dressing on the roofing material. For this reason, it is necessary to thoroughly clean the area where the repair work will be carried out.

The crumb can be removed by using process oil. Anthracene oil is best for cleaning roofing felts, and solar oil is used for roofing material. Clean with an ordinary cloth or brush. With this treatment, you can remove the topping and soften the surface for further repairs.

Repair work

After preparing the damaged area, you can proceed to the main work. With small defects, you can use the usual mastic with a patch. But this solution is not suitable if all roofing layers are broken.

If several layers of the roof are damaged at the same time, it is recommended to clean the area from the old layer of mastic and dirt, and then dry it. After that, it is necessary to prepare a mastic mixture with the addition of sawdust or sand. This mixture should putty all existing damage so as to even out the edges. Mastic on all sides of the patch should come out at least 10 centimeters.

With the help of hard brushes and brushes, the mastic can be applied to the most inaccessible places. If you are working on small area, then it is advisable to use a simple spatula, which allows you to apply thick mastic and a mass with sawdust. If a “water bubble” occurs in the roof, repairs must be carried out in the same way as in the situation with a conventional hole. The main thing is to determine in time the source where the water comes from.

If cracks appear in the roofing material, it should be cut to the bottom layer. Then clean up excess mastic and debris, after which the area is dried and filled with new mastic. You can do without an incision if the cracks are small. They should be closed with a patch and mastic. If small cracks appear throughout the area of the soft roof, then it must be prepared and covered with heated mastic.

Powder recovery

After repairing the soft roof, it is necessary to renew the removed layer of dressing in place in order to avoid excessive heating of the material and melting of the mastic. To do this, smooth the surface and cover the roof with sand. Excess topping, which does not stick to the roof, will eventually be removed by itself. However, if you want, you can remove it yourself.

Now you have learned what advantages a soft roof has - tightness, long service life and a reasonable price for laying a soft roof. Follow our instructions carefully to install the shingles correctly. Use the recommendations on the choice of mastic and its preparation. And if minor problems arose during the operation of the roof, re-read the information about repairing a soft roof again.

In this article you will find instructions with step-by-step photos and video tips on how to make a soft roof with your own hands using the example of a roof.

Preparatory stage

Installation of a soft roof begins with the arrangement of a new or repair of an existing crate:

1. After installing the truss system, the inside of the roof is closed vapor barrier film, which is overlapped and fixed with bars.

2. Insulation plates are located between the rafters. Their thickness, density and number of layers are determined architectural features roofs and the climate of the region.

3. From the outside, the insulation is closed with a superdiffusion membrane. On top of this layer, bars of the counter-lattice are installed - they are attached along the rafters, create the necessary ventilation gap and form an additional frame for OSB or plywood.

4. Finishing stage - installation of the crate. Its type depends on the slope of the roof. At 9-20 degrees, it is necessary to mount a solid base under a soft roof made of moisture-resistant plywood FSF, OSB-3, DSP, boards. At 20 degrees and above, a sparse base is allowed from a board with a thickness of at least 25 cm or a bar with a thickness of at least 50 cm. The two extreme elements of the crate are mounted with a reduced gap of 30 cm, the rest - with a step of 32 cm.

5. In the case of a continuous crate, another layer of roofing cake appears - rolled bituminous waterproofing is laid over the entire surface.

Important! This manual gives the maximum allowable batten spacing. If possible, it is better to make a more frequent or continuous crate.

Do-it-yourself installation of a soft roof

Before starting installation, be sure to check whether the roof slopes are even. If there are deviations, it is necessary to draw a strictly vertical line - you will be guided by it when centering the sheets.

When carrying out work, do not stretch the sheets by more than 10 mm and follow the instructions with step-by-step photos exactly.

Stage 1

Laying must begin on the side of the roof opposite to the prevailing winds. Mark the overhang of the first row with a stretched rope. The optimal length is 3.5-5 cm. Secure the first strip by driving nails into the top of the wave strictly at an angle of 90 degrees.

Follow a certain order of hammering.

Use a special filler to protect the cornice gaps from birds, snow drifts and debris. If necessary, the holes are easily pressed through with an improvised tool of a suitable diameter.

Stage 2

Lay the second row, starting with half a sheet. At the corner joint there should be 3, not 4 overlaps - otherwise, deformation of the roof is possible. Drive in nails, fixing both sheets at the same time. Install the following blades in the sequence shown in the figure. Make sure the locks match. For marking sheets, you can use an ordinary colored pencil.

Important! Installation of Onduvilla is possible at temperatures from -5 to +30 degrees. In the cold season, the speed of work depends on the condition of the repair compositions. With strong cooling, the adhesive properties of the mounting tapes are lost, and the sealants become more viscous. Therefore, consumables should be stored in a heated room, and during installation - kept in pockets.

Features of the installation of roofing elements

Mounting forceps

Fasten the end beam with a size of 40 * 40 mm along the bottom of the slope crate. Install gable elements, placing them along the edge of the roof from the eaves to the ridge. The overlap should be 8 cm. The transverse lines serve as a good guide. Mounting options for components are clearly shown in the photo.

Mounting the skate

Decorate the ridge elements. To do this, install covering aprons with an overlap of 4 cm on both slopes. Fasten the skates over them, taking into account the angle of the roof slope. If you use Ondulin roofing elements, the gaps must be closed with Onduvilla filler. In the same way, the ribs of a multi-pitched roof are formed - in this case, the joints of the slopes are additionally sealed with a breathable tape.

Onduvilla ventilated skates are also used to protect the slope joints. First, lay a breathable insulation pad along the rib, then close it with a roofing element with an overlap of 8 cm. Install special end caps on the ends of the ribs.

Installation of valleys

For laying the valleys, an additional crate is required. Install 50 mm thick timbers on the inside corners of the roof. The distance between their center and the rafters should be no more than 21 cm. Mount a continuous boardwalk at least 70 cm wide along the slope line.

Lay underlayment waterproofing to protect against leaks. Here you can use Ondutis superdiffusion membranes. Make sure that the overlap of the canvases is at least 30 cm.

Fix the valley on the resulting base. Installation of roofing elements is carried out in the direction from the eaves. The starting gutter is installed with an offset of 5-7 cm, which allows you to set the valley flush with the cornice line. The subsequent parts are laid with an overlap of 15 cm and fixed in all corners with wide-head nails.

Connection design

To carry out the work, you will need an Onduvilla covering apron and a specialized tape with metal coated"Onduflash-Super". To begin, lay the apron around the chimney/along the wall and nail it into each wave of soft roofing.

Close the apron-to-wall/pipe joint with an appropriately sized strip of tape. Make sure that the sealing material extends at least 10-15 cm onto the vertical surface.

To fix the top edge of the tape, use metal profiles or wooden planks.

After finishing work, cover the bottom of the tape with an additional sheet of Onduvilla soft roofing.

Ventilation outlets

Use additional elements to ensure complete tightness of the connections and avoid future leaks. Onduvilla ventilation pipes perfectly match the "native" soft roof, and deflector caps reliably protect the channels from debris and precipitation. Installation is carried out as follows:

 • Cut an appropriately sized hole opposite 3 or 4 Onduvilla sheets. To do this, draw a line that coincides with the axis of the wave, and measure along it 13.5 cm from the top edge of the sheet. Set the leg of the compass at the end of the line and draw a circle with a diameter of 12 cm. Carefully cut it out with a jigsaw.
 • Mount the vent pipe. Make sure that the profile of its base coincides with the waves of the soft roof.
 • Lay the Onduvilla sheets over the base and secure ventilation pipe with custom nails.

Video installation of a soft roof

Take a few minutes to watch the video. The plot highlights the features of a soft roof and typical mistakes of novice builders.

Important nuances

Prior to installation, Onduvilla must be stored in a horizontal position. It is advisable to keep the original packaging. If it has been damaged, it is necessary to protect the opened pallets from moisture and dirt. The soft roof cannot be stored near heating devices, the minimum distance is 1 meter.

Creating a stylish and solid building or giving a noble image to the house - soft roofing does an excellent job with all these functions.

Apart from aesthetic appeal material distinguished by durability, reliability and wear resistance.

However, in order to fully experience all the benefits of a soft roof, it must be properly installed.

You can talk about the technical characteristics of a soft roof.

For preparatory and installation work with a soft roof will need the following tools:

 • hammer;
 • roulette;
 • hacksaw;
 • pencil;
 • chalk rope;
 • work gloves to protect hands;
 • trowel for working with bituminous mixture.

Lathing under a soft tile

Can serve as the main building material with a firm, even and smooth structure. These include moisture resistant plywood, edged or tongue-and-groove boards, OSB boards. At the same time, the permissible humidity level is up to 20%.

When installing, you should set the joints of the boards in relation to the supports so as to overlap from two runs or more. At the same time, the gaps between the boards should not be wider than 10 mm. The minimum thickness of the gap between the seams of the bottom skin is 2 mm, and when using edged boards5 mm. Gaps are needed not only for ventilation, but also for the possible expansion of the structure under the influence of temperature changes.

Crate preparation

Ventilation system for soft tiles

Care must be taken to ensure air exchange and prevent condensation about ventilation system . It will significantly increase the service life of the structure and protect it from decay, the formation of icicles and ice in the winter season.

For the organization of natural ventilation of the attic, it is recommended make holes for ventilation evenly along the entire length of the ridge under the overhang of the eaves, and the hood - in the upper part of the roof.

The ventilation system includes outlets, air vents located in the overhangs of the cornices and a special gap. The latter is the gap between the waterproofing layer and the base. The gap should be 5 cm or more.

Selection and installation of an insulating mat

For secure adhesion to the substrate before laying the tiles an insulating carpet spreads - fastened from top to bottom at the ends, cornice overhangs and valleys.

Self-tapping screws for soft roofing are used as fasteners, namely roofing nails, located in 200 mm increments.

When choosing an insulating carpet, you should start from the corner of the roof. With a roofing angle of 18 0 or more, you can stop on the lining in places with a high probability of leaks: ridges and valleys, in places of chimneys or areas adjacent to a vertical wall, which are reinforced by 250 and 500 mm, respectively.

At the same time, for the first, the width is 400 mm, and for the second, layer equipment is required on both sides.

at 12-18 0 requires laying an insulating mat over the entire area. It is mounted from the bottom up in a parallel direction from the cornice overhang. In the transverse direction, the overlap must be at least 100 mm, and in the longitudinal direction - 150 mm and above.

NOTE!

In order to achieve a good tightness of the structure, it is possible to treat the overlap with bituminous mastic.

valley carpet

To protect the roofing system from climatic precipitation, an insulating layer is applied to the valley, matching the color of the tiles and nailed.

roofing cake

To protect the house from precipitation, wind, temperature changes and other influences, a roofing pie is equipped - multi-layered construction various materials . For soft tiles, it looks like this:

 1. vapor barrier. Protects against the formation of condensate and minimizes the penetration of evaporation from the premises in the house.
 2. thermal insulation. Keeps heat, provides sound insulation, protects from wind, low temperatures.
 3. Waterproofing. Seals the inside of the building, preventing the ingress of water and moisture formed from rain or snow.
 4. decorative layer. Provides a certain look to the roofing cake and serves as an additional protection from the wind.

Soft roof device: technology and scheme

Protecting gables and eaves

To protect the edges of the lathing from rain moisture and snow, metal strips are used - droppers (cornice) and gable. Cornice strips are placed on the lining, located on the overhangs, and gable - on the lining layer in the roof ends.

Both varieties are fastened with nails in 100 mm increments and in zigzag arrangements.. In places where the planks are joined, an overlap of 20 mm or more is made. You can read about the installation at the link.

Upon completion of this stage, you can proceed to the main work - laying a soft roof.

Installation of a soft roof

Before starting the installation of a soft roof with your own hands, you should check the colors of all sheets in the packages, as there may be inconsistencies in the tiles. To avoid color deviations, you can mix 5-6 packs. The tile itself is suitable for roofs with a slope of 12-90 0 .

Greater attention is required to the temperature and climatic conditions at the facility. At temperatures below 5 0 installation of soft tiles is not recommended., since the roof sheets require the sun to seal with the base. If the installation does not tolerate waiting, and the temperature does not meet the requirements, it is recommended to keep the sheets to room temperature and use a hot air heater.

Flexible tiles: installation instructions

If both of the above conditions are met, the crate and tools are prepared, you can start laying. So, how to lay a soft roof? The technology for installing a soft roof is quite simple:

 1. Working with cornice tiles. Mounted on top of the slats on the cornice overhang. For fixing, glue and nails are used, located at a distance of 25 mm from the edge of the coating.. Another installation option is to use a pattern made from ordinary tiles. To do this, cut the petals from the shingle and mount the tiles end-to-end in an indent of 20 mm from the cornice overhang. To calculate the tiles, use ours.
 2. Working with ordinary tiles. Before installation, horizontal markings are carried out using chalk. This will allow you to lay a number of sheets evenly, especially if the slope has dormer windows, pipes and other elements in the structure. Next, the protective film is removed from the shingles and laying begins from the middle of the cornice overhang, heading in both directions. The roof is fastened with four nails driven into special holes. For slopes of 45 0 and above, you will need six nails.
 3. The first row of tiles is placed at a distance of 10-15 mm from the lower edge of the cornice tiles, and the petals are placed at its joints. The following rows should be placed in such a way that the end of the shingle petals is at or slightly above the cutouts in the previous layer. Working at the ends, it is necessary to cut the tiles along the edge of the roof and reinforce it with glue with a layer of 10 cm. In order not to damage the insulating layer when cutting plywood, you can put a piece of plywood or board under it.

The nuances of laying soft tiles on valleys and ridges

Important attention when laying soft tiles is necessary give valleys and skates to which you should proceed upon completion of work with ordinary tiles.

In valleys, the roof is cut to open a strip of carpet, having a width of 150 mm.

Before laying soft tiles on skates, scaffolding should be prepared to help simplify the work. To obtain a ridge tile, it is enough to divide the eaves in three places of perforation, and then bend the resulting elements in half.

Such a roof is fastened with a short side along the ridge with an overlap of 50 mm using four nails.

CAREFULLY!

Don't forget about applying glue to the petals in places of fastening after dismantling of scaffolds.

Now consider how to lay a soft roof around the chimney.

Soft tile roofing: chimney bypass technology

One more important point during installation - the organization of the junction of the roof to the chimney. It must be insulated by nailing a rail around the perimeter of the pipes and attaching an insulating carpet to it.

After that, the roof is brought to a vertical surface and glued, closing the slopes by 200 mm, and the pipe by 300 mm. The protruding edges are closed with a metal strip and sealed.

Common styling mistakes

Problem causing leakage or damage Description
Poor fixing of the flooring If the deck flexes or deforms, the fasteners can bend and damage the tile plates, causing leaks.
Ignoring the vapor barrier This leads to the ingress of moisture into the insulation and the destruction of the roof structure.
Incorrect laying of a soft roof in the first row If there is a coincidence between the joints of the plates in the starting and first rows, then this will inevitably cause leakage in the area of the lower part of the ramp
Poor fixation of plates With weak fastening of the plates, a gust of wind will easily lift and tear off the plate. To avoid this, it is necessary to correctly position the nails: they must be mounted through the fastener strip above the adhesive line covered by the petals
Roof package bend If, during installation, a package with plates is not placed on a flat surface, it will deform, and the roof layers will separate. Packages must be placed on a flat surface.
The adhesive strip on the plates goes continuously In such structures, water does not get out, falling under the plate from the side, from which it moves to the side to the joints between the roof. Usually these are places near chimneys, valleys or internal drains.
Ill-conceived roof design If the roof is not designed correctly, the following problems may occur: incorrect location of valleys or gutters, dormer windows, chimneys. It is difficult to solve this problem, since it appears even during construction. But leaks need to be found.
Poor chimney waterproofing Before proceeding with the correction of this problem, it is recommended to check the masonry for the presence of fallen bricks. A common mistake that causes leakage: the lack of flanging aprons when laying
Poor quality valley coating Most of the films offered on the market have a service life of 5-7 years, which clearly does not coincide with a roof that can stand for 50 years. Therefore, according to the installation rules, it is necessary to use a high-quality waterproof film in combination with a metal apron.

Following the technology of laying a soft roof and having the necessary set of tools, the installation of a roof made of soft tiles will be carried out efficiently, quickly and safely. However, if there are doubts about their own qualifications or lack of time, it is better for owners to entrust the work to professionals who are familiar with the procedure for laying the roof. And finally, we recommend reading the article about

The installation technology of a soft roof is relatively simple, so it is easy to do it yourself. Soft roofing is an excellent replacement for traditional materials. It has many advantages: flexible, lightweight, easy to install, inexpensive. To lay a soft roof, you will need to understand some of the intricacies of installing this type of material.

Soft roofing has replaced traditional coatings: slate, galvanized steel, tiles. Several people were required to lay such materials. It also took a lot of time to work. In modern hardware stores there is a large assortment of goods, among which a soft roof also occupies a worthy place. It is presented as piece material, and rolled.

Features of a soft roof

Sometimes soft roofing is called shingles. This is due to its composition - it is made on the basis of bitumen. You should not immediately disparage such material - it has little in common with roofing material. Soft tile is a stronger and more durable material than traditional rolled roofing.

Thanks to the use in the production of bituminous roofing modern technologies new material got a lot of positive features. It is not destroyed by high temperatures, differs in greater durability on a frost.

The Technonikol company is engaged in the production of Shinglas shingles, which can serve from 10 to 55 years. Modern bitumen-based roofing does not tear, does not lose its physical properties with increasing and decreasing temperatures. Due to the addition of various modifiers to the material, the bending strength of the material was increased.

Other features:

 • Bitumen during the production of tiles is melted by oxygen - due to this, the melting point has reached 110 degrees.
 • Fiberglass is used to reinforce the tiles, which increases the strength of the products.
 • The top protective layer contains stone dressing, which performs both protective and decorative functions.

As you can see, modern soft tiles are quite durable and reliable roofing. It is easy to install and requires little maintenance during use. To properly lay a soft roof, it is worth understanding the main stages of work.

Dimensions and Specifications

Soft tile is a piece material, which has a length of 1 meter and a width of 33 cm. Thanks to these dimensions, installation can be done alone. Each canvas is divided into 4 parts, having the shape of geometric shapes. By its appearance, bituminous tiles resemble classical ones.

Before laying such a roof, it is necessary to prepare the base. The crate is continuous. It is often made from plywood sheets. To minimize the negative effects on the tiles, a so-called carpet is placed under it, which serves as additional waterproofing.

Warming

Installation of a layer of insulation is carried out from the outside. The first sheets are laid between the rafters. Before laying them, you will need to make a rough sheathing from the side of the attic. The most optimal thickness of the insulation layer is 20 cm (2 sheets). Then the counter beam is installed and then the second layer of insulation.

The waterproofing must be laid parallel to the eaves with an overlap of 15 cm. In addition, about 15 cm should extend beyond the insulation contour waterproofing membrane. Fasten it with a construction stapler. At the joints, it is connected with a self-adhesive tape.

Lining

After the base is prepared, work begins with the substrate. Such rolled material has become an indispensable part of the roofing pie. It greatly facilitates the installation of a soft roof.

Work features:

 • The substrate is attached to the crate with roofing nails. At the joints, it must be glued with TechnoNIKOL mastic.
 • If the roof has a slope of less than 18 degrees, it must be completely covered with underlayment. If the slope is from 18 to 90 degrees, the roof is partially covered.
 • If the substrate does not fit over the entire roof area, cover the eaves, ridge and valley.
 • With a continuous carpet device, the rolls should be rolled horizontally. You need to start from the bottom. The horizontal overlap must be at least 15 cm.
 • The joint must be glued with mastic.

The lining will protect not only the roof from damage, but also the insulation and other elements of the roofing pie from getting wet. Care must be taken when installing carpet.

Tiling

After completing the lining, you can begin the installation of a soft roof with your own hands. A shingle is a small piece of roofing. It has self-adhesive areas that are protected by a special film - it is removed before laying.

Laying begins with a cornice and a ridge. For their entire length, universal ridge-cornice tiles are laid. The edges of each element are glued with mastic, and also attached to the crate using roofing nails. The latter should be located at a distance of 15-20 cm from each other.

After that, with a coated cord, you need to beat off the guide lines in order to get guidelines. Shingles should be laid on them. So that the roof slopes do not differ from each other in color, it is worth opening each package before work and choosing one element from each in turn. In this case, the difference will not be noticeable.

Installation of a soft roof begins with laying the first row - it is mounted from the middle, gradually moving in both directions. Each of them must be glued with mastic.

Wide-headed roofing nails are used to fasten shingles. For different types shingles provided their own nails. For this reason, it is necessary to read the instructions for the selected roof. When approaching the ridge, it is worth leaving a hole for the aerator.

When laying tiles at the edges, it is necessary to adjust the size of the shingles. To do this is quite simple. The elements are very easy to cut with a knife. Cut in the same way roofing material and when bypassing dormer windows, ventilation outlets. To make cutting shingles convenient, it is better to put a sheet of plywood under the material.

For the installation of the Katepal soft roof, the same laying technology is used as for the Shinglas shingles. The installation process is shown in the video:

The final stage

At this stage, aerators and a ridge are installed. Aerators are used for ventilation devices. The air flow is directed from the eaves upwards. For this reason, aerators must be installed as high as possible.

They are attached in the same way as the tiles. They are mounted with nails. After installation, they are covered with ridge tiles. To make it more convenient on a steep roof, special scaffolding should be installed. They are not capable of damaging the roofing, but they are securely fixed and help builders move around. Elements that are adjacent to the edges of the roof must be well glued with mastic.

Roll roofing

The rolled material called euroroofing material is also popular. It is placed mainly on flat roofs. Installation is quite simple. The main thing is to follow the instructions:

 • After the roll is rolled out, the material must be stretched, all folds must be aligned.
 • One side of the roofing material must be heated with a burner - until the special indicator melts.
 • As a result, the side is easily glued to the base. After the material has cooled, the roll is rolled up to the place of fixation.
 • Fusion is carried out with gradual rolling of the roll.

The roofing material overlap should be 5-10 cm so as not to be mistaken, a special indicative strip is applied along the entire length of the roll. The material must not be overheated - otherwise it will be unusable. High-quality euroroofing material should be homogeneous, not have voids.

Particular attention should be paid to the adjoining roofing material to the ventilation outlets and parameters. All problem areas should be treated with mastic. This will protect the roof from snow and rainwater. With a steep slope of the roof, it is worth equipping snow retainers, as well as properly installing droppers and a drain, which will prevent roof icing.

When performing a ruberoid roof, it should be understood that the installation technology differs from the laying of bituminous tiles. However, in both cases, it should be ensured that the roof is cleared of debris, sand, stones. Otherwise, the roof ahead of schedule will lose its functions.

The joints should be treated with mastic. After drying, it will have the same properties as a soft roof. When these rules are followed, even a non-specialist can carry out the installation of euroroofing material.

Results

As you can see, you can install the roof of soft tiles yourself. To complete all the stages of work, you do not need to purchase expensive equipment for installation. You will need a standard builder's inventory. Even when installing aerators, there are no difficulties.

If you follow the above rules, and be careful, anyone who knows how to handle a tape measure and a hammer will be able to achieve what they want when installing a soft roof.

It is better to do the laying of shingles on a hot sunny day. This will allow the shingles to quickly fuse and form a single surface. In order for the soft roof to function longer, it is worth taking care of the lining carpet, steam and waterproofing.
